Learning Guitar: Need a proper foundation to start from?

Mr. E

Everyone says different things, it's hard to know where to properly start from.

When you're serious on starting to learn guitar, where do you start from?

Answer
Lessons from a good teacher are really the best way to learn to play any instrument properly. I've been playing guitar since I was 7 (started lessons then) and have taught lessons for about 30 years. I use a standard method (Mel Bay) where you basically learn the fundamentals in a logical order.
- learn how to properly hold and tune the guitar
- learn the notes on all 6 strings
- learn to read music (standard notation - not tabs yet)
- learn to play notes in multiple positions on the neck
- learn major and minor scales in all 5 positions/patterns
- learn basic chord theory and how the notes in the scale go together to make chords

You will come across plenty of "guitar experts" on here who will tell you to just go find chord charts of your favorite song or learn to read tabs of your favorite songs. Those are fine approaches if you just want to know where to put your fingers on the neck to play a particular song, but if you actually want to learn to play the guitar and build a proper foundation (as you said), that is not the best approach.

EDIT: If you're looking for a great beginner acoustic guitar check out a Yamaha FG700S for $199. It's a great solid top acoustic and is nice and easy to play. When you change strings, stick with light gauge strings and your fingers will get used to playing in a few weeks. Don't overdo it at first, just play for 15 minutes or so at a time until you've built up your fingers.

It needs to be cheap because I am only 15 and I don't have a job...yet, but at the same time I want it to sound good. Thank you very much!

What is the best and fastest way to learn guitar?

I am getting a guitar for Christmas this year and I am really excited. I am 20 and have always been interested in playing but could never afford the instrument.

I know for sure my parents are getting me an acoustic guitar this year. I was wondering if anyone knows how long it will take me to learn how to play the guitar? Will I be able to learn it on my own or will i definitely need lessons?

Answer
In my case, it worked out that YEARS ago my guitar instructor would ask me to bring in recordings of songs for which there was an interest on my part to learn to play. This happened on cassette - before CDs EVER appeared on the market. It was just a matter of watching him learn the bass lines to the songs, and then figuring out the chords from the base lines and the fingering from the chords.

After a while of watching HIM do it over-and-over again for a year or so, it dawned on me that it was easier for me to learn the songs on my own! My parents would pay the the guy ten or 15 dollars for a half-hour lesson. Just keep your wrist as low as possible, and you will be fine!

My suggestion would be to take the lessons for a month, see if you are getting better at playing the thing as the month progesses. Then set a goal for three months. Then set another goal of six months. Learning on an accoustic is MUCH more difficult than learning on an electric, but it is the better option because you will ALWAYS be able to play the electric if you LEARN on the acoustic. Learning on the acoustic keeps you honest! *grin*

Oh! The LAST song my fingers learned to play on the guitar was this song by Everlast - the name eludes me, but it was sort of a bluzy song. It worked off a D-minor, Dsus4, Fmaj7, and C. The rest of the chord progression eludes me now, but if you were to put a guitar in my hands, my fingers would remember the song in an instant.

Oh! Someone else mentioned tuning! Want to know an EASY way to tune your axe? Use the FIRST note to AC/DC's Highway to Hell! That is the TRUEST A-note in rock-n-roll!

Tune your fifth string to THAT note, my tiny brain can still hear the note even though it has been years since my ears have heard the song. If you learn to do this, you will be able to play ANY guitar you find because that note will resonate in your head to the point where you can use its resonance to tune ANY guitar.

BTW, you tune the balance of the strings off the A-string.

My plan THIS week is to learn Mark Antoine's Madrid which is a GREAT guitar song. It sounds like it has TWO guitars in it - maybe three. My plan will be to start working on it Monday morning. It is such a sweet song - an instrumental too.

Actually, since you provided us with TWO solutions, your question should read, "Which is the better and faster way to learn guitar: with an instructor or on my own?"

The answer to the question really boils down to how much time you are going to invest in learning to play the beast. You going to give up once your knuckles and fingertips are screaming at you to stop, or are you going to ignore their pleas and just keep playing? After about month-six, you can start practicing your Townsend-like windmills, if you want. Start slowly, or your right hand will be screaming in pain too as the strings open up some skin as you start whaling on the axe! Walk before you run, always, Grasshopper.

What is the best Acoustic Guitar for beginners?

Carlenne C

I'm looking to start learning the guitar and id like to know what's the best Acoustic Guitar for a beginner with a relatively reasonable price.

Answer
Yamaha, Epiphone, and Takamine (Jasmine) make reliable beginner guitars ($150-300 range). If you have about $200 available, the best bang for the buck would be the Yamaha FG-700S on account of its solid spruce top (most guitars at that price are all-laminated construction).

Can I trade my lower quality electric guitar for an acoustic?

Emma

I have a Silvertone guitar beginner/starter package that I got a few years back, and I wanted to trade it in or sell it for an acoustic guitar. It's used, and I'm not looking for top quality, but I was just wondering whether I can get anything out of the Silvertone. I really would prefer an acoustic. Where should I start if I want an even trade?

Answer
I know you prefer the acoustic but sometimes an electric lying around wouldn't be a bad thing. Especially since most major guitar stores won't give you much for you starter package anyway. I would say keep the electric and invest a little time playing at a guitar center or local guitar store in the acoustic room. If you want high quality guitar with value in mind go with a takamine or ibanez. My first acoustic was a PF5 Cent from Ibanez. High quality acoustic guitar with pickup when I needed to be heard by a bigger crowd. The resounence on the body is beautiful and the guitar has bite in the midrange tones and pure high tones. Bass response is deep and fulfilling. Perfect for Jazz, Blues, and Rock. The Ibanez has the guts to go between music styles with excellency.

Really, there are so many nuances that go into the way a guitar sounds and how satisfied you will be with that sound. Honestly if you play with 3-4 guitars in your price range you will know which one you prefer right after you put the last guitar down. Infact there will be a guitar that you will play that you just wont want to stop playing because of how good it sounds to you. That is the guitar you should purchase.

If you want to get a good trade for your electric for money. Sell your starting package to a friend you know well for half of the price you paid for it. If your friend accepts then you will have a better deal then you would if you took it to a guitar store. Then take the money and use it towards an acoustic.

Good Luck and Happy New Years.

Is an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top a good guitar for beginners?

Tim

Right now I have a Johnson starters kit, and I have been playing for a year and a half. I have been looking at the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top (Heritage Cherry Burst) for a while now, and I went into Guitar Center and played one and loved it. I loved the sound and the finish on it. I'm just wondering if it is a good guitar for beginners.

Answer
yes its a good guitar. i also have one bought about a year ago it sounds great is just like the gibson one. although it's quite heavy so i wouldn't recommend it if you're small or can't carry heavy stuff but otherwise it's a good guitar and i don't regret buying it.

What is a good electric guitar/amp/pedal for hardcore/metal music?

Dakota1993

I have experience on an acoustic but have never really dabbled in electric guitars so im lost. I need to know a good guitar, amp, and whatever pedals I will need for hardcore or metal music. Im looking for a good bit of distortion but that the same time something clear. My price range isnt anything great. I got about $1500 to spend. Thanks!

Answer
Guitar: Ideally I'd suggest going for a First Act, as so many absolute guitar heroes from the genres you've mentioned have First Act signature models, but I think all there models are out of your price range. I would suggest an Epiphone SG G-400 http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Epiphone/G-400.aspx: a really great model for very cheap, with a classic gibson tone while also having an "alternative" sound to the les paul. Ibanez also have really good, really versatile models that are excellent for any style of metal, hardcore, technical or punk. I don't have much experience with Ibanez so you would be better trying these out for yourself. I have had great experience playing these styles on Washburn Idols as well http://www.washburn.com/electrics/original-idol-series/
For pedals, all you will need at first is a good distortion. I would suggest anything made by Boss. However, if you really want to develop your own sound, I'd suggest trying some Electro Harmonix pedals because they have a very unique tone, but aren't as widely used as Boss.
Finally, although I've given you a lot of options for guitars and pedals, the only amp I would truely recommend is Blackstar http://www.blackstaramps.co.uk/ they have an absolutely delicious tone, you really have to try these for yourself! Definitely the unsung heroes of the amp world.

I hope this has helped! I'm looking forward to seeing the other answers in this question, as these are also my two favourite genres to play on guitar.

What is a cheap, but good acoustic guitar?

J

I currently have a nice electric guitar, and I've been playing for about a year, but I'm looking into buying an acoustic. I'm not doing great on funds, so I'm trying to find a cheap, yet reliable guitar. Any recommendations? I don't mind the brand, as long as it doesn't cost too much, and sounds good.

Answer
I agree with the previous answer: "cheap" and "good" are mutually exclusive when talking about guitars. You'll find that most "cheap" guitars are "reliable" though, just not very good in the first place!

You'll be able to find plenty reasonably-priced/inexpensive guitars that are okay though. I have no experience of Eastman guitars but have heard good things about them. Googled "Eastman guitars" and found an acoustic at over £400 (I'm in The UK) - not "cheap".

I think the best place to look for a cheap but good guitar is in the pawn shops where you can examine it, try it yourself, and bargain for the price. Many musicians sold good used guitars to the pawn shops. Go for it, you will get a cheap but good one.

Buffalo airport to Greyhound station?

Ben

I'm taking a flight to Buffalo on Friday, but from there I'm taking a Greyhound bus to Toronto. What would be the best (and cheapest) way to get to the station from the airport? Is there a public Metro option, or do I have to take a cab? I'm traveling with one piece of rolling luggage and an acoustic guitar (in it's case).

Answer
You could take the metro to the general area of the bus station and walk a little bit to get there. I did a general search and it looks like it would be pretty easy. Of course you would have to type in the info specific to your trip (arrival dates, time, etc) but the trip planner makes it pretty easy. Here's the link to the site...I typed in departing from buffalo airport and going to greyhound station...you'll have to pick the corresponding tags in their drop down menu but its not hard at all.

http://www.nfta.com/metro/trip_planner.asp

Or, if you wanna spend like thirty bucks on a cab, go for it. I used to live right by the airport and to get downtown by cab used to be around 25 bucks or so.

Good luck!

Is a Little Martin a good beginner guitar?

Brandie

I am a beginner as far as playing the acoustic guitar-I've only borrowed from friends and played a little that way, and I have also played the ukulele a little bit, but I would like to actually like to start learning to play the guitar, I like the idea of the Little Martin, because I am a smaller person and sometimes the bigger guitars I've used have been overwhelming. Is this a good guitar to start with? Does it feel like you are actually playing guitar or does it feel like you are playing a kids guitar? If you do not like the little martin, what other acoustic guitars would you recommend? Thanks!
Those of you saying it is not a good guitar to learn on, please give reasons as to why, Also, as I said in my question, I have used full size guitars that belonged to my friends to mess around with chords and tabs, they were a tad overwhelming and uncomfortable. I could still play around with it, but I thought maybe a smaller would be more comfortable.

Answer
No, not at all. Just because Ed Sheeran plays one doesn't make it a good guitar. I like the idea of a smaller body but you're better off with a full size guitar with a smaller body, like a grand concert or auditorium size. The low end Martins aren't even made in USA anymore.

I like Martins and own two of them (OM-45 and M-38) but the little ones aren't the best for a beginner.

Edited to add:

>> I have used full size guitars that belonged to my friends to mess around with chords and tabs, they were a tad overwhelming and uncomfortable.<<

Most likely your friends had dreadnoughts, which are full size with a large body. There are other full size guitars that have a smaller body. It's confusing, but "full size" refers not to the size of the body but to the scale length. A full size guitar has a scale length of 24 1/2" to 25 1/2", where scale length is the distance from the nut to the saddle, that is, the length of the part of the strings that vibrates.

So these guitars, called parlor guitars, have a small body but are still full size:

http://www.goodallguitars.com/parlor.htm

So are these grand concert size:

http://www.goodallguitars.com/grandconcert.htm

And again, it's because regardless of their smaller bodies they have a full size scale length. The Little Martin, however, does not have a full size scale length. While Ed Sheeran seems to do okay with it, most people are better off with a full size guitar and a smaller body size.

Hope that clears things up.

How to learn to play electric guitar better?

DW from FL

My 27 year old son just bought his first electric guitar, he's had acoustic guitars before. He lives out in a rural area and doesn't know anyone to teach him or practice with. How can he connect with other people with the same interest? Or is there instructional videos or CD's?

Answer
Hello there,

Connect? Well, given his situation, he is not likely to physically connect with other players. So, he should consider on-line types of connections. One thing I can suggest is that he joins some of the on-line forums. There are many guitar specific forums and discussion boards. In all of those I belong to, less experienced players seeking advice are always welcome. Reading their questions and seeing their thoughts about things, helps old geezers like me keep in touch with younger players.
Here are some of my favorite forums
Surf Guitar 101.
http://surfguitar101.com/
Fender Guitar forum Strat-Talk
http://www.strat-talk.com/
Ultimate Guitar forum
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/indâ¦
Telecaster.com forum
http://www.tdpri.com/
Line 6 Community
http://line6.com/support/index.jspa

As you can probably guess from those forums, I am an old time surf guitar player and play mostly Fender guitars and amps. There are forums for about every conceivable niche of music. Just do a Google search for a forum in the type of music or guitar that interests him the most. Most of the forums do not require you to be a member to read the messages there, just to post messages. So, he can browse around the forum to see if it is on interest to him. You get to know guys there that you will never be able to physically meet. Sometimes, you wish you could meet up with them. A lot a great guys there.

Instructional materials? Frankly there is no substitute for lessons from a teaching pro. But not everyone has access to one. As a kid, I did not. There was no one around where I grew up who taught rock guitar (rural Indiana in the 1950s). I learned by any way I could. Listened to songs. If I could find a book about the guitar I got it. I played with anyone I could. Older kids who play (who also had never had lessons) would give me tips and show me how to do various techniques. I figure those guys unwittingly taught me every bad habit and improper technique they knew. Took me years to get straightened out. Today there are a lot of decent resources on-line.

Here is a link to the 1st in a series of 12 video lessons. These are targeted at absolute beginners and cover the basics of the electric guitar pretty well. Good place to start. Gets him a foundation in the basics. He can ignore the part in the video where that guy says he will send out the lessons. They are all on Youtube now. He used to email them to you individually.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxhxIV0I5â¦

Download this chord chart to your computer. It is a handy way to look up how to play any chord.
http://www.tabguitarlessons.com/downloadâ¦

He needs to learn to read tabs. Tabs is a shorthand method of writing guitar music and is commonly used these days. Fortunately it is quick and easy to learn. Here is an article explaining tabs.
http://www.howtotuneaguitar.org/lessons/â¦

When he wants to learn some particular song, do a Google search for the song title and the word tabs. That will give you the sites that have the tabs for that song. Then go to Youtube and do a search there using the title of the song and the word lesson or the words how to play. There are a lot of good instructional videos there. (and a lot of worthless ones because they do not really teach anything).

Also for new techniques he wants to learn, search at Youtube. For example say he wants to learn to sweep pick for playing metal. You will find a video like this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Aj2wx9PYâ¦

Also there are some good videos from know guitar players there. Joe Satriani has a lot of great videos and he is a great teacher.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNDyI5b3Fâ¦
Paul Gilbert, Michael Angelo Batio and Yngwie Malsteen have videos there also (as examples).

One other piece of advice is get a decent amp and speaker. I do not like the small practice amps (10 to 20 watts of power and a 6 or 8 inch speaker). The speaker in those make you sound thin and tinny. They do not have enough power to handle gain and distortion so they run out of head room. Any 1x12 combo amp is a good beginner amp. If you buy a used one, a used 1x12 combo sells for about the price of a new small practice amp. The 12 inch speaker will give a richer fuller tone. An amp with built in effects is a good idea for beginners because it saves the cost of buying effects pedals. A good beginner amp is the Fender Mustang II 40 watt 1x12 combo digital modeling amp. It is very versatile.

I am a beginner. I've got almost no experience. I would like to learn chords and pretty much cover songs. Mostly Foo fighters and other rock songs, until I eventually learn chords and write my own songs. But for now I want a decent acoustic guitar. If you could give me the price and a link or tell me where can I buy it that would be great.

Answer
If your looking just for a decent one, but nothing special (reliable, durable, ok sounding) then I'd go for a Tanglewood. http://www.tanglewoodguitars.co.uk/products/acoustic/evo_exotic/evolution/TW28.html It's just short of £200 but you could probably get it cheaper in a store like Thomann.
If you don't want to spend that much money, then take a look at this one. http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_squier_sa105_bk.htm
I can't guarantee that the sound is that good (Fenders are only really good when they're over £/$/⬠700..

What do you think would be the cheapest I can get this guitar?

Q. What I would like is a Acoustic Guitar , 6 String
What is the cheapest I can get this in the UK? It dosen't have to be great quality just the absaloute CHEAPEST!!!!!
Thankyou (:

Answer
go to a pawn shop, because you'll find guitars that are really good, but people couldn't afford to keep them. they are also really cheap there, and you'll be happier than if you buy a cheaply made knock off somewhere. look at the whole guitar, check that the neck isn't broken, strum it a little, make sure it sounds decent. if the neck isn't straight don't get it. you'll probably need to get it re-strung at your local music store. i would recommend elixer strings, they are like 13$ US, i dunno how much they would be in the UK. have fun! guitars are the best

Hello,

Currently I am learning songs but I do not feel that this is the best way to learn. I want to start getting into song writing but I have no clue how to do this. What should I do? Should I learn chords and scales? What are the essentials for a good practice?
Any practice advice is welcome.

Thank you,
Jack

Answer
Hello there,

That is a good question. Everyone asks about how to learn on their own. No one has asked how to structure their learning. Structure is something you get from private lessons. The instructor has a plan of exercises lined up for you to work through. So as a student you never have to think about the structure of your learning.

I will give this some thought and add on to my answer.

Later,

Since you are learning on your own, I am going to guess you never have really learned the basics of how to play. My guess is you just starting learning chords to songs and that is the extent of your knowledge. There are some basic fundamentals you need to learn first.

Start with this series of video lessons on Youtube. This guy as a series of 12 videos there. You can find the others in the related videos sections. Before they were put on Youtube, you used to have to sign up for them at his website and he emailed them out to you. (That is why he says that in the videos). The lessons are all there on Youtube now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxhxIV0I5T8&feature=related

Work through those at your own rate. Don't necessarily need to spend a week on each lesson. But if you need that much time take it. He uses an electric in the videos, but most of the material translates to the acoustic very well.

You need to learn to read and write tabs. Here is an article about tabs.
http://www.howtotuneaguitar.org/lessons/the-basics/how-to-read-guitar-tab/

Here is a handy chord chart in PDF format. Down load this to your computer. Then you don't need to buy a chord book to see how to play chords.
http://www.guitarnotes.com/guitar/notes2/ultimate11.shtml

There are other techniques to learn beyond what is in the 12 video lessons. Those are just the most basic skills. Strumming techniques, sweep picking, finger picking, tremolo picking, gallop picking, legato and much more. As you hear about a technique, go to Youtube and search there for a video lesson about it. For example you want to do speed picking like in metal or hard rock. In the search box at Youtube type in speed picking lesson. You will see some videos about that.

Here are some tips. I think Joe Satriani is a great teacher.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNDyI5b3Fh8

Legato. This is an advanced technique. After you have done the basics start working on this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTl9GOSb_Fo&feature=PlayList&p=D950BB4C81AEDB0C&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=11

At some point you should start learning to improvise. Spend a little practice time just improvising. It is fun and relaxing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysN31SKkroU&feature=channel

As you are working on your guitar techniques you should also be spending some time learning some theory.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlVpR0cl1Uo&feature=related

Whole note has a good section of theory lessons. Here is one on modes. On the first page you will see reference to some other modes and scales lessons that are worth looking at.
http://www.wholenote.com/default.asp?src=l&l=4230&p=1

Wholenote is a good place to search for theory lessons. How to construct chords for example.

So, you should be working on techniques, basics first and then start working in one or more new (to you) techniques each week. Also as you go along, do spend some time working on playing songs. That is worthwhile. Not that it teaches you how to play, But rather, it shows you why you need to learn all that stuff in the exercises. You see first hand how the techniques are needed to play songs. Don't just learn easy songs. Some easy are okay. We all want to play songs. Nothing different whether you are a beginner or advanced player. That is the whole goal of learning. Try adding some songs you really want to play. Whether they are easy or not. If you really want to play them that gives you the motivation to learn. If the songs have some difficult parts, great. That gives you some challenges to over come. That is how you progress. I can't learn a whole song in a single sitting. I break them up into bits and learn a bit at a time. Pick the riff you like best. Learn that part of the song. Practice the same riff over and over each time you practice. Then the next day or two, add another bit of the song. Then practice the first and new bit over and over. And so on until you have the entire song learned. Also, it is all right to work on several songs at the same time. Just learn them in bits. That way you have several songs (or bits of songs) to use in your practice sessions. The idea is to keep mixing, learning techniques, playing songs and learning theory. The more techniques you learn, the more tools you have available to play in the songs. It is a building process. Keep adding to each, techniques, songs and theory.

later,

Hello again,

I just read your question about what guitar to buy. I did not like any of those answers.

Hey I play an electric guitar but sadly I'm a noob at it, I know the basics but I don't know a whole full song, I want a song with easy leads but yet it will teach me and advance my skills , thanks!

Answer
You will find lots of useful guitar lessons and information here - it works on an "honour system". If you can afford to pay for the lessons then please donate for what you use - imagine it was a pay site. If you can't afford to donate it is no problem at all - the site is free for you :). Updates and new material is pretty much donation dependant. Donations give me more time away from paid work to develop this site andThese songs are kinda simplified versions of the propers songs to give you some cool stuff to play while you are starting out. I am interested in learning how to play, and I would like to learn how to play the acoustic guitar. Would anyone know of a guitar within the price range of 100-200 dollars?
Thanks! :)

Answer
If you are just about to learn then you're quite right in not spending a fortune, and $200 is about right. If you go too cheap you'll end up with a poor quality instrument that will sound terrible and be difficult to play - that's never going to encourage you to continue, so the $150 - $200 mark is about right.
Yamaha do some fairly good guitars at this range such as the F335 ($149 at Amazon).
Something you may not have considered yet is your physical size. Jumbo acoustics can be huge and if you're only a small person you'll struggle a bit. I'd recommend finding a local store and having a look. Pick up & hold as many as you can and find the one that feels most comfortable. (It will no doubt be an expensive model, but this is fine - you just want to find out the body size - and aim for the same but in your price range).

Here's a useful size chart: http://www.cbguitars.com/body-sizes.htm

Good luck with your guitar learning - just don't give up when you're struggling as learning an instrument starts gradual but you soon jump level to level and it just gets easier and easier. Oh and just so you have an idea of what to expect the first few months : your fingers will get sore (strings really cut into the tips) but they harden up & will be a lot easier in time. The muscles in your hands will be killing you after hours & hours of practice - this is normal at first, your hands are simply not used to maintaining certain positions for a long period of time - again it gets much easier with time!

What's a good acoustic guitar for an absolute beginner?

? ?

My 16th birthday is coming up and I wanted to ask for a guitar and I was wondering if there were any good and affordable suggestions for a beginner.

Also, any tips and links would be appreciated. Thanks :)

*Acoustic guitar, btw, no electric.

Answer
This probably isn't what you (or the folks paying for the guitar) want to hear, but a cheap $100 guitar isn't the best choice for a beginner. Actually, it isn't a good choice for anybody. As a beginner, you don't need a fancy guitar, or one with the sweetest tone, but you do need something that won't fight against you. All those cheap guitars at Walmart and amazon.com *look* like decent guitars for a beginner but they're difficult to play and hard to keep tuned. This actually increases the probability that you'll give up trying to learn out of frustration....making the low cost guitar a total waste of money.

If you get a slightly better guitar, you'll improve your chances of success, and have a guitar you won't outgrow in a couple of months. My first choice (balancing cost and quality) would be the Yamaha FG700S: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/yamaha-fg700s-folk-acoustic-guitar
That guitar has a solid wood top for better tone and will last you a long time.
Working downward in quality, tone, and playability, consider these or other guitars by Yamaha, Ibanez, or Epiphone:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-aj-220s-acoustic-guitar
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ibanez-sgt120-sage-series-acoustic-guitar
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/yamaha-f335-acoustic-guitar
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-pr-150-acoustic-guitar

I've supplied links to an online retailer, but it's best if you can buy at a local music store. That way you can see and feel the guitar before buying. You may find that one is more comfortable or easy to hold than another. I realize you can't play yet, but you can have the salesperson play then to see which sounds better to you. Best of luck to you, no matter which guitar you end up with.

what would be the difference in the two guitars and which one is better for beginners. also can i put nylon strings in the acoustic guitar like in the classical ?

Answer
I echo Lester G's reply and add a bit more to your question. An acoustic guitar will test your motivation and drive to continue playing. Once the calluses arrive your progress will be marked for the better if you continue.

As Lester G has said, get a flat-top acoustic to begin playing. Alongside that recommendation, I suggest putting medium-gauge strings on it because they will help you get the calluses you must have. Putting lights or super-light gauges on an acoustic diminishes the projection you will want. Be determined to first get the calluses and then focus strongly on chords and their progressions, the Chromatic Scale for chords and notes, and learn how to read sheet music for the guitar. Do not rely upon tablature to play complete songs. Tablature is good for short riffs and turnarounds, but they are most troublesome in playing the entire piece.

Above all, take lessons if you can. Such a decision will pay off in the long run.

I always played my friend's guitar and need to buy my own one.
What are some good suggestions on low-end acoustic guitars, as I am on a semi-budget.

Thanks for any help!

Answer
I second finding a good music store, preferably one that gives lessons and has a good, helpful staff. They should be able to help. I would caution against buying used, especially on Craigslist, until you've played for a bit and have some idea how to evaluate the condition of a guitar, especially an acoustic. You'll also want to have one set up properly so it plays nicely and stays in tune. Again, a shop with a good luthier on staff will help greatly.

As for specific brand recommendations, there are many great guitars. If you can swing something in the $350-$400 range new, a Seagull, Simon & Patrick or Art & Lutherie (all made by the same company in Canada) are great choices, as is the Taylor Big Baby, If you are looking to spend less, both Alvarez and Yamaha make some very nice, low cost acoustics.

I want to write a song about my boyfriend and I want to write lyrics along with an acoustic guitar part. What are some tips for writing the lyrics? Also, what are some tips to writing an acoustic guitar part to a song? Thanks loves. <3

Answer
Two ways.

1: Lyrics first (recommended)
Start by just writing down everything you want to say. It might be very "poetic" or it might just be very specific. Both make great songs. Do not worry about it fitting into any kind of rhyme pattern or lyrical style. Then, one note at a time, write the music by making a FEELING. Put the words to this. Most of the time what you have written will already fit right in, but if they don't, at this stage you can start worrying about making your paragraph into lines of a song, rhyming (if desired it is not necessary for a high quality song).

2. Music first:
Do not worry about what you want to say to/about him. Just pick one note at a time, or one chord at a time. If nothing is working look up new chords. Create a feeling. Then describe what you are writing about and there are your lyrics.

Tips on acoustic writing: If you are somewhat skilled, folksy riffs sound great with a girl's voice. The great thing about writing acoustic parts is that very simple chords, if played cleanly and perhaps with an interesting strumming pattern, can sound very, very good.

All I asked was question, don't judge please. Thanks.

We the Kings - Check Yes Juliet... Pretty easy
I first learned it when I was looking for easier songs, I was a beginner once too... And I had obviously no taste of music then either.. o.o

I really like the sound of jimi hendrix's guitar in "hear my train coming" i realize that's a 12 string custom guitar someone made for him - but i like the deep sound is the point. I also like the sound of gibson hummingbirds and especially older dove models. Even if i had 2000-3000 dollars i sure as hell wouldn't spend it on a guitar. Any suggestions are welcome - i was considering getting a guild. Thanks.

Answer
Understand what you are saying and the guitars you mentioned have such characteristics. I too have played those models in the past.

Funny you also have in mind a Guild, which Gibson had taken over some time back. Found a Guild jumbo at one time that certainly projected the deep tones that were impressive. So, you're on the right track, but agree that there are many others one can choose from without going into the thousand dollar range.

Suggest that you hunt down some of the Breedlove models. These are the only ones that (to me) had the trait and particular attention built into some of them that highlighted the bass strings and were reinforced to play with such expression.

$900.00 seems to be your goal, and it is possible to have this much of an incentive to purchase towards many sales reps at some music stores and guitar shops. Realize that shelf prices reflect a percentage markup on about every unit they will sell according to their price tags. But there should always be room to negotiate when we are talking a grand in what anything may be worth in the store. One could possibly cut a few hundred bucks off, in order to seal a deal with both parties involved.

(And likewise, if it has to be a few hundered more for a model that you know is 'it'. Are you willing then to go ahead and get this instrument, even after you tried to bargin it down?)

Don't be put off either by where they are made nowadays. The quality and overall instruments' performance and durability have changed drastically over the decades. The Guild I had picked up that one day was made in China. Surprise.

It may take a bit of a hunt on your part. But believe me, it could be worth what one is really looking for in their personal preferences in a guitar. Don't ignor those acoustic/electrics too and plug 'em in.

What electric guitar should I get?

Alisha

I've been playing for almost a year now (11 months) and I currently have an electric acoustic guitar (Fender CF-100 CE Folk). I'm planning to get an electric, but I'm not sure which to get. I'd say I'm at the beginner to intermediate level, but I want a guitar that can last me a while as I get better. Also, my price range is less than $500, if that is possible. Less than $400 would be the best. Thanks!

Answer
There are two issues.
1. What 'sound' are you looking for? Humbuckler or Single coil?
a. Establish what sound: The best thing you can do is go to a Sam Ash or Guitar Center and play some...you can also try some better quality used ones they have in the store which will boost the quality of the price range.

2. Resale value. As you get better you will want to trade up in all likelihood. So the suggestion would be Fender made in Mexico pre 90s or early 90s as they are US components assembled there. Fenders are like legos as well, easy to trade out pickups etc..and remember, import guitars have different sizing than US guitars for the most part....I honestly don't think you can find a better value and they are very under valued used..you can grab a nice tele or strat for that all day long and always trade out the pickups...but you'll have a quality guitar. Gibson Epiphone Korean or Japan are a good value used as they don't hold thier resale value well unless its japan from the 70s on... don't know what kind of music you want to play, which also makes a difference...don't buy off brand, don't buy China new, although they are now producing some very higher quality hollow body's in the 900+ range...and they do make the solid body Gretch now, which as decent reviews...

Go to a big store where you have a variety to chose from...if you have an internet phone, then do some research on the reviews and pricing....and don't be pressured to buy ...and make them 'set up' the guitar first...neck adjustments, intonation etc...(which they generally through in)...(take someone who knows guitar necks, new or used has to be good...)

Oh, not to forget, use the type of amplifier you will be using..a good amp makes a lot of difference..and one with the least amt of 'effects' as they don't sound good and you can get a pedal for which is always better...

Good luck...but I'm serious when I say those Fender MIM Tele and Strats are undervalued (and NOT THE SQUIRES) ...and the older ones are better... I'm a Gibson guy, as well as put some together for my roommates friends who perform...etc...don't be pushed to buy something you don't like...and a Fender is simply easy to resell and upgrade to what ever sound you want latter if your taste change....

Besides the guitar straps, carry bag, and pick, what else should a beginner get for an acoustic electric guitar?

Answer
well, as mikey points out an amp, cable, and tuner are obvious choices. Some less obvious choices would include a couple extra sets of strings, a capo, a guitar stand, Some good acoustic guitar songbooks as well as a good chord book, guitar polish, a slide, maybe an instructional DVD or a gift certificate for a month of guitar lessons.

Should I buy the guitar kit with DvD's included and strap and such. oR BUY A BETTER GUITAR AND ALL THE OTHER items seperately? This will be a birthday present for my 14 yr old son who has started last year on an electric but lost interest, says he would rather try an acoustic. I would say 500. would be the higher end of what I would spend. Your experienced input much appreciated.

Answer
When buying a guitar, like anything else, you get what you pay for. But lets be honest, most people who start off playing guitar give up within a few months, and the guitar player just ends up a few hundred dollars poorer. When buying a guitar, buy something cheap, but easy to play.

The best acoustic guitar for a beginner is an inexpensive Yamaha FG700s. This is a cheap guitar that is very easy to play, and it looks and sounds great. This is hands down the best choice for a newbie guitarist. Another option would be an Takamine G-340 guitar. You can find both for around $200. But do not buy that Esteban guitar it is very badly made even by cheap guitar standards.

So hold off on buying a $500 guitar until you are sure that playing the guitar is something he is going to stick with. You already lost money on the electric guitar don't make the same mistake twice.

With regards to buying a kit or the accessories individually. I wouldn't buy the kit the accessories included are throw aways and you are better off buy a little better guitar for almost the same price. You can buy the accessories later when needed, which you will end up doing later anyway becuase the ones that come in the kit are garbage. And then have your son use You Tube and Google to search for free lessons before spending money on DVD lessons. There are a ton of free lesson out there. That is what I did when I first started learning and then when I needed more instruction and wanted to move ahead in my playing did I start buying DVD's and paying for Online Lessons.

Just my 2 cents.....
