I just picked up an acoustic guitar a few days ago and i'm trying to learn how to play. I'm currently trying to play a few easy songs by just reading tabs. I have the intro to "Never Too Late" by Three Days Grace down and Californication a few parts into it. I just find it so hard to do chords. What would you guys suggest to me?

Answer
With chords-heck, with anything you learn on guitar-take it SLOWLY. Your fingers have a mind of their own and will be able to use it when you've been practicing things over and over again (same as if you had to memorize facts for a test).

First, learn how to read chord diagrams:
http://www.cyberfret.com/chords/primer/index.php

When tackling a new chord, don't move on to the next one until you get that particular chord down FIRST. Don't get ahead of yourself: start with the basic chords (http://www.cyberfret.com/chords/beginning-7/index.php) then work your way up to barre chords and power chords. There are other types of chords as well.

What I do when learning a new chord is I only focus on my left hand, not doing anything with my right. I watch what my fingers do when I place them on the correct strings and do it over again; I fix what needs to be fixed. Once I've got the chord down, I play a down strum and listen to hear that all of the appropriate strings are ringing-or not.

I'm going to be taking a class in college next semester to learn to play guitar. It requires that we get an acoustic guitar. I know nothing about guitars so it would be great if anyone could suggest certain ones to look into or certain types of wood/strings/whatever that would be best for me. I also don't have a huge budget so cheaper guitars that are still good quality would be prefered.
Thanks. :]

Answer
The Dean Playmate is the best beginners guitar you'll get. It's a cool guitar for only 70 bucks.

Here's some reviews for the Playmate and other good entry-level guitars.

What is a good beginner guitar to buy for $100-$200 budget?

Trystin

I would like to start back up my hobby playing the acoustic guitar...
However I don't know what's a good brand to get?
I've been looking online everywhere, reading reviews, and my understanding of the terminology has weakened.

I'm a fairly small person; 5ft 1in, so I have short arms, fingers, and small hands (I have even compared my hands to 3rd graders...Theirs were still bigger, haha).
I was thinking of going for a 38" guitar.
Does this mean the frets are closer to each other? Because I think I had a 41" and I could barely reach certain chords without placing my arm, hand and fingers in such an awkward position.

I'm just looking for a decent guitar, good resonance, and wont need constant tuning.
Looking for any kind of advice and brand suggestions :) Thanks!

Answer
Total length measurements like 38" or 41" are something you only see in ad copy for low-quality bargain-basement guitars. They are best regarded as a sign that you're looking in the wrong place.

The way real guitars are categorized is by the scale length (the length of the part of the string that vibrates, in other words the distance from the nut to the saddle) and the body size. A full size guitar is one with a scale length of 24.5 - 25.5". This would be the most appropriate for you. Shorter scale lengths (3/4 and 1/2 size guitars) are made for young children and are usually of low quality.

Body size does not vary much on classical guitars and is fairly small (you didn't say whether you wanted a classical or a steel-string. Both are acoustic, meaning not electric). Steel-string guitars have a range of body sizes and patterns, which often differ in their names and exact dimensions among different manufacturers. Other than avoiding sizes that are actually uncomfortable, you should select the body style by how it sounds, not by how big you are. You would probably not like the large "dreadnought" size, which is the commonest in most stores, but there are certainly other options available. Visit a reputable guitar store and ask to look at small-bodied guitars. Asking for "parlor guitars" may also be productive. If your hands are small, you may also wish to play special attention to the neck width and thickness of the guitars you try out. Steel-string guitars have much narrower necks than classicals do.

In your price range, Jasmine, Epiphone, and Yamaha are good options. Ibanez might also be a good choice as they have a reputation for slim necks.

Is a Squier Bullet Srat a good guitar to start with?

best acoustic guitar delay pedal

best acoustic guitar delay pedal image

I kinda play acoustic pretty well, would like to play electric. Also, what is a tremolo and what amp should I get?

Answer
Hello there,

Yes, a Squier Bullet Strat is a decent guitar to start with. Of course it is not as good as a Fender Standard (made in Mexico) Strat, but it does not cost as much. It is not a top of the line guitar. It is made in a manner to make it less expensive so that beginners can afford it. So do not compare it to top of the line guitars. Compare the Bullet to other beginner level guitars and you will see it is a good beginner guitar.

A tremolo is a type of bridge. The strings rest on a nut at the top of the neck and saddles at the other end of the strings. Same as an acoustic. Except that in the case of the Strat, the saddles are individually adjustable. On an acoustic a single saddle rests on a rosewood bridge fixed to the body. On the Strat, the saddles rest on a plate that may be tilted by using the tremolo arm (also called a whammy bar). When you tilt the saddles, you get a different pitch. So with a tremolo bridge, you can bend the pitch of the strings. Very similar to bending a single string with your finger. But in this case you bend all the strings at the same time.

Most beginners under estimate the importance of the amp and speakers in how good they will sound. You only sound as good as your speakers, no matter what guitar you are playing. I do not recommend the small practice amps. I think they all have lousy speakers. The small speakers make you sound thin and tinny. I suggest getting a 1x12 combo amp. A combo amp is where the amplifier and the speaker is in the same cabinet. 1x12 means it as one 12 inch speaker. A 12 inch speaker will give you a richer fuller tone. Because the 1x12 amp will be slightly more powerful and the 12 inch speaker has a higher power rating, the amp and speaker will handle distortion better (plenty of headroom). If you look for a used 1x12 you can probably find one for about the same price as a new small practice amp. The 12 inch speaker will sound so much better. I have never heard a lousy speaker in a 1x12 by Fender, Vox, Marshall, Peavey, Crate or Line 6. If I had to recommend one amp for a beginner it would be the Line 6 Spider 30 watt 1x12 combo. It is easy to use. It has some basic built in effects such as reverb, delay, distortion and chorus so you may not need those effects pedals. The 12 Celestion speaker as a decent tone. It is not expensive new. There are a lot of used ones on the market so you may find one at a very good price.

I am considering buying an Electro-Harmonix Little Big Muff and a Behringer Vintage Analog Delay VD400. Are these good choices?

Answer
You really can't go wrong with the Little Big Muff. I'm not really sure about that delay.

You should get these various essentials:

Danelectro Fish and Chips (EQ Pedal)
Danelectro Surf and Turf (Compressor)
Boss NS-2 (Noise Suppressor)

And then you can get other various pedals for other effects.

Wah:
Ibanez Weeping Demon (I have it and recommend it)
Morley Bad Horsie
Vox Big Bad Wah
Dunlop Crybaby

Chorus:
Boss CH-1 Super Chorus (I have it and recommend it)
Electro-Harmonix Small Clone (Great analog chorus pedal, and probably more along the lines of any chorus effect in those genres)
Danelectro FAB Chorus (I tried it, it's a decent pedal for $15 on Musician's Friend)

Phaser: (I personally don't own any phasers, but I've tried some of these)
MXR M-101 Phaser
Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter

Flanger:
Boss BF-3 Flanger
MXR EVH-117 (Van Halen Signature phaser)
Danelectro Fab Flange (again, for $15 you got a decent budget pedal)

Tremolo:
Voodoo Lab Tremolo
Danelectro CT-1
Boss TR-2

Also, it wouldn't hurt to get a Boss Acoustic Simulator (AC-3). I use one, and in combination with the Super Chorus, it sounds great.

I hope this helps.

Where can I find a cheap 6 string acoustic guitar?

Olivia

Where can I find an acoustic guitar for under $200. I have been searching for a guitar for the past few months and I have seen many cheap ones that don't really work for me. Also, in your opinion, what color looks best on an acoustic guitar? I don't care about the technicality of it, I just want an opinion. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Check with your local music store and see if they have any marked-down flat top acoustics. You could visit pawn shops and find a great one at little cost and you could find one that has a warped neck, outlandish heighth of the strings from the fretboard, and has holes where holes ought not to be. Take a guitarist with you should you choose to shop at the pawn shops.

Nicks and scratches will not affect the instrument's tone. I have an old parlor Gibson acoustic that looks like hammered hell, but it plays better than ever before.

The color of the guitar will be at your choosing. Select an acoustic with a blonde or a honey-blonde finished top. For the least expensive brands, the back and sides will normally be made of mahogany.

I am planning to learn guitar and need my own acoustic guitar - I don't want to pay a fortune, but i also have no idea what is a fortune is when talking about guitars. I would like any info you have on brands, price ranges vs quality, etc. Thanks!

Answer
I've been a subscriber to Guitar Player magazine since the mid 70's, and they always have hard hitting reviews of musical equipment.

In short, the Fender acoustics have always gotten good reviews.

Here's the thing, if you truely want a guitar to "last," you have to get one with a "solid top." Most low end cheaper acoustics will simply say something like.."spruce top." this is NOT a solid top. If the guitar has a solid top, believe me, they will emphasize this point.

Solid tops are preferable because they age better...improve in tone, and can literally be handed down for generations.

Of course, solid tops are more expensive, but not out of reach.

Here's a nice Fender acoustic with a solid top with the bonus of having a built in pickup, which you might consider...especially if you plan on doing some open mikes one day or performning in a band?

Explore the web site...there are many very nice guitars well under the 5 bill mark. Also, Guitar Center owns Musician's Friend, so they are basically the same store.

Is the Yamaha NTX900 Guitar suitable for playing flamenco?

Terri

I'm a tween-sized adult woman, and I'm finding it difficult to find a flamenco guitar with a small enough neck. My left hand is smaller than 7.5 inches and reach and speed is a question for me. I considered small-scale classical guitars from 580mm to 615 mm but they are more expensive than I can afford, and I really don't want to take a chance on lowering the action on one and then not like it and not be able to return it.

So I found a Yamaha nylon guitar line Rodrigo y Gabriela helped design and now play. Gab's guitar is the NCX model which is a classical and is marketed as good for flamenco. The neck is the same as other guitars so it's too big for me.

The NTX900 model is NOT market as good for flamenco but is for Latin music and pop. The guitar is a hybrid between electric and acoustic guitars. The body is like a thin classical but it has a neck which is thin, narrow and radiused, much like an electric guitar. The neck is wider than an electric but narrower than a classical acoustic. The action is marketed as being low. Rod shreds on this model so I'm thinking the action is plenty fast for flamenco.

The other model that is marketed for flamenco is thicker and sturdier than the NTX model. So I wonder if the NTX is okay for flamenco and it's techniques.

Can anyone help. I'm going to try to post the links so you can see the guitar I'm asking about.

Thanks.

Answer
By tween sized I assume you mean petite? In any case a Classical, Flamenco or even there smaller brother Requinto will have around a 53mm nut width or a little over 2 inch, its just the way they are, as it lends to more string spacing for easier finger style playing, unfortunately tween sized women were not part of the design process, But not to worry, your technique matters very little to a guitar, I actually use a Flamenco picking style, as in all 5 digits, but I don't really play Flamenco style music, I suppose I could, its just not my cup of tea, my acoustic of choice is a plain old Flat top Dread, the one I play the most is 1" 7/8 at the nut, although my next favorite is 1" 11/16 at the nut, and to be honest I don't notice the difference, But in the end you'll need to make the trade off, do you want the smaller neck or the wider string spacing? although there are hybrids out there, one that comes to mind is the Godin Multiac, Thing doesn't know if its a Classical or an Electric, and if you were to cough up the dough for a 13 pin synth which its equipped for it could be any instrument you wanted it to be. not cheap but seriously cool, So it just kinda goes to show the guitar is just a guitar, you can play any style you wish with it, provided you learn it, in which case, Eh I suppose you could learn over the internet and from books, its not like it hasn't been done before, Flamenco may a bit harder but I'm sure with practice it could be done, Did you check your community collage, sometimes they have classes, I have a cousin that teaches Classical and Flamenco at one, he actually builds these types of guitars, but at a $6000 dollar starting price and 5 month waiting period they make that Multiac look like a bargain.

Answer
Look at http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ or http://www.guitarcenter.com/. My personal suggestion is to never buy used, ESPECIALLY online. You never know until afterwards if the neck is warped or something else ridiculous and annoying. In my experience, a couple of the best brands to look at are Washburn and Seagull. Takamine is good too, but they have a slightly higher price range. They have well-priced guitars of surprisingly good quality. The first acoustic guitar I ever had was a Washburn D10SCE, and even today I still don't see myself replacing it anytime soon. :) Expect to pay around $250-$500 if you want an instrument that will last a while even after you've become a good player.

What is the cheapest, best kind of acoustic guitar to buy?

I'm in 8th grade, and Ive been playing the guitar for a couple months now.. Im kinda thinking about pursuing a career as a musician, and I'd like to buy a new guitar with a better sound quality then the one I have..?? what would be the best brand of acoustic guitar to buy?

Answer
The term, "cheapest, best kind of acoustic guitar" seems a contradiction in terms. Some of the less expensive guitars for beginner and intermediate players are Alvarez, Ibanez, Ephiphone, Fender, Yamaha, Takamine, and Regal. This is not an inclusive list, however.

On the other side--the best kinds of acoustic guitars--would be Martin, Taylor, Collings, Gibson, Takamine, Guild, McPherson, and a few others. At the top of the list of brands as the best I would consider the classic Ramirez of Spain, coming in around $50,000 apiece.

I've never really had proper guitar lessons but I have been playing for about 7 years and I'm probably at intermediate level I guess.... anyway, this week I finally got rid of the first electric guitar I bought about 5 years ago, it was a cheap and nasty stratocaster imitation.

So now I'm looking to buy a new guitar but having trouble deciding which one would be right for me, its a hard decision. I have already been to a few music shops to try out guitars such as telecasters, strats and a couple hollowbodies but I'm still unsure at this stage because anything sounds and feels better that my first one haha. I kinda tried asking for suggestions from the people in the shops but they weren't all that helpful.

Some of the genres I like are rock (such as Red Hot Chili Peppers [including early funk stuff], Jimi Hendrix), alternative bands (like Radiohead, Dot Hacker, John Frusciante) and I am also really interested in learning some jazz style guitar, i love that sound.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm expecting I'll probably have a Stratocaster recommended but I just wanted to consider other options like maybe the Fender Jaguar because I know Hendrix and Frusciante and Josh Klinghoffer played them. Do you think a jaguar/jazzmaster with single coils would generally suit those styles?
I'd also appreciate any technical info about guitars eg. pick-ups, strings, amps etc

I'm in New Zealand and my budget it probably up to about NZ$900 / US$750 (I don't mind buying second hand either)

Thanks :)
Oh, and also with each style of guitar (eg. Strat, Jag) you have different models at a range of prices (like Classic/Standard, Blacktop etc) so if you have any insights, don't hold back. Thanks.

Answer
Since you've been playing for seven years, you can best answer this question yourself by going to the music shops and trying everything in your price range. There's no shame in buying used and you can usually find a better guitar for your money that way. Just don't be in a rush. Explore your options. Go to all the places you would consider buying from and try every one that interests you. In addition to trying out the the Fenders, you might want to try out some semi acoustic electrics. Epiphone and Ibanez have some nice ones in your price range.

That's definitely the shop i'm going to buy my guitar from as I have got good guitars from and they have good service etc. My question is, is that a good choice for my first 12 string guitar? I it a reliable brand? Is it a good price for the quality they claim? My price range is below $500

If you can suggest a better one they are here
http://www.rockshop.co.nz/04/start.php

THANKS FOR ANY HELP :)

Answer
The best 12 string I ever owned was an Epiphone. Sadly, it got destroyed. Epiphones are mostly copies of their big brother Gibson's designs. Despite they are manufactured under cheaper methods, they rival the more expensive Gibson's. The 12 I had was a natural finish version copy of the model Gibson 12 string that Gordon Lightfoot plays. The one I had played better than the Gibson's I had played. I would suggest you go in and try it out. If they have more than one, ask to play them all before choosing. Identical guitars are not identical sounding and playing.

Answer
Download some free, basic guitar chords in the hopes that you will be able to form them correctly.

Toughen up your calluses. It takes about three weeks of daily practice to build them beyond the pain.

In your free tutorage on the Internet, find a website that illustrates rhythm patterns and moods.

All chords that you gather from the Internet should be drawn on paper for quick referencing. Start a music file if there is no problem in having paper to write upon and a pen or pencil available.

In several years after you have worked hard enough, invest in a quality chord book and professional lessons.

Thx

Answer
Start with a nylon string acoustic guitar. Buy a high quality, but inexpensive guitar. I recommend Seagull brands starting at $225, but you can get cheaper imports.

Metal strings are hard on the fingers for beginners. Electric guitar is played differently than acoustic. I don't recommend starting with electric.

Get a basic chord book. Find a teacher. You can start learning from anyone who is more experienced than yourself. Play together.

Learn to read tabature. This is where guitar music is written by showing the actual finger positions on the fretboard.

Get a songbook of your favorite tunes.

Never put down the guitar.

What is the cheapest price that I can get an American made acoustic guitar for?

Camaro322

I'm looking for an American made acoustic guitar to replace the basic starter-kit model that I have right now, so anything would be an improvement. New or used doesn't matter to me, so long as it's playable. The same can be said for brand, as I have no preference. Any information (model, manufacture year, etc.) would be helpful. I've been looking all over the internet, but information is really scattered. Thank you in advance!

Answer
I don't have the answer you want but, when buying an acoustic the amount of money = quality with sound and the way its built. When buying an acoustic you definitely get what you pay for. I've had cheap acoustics to play around with the warp in a year even with controlled humidity. The good ones, haven't warped and still sound the same as when i bought it. My advice to you would be, save up till memorial day, and go to guitar center (really big sale day), and pick yourself out a guitar that you find suits you best.

I want to learn how to play a guitar, but i don't want to buy a really expensive one or really cheap one. Where can I buy an acoustic guitar for beginners and how much would it cost?

And is it hard to play? I already play the violin and piano.
How long do you think it would take to be ok at it? Do you think being self-taught would be ok?

Answer
$199 for a decent starter steel-string acoustic

You need to learn and practice the chords and hand positions.

It takes practice to get used to it. You get calluses on your fingers. But that's part of it.

You'll be fine being self-taught. But you have to practice correct habits before they become bad. There are a lot of YouTube videos. Practice songs you like, look up chords @ http://www.ultimate-guitar.com. Also learn how to read tabs.

It really helps to practice with songs you know because you know the tempo and how it sounds. It takes a lot of patience and practice everyday. You'll do fine.

Should be fine for a beginner, looks to be a full size, but you can ask the seller a question if you go to his sight again and find out for sure, as to why it's so cheap, who knows. sometimes a dealer will buy a bunch of them at a reduced price from the manufacture and sell them cheap.

Ok, so I'm looking to buy a decent quality microphone so I can just record music straight to my computer. Most importantly, acoustic guitar and singing but maybe a bit of electric stuff too involving amps and that. Trouble is, I know nothing about this stuff. I want one that's reasonably cheap and cost effective if it's possible. Any help greatly greatly appreciated. Also, I live in the UK and if possible no ebay answers.

Answer
great and cheap condenser mic, USB.. needs no audio interface
my choice for low budget but professional recording
Samson C01u - less $100, maybe around $70 or $80

alternative
Rode NT1A - $230

great quality
Shure Beta 87 - $250

Popular pick..
Shure Sm57/58 and 58 beta - $100

if you need to record your electric guitar or mic with 1/4" jack or XLR, I think you need audio interface like digidesign mbox, the cheapest one is mbox mini, maybe around $300, that includes a good software Pro Tools, if you can afford grab it, both hardware and software is great

For me, recording thru the sound card of your pc doesn't do very well.. think well before buying equips..

FREE Online Acoustic Guitar Lesson For Beginners?

Anyone know of any good online sites for free Acoustic Guitar lessons? I am a beginner... sooo.... Any sites for beginners would be good. Thanks!

Answer
Try cyberfret.com. Practice some of their beginner guitar lessons, chords, etc., every day for an hour or two, until you feel comfortable and confident enough with your chords and finger placements. Listen to tones and learn to recognize chords by their sound, then practice with songs you hear and like. The key is practice, practice, practice. By learning proper ways and tones of chords, and then moving towards simple songs you like, you will be able to recognize your own style more and get a feel of (1) the proper way to play chords and (2) your own methods of playing. Once you get a handle on this, seek out others to jam with, because that will keep you motivated to play more, and will allow you to learn from others as well.

What are some good beginner guitar lesson videos on youtube?

Autumn

I have an acoustic guitar and I want to find a beginner lesson(s) online free. My plan is to find a teacher after learning very basic things.

Answer
This one looks pretty good.

I think its a good idea to take lessons from a real person to make sure you get a solid foundation.
Some basic things you'll want to learn are:
Names of the strings
"Open" Chords
Notes of the frets (at least the first 5 frets)

Learn these things and you'll be well on your way. Have Fun!

I currently have a Fender Strat (mexi) and i'm looking to get an acoustic guitar. I have been playing off and on for 6 years or so, and im looking for something of at least comparable quality. I am thinking of spending around $500. Should i be willing to pay more? Definitely won't spend over $1000. I'm not against buying something used either. I prefer a bright sounding guitar, rather than a bluesier tone. Any suggestions model wise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Ive owned this martin for about a year now and have been very happy with its performance so far. The strings on it are a little rough and hard to play but you get used to them. Its a nice acoustic-electric guitar that has great sound and reviews on it. Hope your willin to spend $650 cause this is a good one for the price. Heres the website on musicians friend but you can find it somewhere else if youd like to.

Can you recommend a good acoustic bass guitar?

InHisTime

I am looking into buying a good quality acoustic bass guitar and can only spend around $500. it will mainly be used for acoustic sessions with a couple other acoustic guitars. I would like something that has a full sound but cant afford to pay thousands of dollars. does anyone have any ideas?

Answer
I just started going acoustic shows with a trio I work with, and thought it would be cool to get an acoustic bass. I went in with a $1000 budget, played 7 or 8 of them, and wound up ordering a Dean Exotica Acoustic Bass:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/dean-exotica-quilted-ash-acoustic-electric-bass-guitar-with-aphex

To me, it had the best sound acoustically, and the electronics are great on it.

At $400, you'll still have enough to get a gig bag and some other accessories.

Good luck.

Greetings from Austin, TX

What are the screws on the bridge of my acoustic guitar for?

i have an acoustic guitar by Gibson it is kind of a cheapy but not that bad. i am a beginner and know nothing about guitars. on the bridge of the guitar below where the bridge pins go there are two screws one on the left and one on the right. there used to be a little rubber cover thing above both of these screws but they came off. the right screw on the bridge has come loose. i am wondering if this will affect anything, and what are these screws even for. if you could help me out that would be great. the bridge is glued so its not like the screws are whats holding it on. also if the loose screw is affecting something how do i tighten it?

thx in advance

Answer
Hmm. If the screws are indeed below the bridge pins, they're not for adjusting the saddle height as some have suggested. Height adjustment screws are big knurled things at either end of the saddle, and I don't recall any Gibson acoustic models with them anyway. You do see them on some entry level acoustics though. The saddle sits in a metal carrier with the height adjustment knobs at the ends, and the whole carrier sits in an oversize slot in the bridge. You screw the knobs IN to raise the saddle. But as I said, those knobs are in a different location from yours, and they are big - usually about 3/8" diameter, with knurled edges and a slot for a coin or big screwdriver.

Screws to help hold the bridge on, with or without glue, are usually the sign of a very cheap guitar. Are you SURE this a Gibson? People sometimes talk about "Gibson Epiphones" and "Gibson Maestros", but these are misnomers. I have seen pictures of a Gibson model from 40 years or so ago with a plastic bridge held on with screws, but AFAIK they thought better of it rather quickly.

I sure wouldn't call any real Gibson a cheapie, either. They're pretty much all over $1000 new. I've seen cheap imported guitars with clumsily forged Gibson or Martin logos on the headstock, though.

Anyway, if the screw is helping hold the bridge on, there should be a nut on the inside that you can tighten. You can get at it by loosening the strings and working through the soundhole.

Piezo dots (pickups) are also sometimes installed in that location but I don't think you would be confusing one with a screw once the decorative plug had fallen out.

What brand of acoustic guitar would you suggest I should buy?

Ted

I'm an intermediate player and I have a cheap acoustic guitar and a fender strat and I may buy a new acoustic guitar in the future. I don't really need anything fancy, I just want to know which kind suits best for an intermediate player. I want something with sort of a bright tone and that is high quality. My thoughts are ibanez, fender, taylor, and gibson guitars but I want somebody's expert opinion

Answer
Of the ones you listed, only Taylor bears consideration. Fender acoustic guitars are awful; Ibanez are better but not nearly in a class with Taylor. Gibson charges an obscene amount of money for really mediocre acoustic guitars.

Right now the best bargains to be had in intermediate acoustic guitars are Eastman guitars. They're a little hard to find but their web site has a dealer locator.

If you can spend more, get a McPherson, Goodall, Santa Cruz, or Froggy Bottom.

Questions about buying a bass guitar?

best acoustic guitar 500 pounds

best acoustic guitar 500 pounds image

Kayla

I'm a beginner but hoping to play professional. So I need a bass guitar for a good price that has awesome sound! Any suggestions? Also I need to know what all I need to begin playing as soon as possible. And where should I look for one? Thanks! :) If you can answer any of these questions I would really apreciate it!

Answer
If you REALLY go on to play professionally, chances are that the instrument that is your main gigging axe as a pro will not be the same one you learn on as a beginner. Don't get ahead of yourself. What you need right now is something to learn on. By the time you're ready to buy a pro-quality instrument, you will know enough not to be asking people on Y! answers what you should get...

Do you have an actual budget? You can learn on anything, it's a matter of what you're willing to spend. Figure out what your budget is, go to a music store, and start trying stuff out. Buy the instrument that feels most comfortable in your hands and that you like the look and feel of. The staff should be willing to let you plug it in and try it out. Do the store the courtesy of actually buying from them, don't use their inventory and then go buy from the internet. If there is literally no music store anywhere near you, there are lots of websites; musician's friend, sweetwater, zzounds, and amazon for that matter.

The absolute cheapest bass you can get that is still worth playing is an SX; they're only sold online at www.rondomusic.com. They are cheapest chinese mass-produced instruments, mostly copies of Fender designs, but they are real wood and real hardware and the two I've had played quite well. You can get one for around $100 + shipping.

If you have around $300 (not counting an amp and accessories), look at a Squier from the Vintage Modified or Classic Vibe series. I wouldn't bother with the other lines of Squier, if you can't afford a VM or CV just get the SX from rondo. A Peavey Millenium or Ibanez SR300 is also worth thinking about, especially if you like very slim necks.

If you have more like $500-600, you can think about a standard Fender, or (my personal recommendation) a Yamaha BB424x. There are lots of other brands in that price range too. If you have more money than that to spend, then there are lots and lots of good instruments and you just need to try them out and see what you like; most beginners don't spend that much on a first instrument unless they're very well-heeled.

The other things you'll need are an amplifier, tuner, strap, cord, and preferably a gig bag and stand. Bass can be played fingerstyle or with a pick, you should plan on learning both. Fingers you already have, picks are very cheap (75 cents apiece or so). For an amp you should just get a cheap practice amp to start; rondo sells some for $50 or so (+ shipping), in a store it's likely to run more like $100. Eventually, when you're playing with a band, you'll need to invest at least $500 or so in an amp that has enough power to be heard over pounding drums and wailing guitars. You can get a tuner for $15 or so, straps start at about $7 (but you can spend $100 on a really nice strap if you want), cheap cords are $5 or something but it's worth spending $20 on a good one, gig bags sometimes come with the instrument but cheap ones are $20 separate, a stand will run you another $15.

Basically, I'd say plan on spending $100 on your amp and another $100 on the accessories. If you go to your local craigslist, you can often find a lot of this stuff used for maybe 30-40% less than you would spend on it new. To tell the truth, all of the basses I currently own except one I bought used - a Yamaha BB415 I got for Christmas (that's the only new one), a custom bass I got used, an acoustic bass I got in trade, and an SX I bought from a guy on craigslist.

good left handed acoustic guitar?

Nathan

am looking for an acoustic guitar for up to 500 pounds. I mostly want to be playing song similar to the kooks etc plus am looking for one with a flat thin neck due to the troubles i have had with my old guitar and the neck. are htere any reccomendations?

Answer
Sadly you don't have an abundance of options if you want an affordable all-solid-wood (highly recommended because the sound improves with age) left handed acoustic. This is the one I would suggest:
http://www.guildguitars.com/instruments/search.php?partno=3810520821

Guild makes very good guitars and their quality control is exceptional.
It should be available for about 500 pounds, maybe a little more.

Remember: Solid woods improve with age, laminate woods degrade with age due to the glues hardening and becoming less resonant.
