I have an acoustic guitar that i have learned a little bit on, and im looking to get an electric guitar, should i get a cheap starter pack or get the standard?

Answer
Hello there,

It depends on how long you expect to keep your guitar and what you plan to do with it. If you want to see if you like the electric guitar after switching from acoustic, I would not recommend getting too expensive an electric. Something like a Squier Bullet or Affinity. Those are decent quality guitars for beginners. If you decide you want to stick with the electric, you will probably want to upgrade down the road sometime. Perhaps, you are sure you want to play the electric. In that case, you would probably skip over those entry level guitars. If you want a decent guitar to use to play at home or jam with friends, I would suggest one of the upper end Squier Strats. Those are the Squier Standard, the Classic Vibe and there is one other similarly price Squier that I cannot recall off hand. These guitars are a step down from the Fender Standard, but very close in quality. These are pretty darn good guitars in very way. Actually, I think the Classic Vibe may have a more pure vintage Fender sound than the Fender Standard MIM. The Classic Vibe has pickups that use Alinco magnets the same as Fender Americans do. The Standard MIM has ceramic magnets in the pickups. However, if you plan to gig with this guitar, you should go with the Fender Standard MIM or one of the other Fender Strat models MIM. That is because gigging takes a tole on gear. The Fender Standard will stand up better over time to the beating your guitar will get gigging.

The cost between the upper end Squier Strats and the lower end Fender Strats is not a lot of money. Those guitars are surprisingly close in quality.

There are several models of Fender Strats made at the Mexico plant. The Standard, the Standard HSS, Lone Star and so on. Which model you should get is a matter of personal preference. There is some tonal differences. All great guitars, but each has its own unique tones to fit various niches in playing.

Under no circumstances would I reccomend a starter pack for anyone over the age of 10. The amps are not very good. Moving from the acousitc, you may not realize how important the amp and speakers will be in how you sound. You only sound as good as your speakers, no matter what guitar you are playing. The small speakers in the little practice amps (10 to 25 watts) tend to make you sound thin and tinny. Those amps do not handle gain and distortion all that well (run out of headroom). For those reasons, I suggest a 1x12 combo amp. 1x12 means it has one 12 inch speaker. (If you plan to gig you might want a 2x12). The larger speaker will give you a richer fuller sound. Because the amp is more powerful (30 watts and up) it will handle gain and distortion better. 1x12s are not that expensive. The great thing about them is there are always some used ones on the market. A used 1x12 normally sells for about the price of a new small practice amp. The 1x12 is going to sound a lot better.

Later,

What should I get my best friend for Christmas?

Q. Okay, here's the deal. My bestfriend and I have been bestfriends for 3 years now, so I really want to get something that means a lot, ya know? Here's a few things about her. She's 17 years old. She's into photography, and she likes going to local music shows, she plays acoustic guitar, and she likes to dress real cute! So hey, any ideas would be great! Please and thank you! I'm in need of serious help, considering Christmas is what, 5 days away? Crap!

Answer
If she's into vintage stuff, which she might if she plays guitar, why not give her some vinyl records? You can find them in the back of music stores, and they're generally cheap (most stores have dollar-shelves.) I know, not everyone has a record player, but her parents probably do and if they don't, records are really cool to look at. Speaking of which, you could also get her a record frame ($15-$20).

What is the best way to amplify my acoustic guitar without major modifications?

best acoustic guitars of the world image

Melissa

Hi guys. My name is Melissa and I'm trying to figure out the best option to amplify my acoustic guitar without making any major modifications such as drilling or widening holes. My acoustic guitar is a very old Gibson which was given to me by my grandfather who played jazz guitar in swing bands during World War 2. They really were the greatest generation. He passed away recently and the night before he passed, we spent time together. He told me I should find a way to amplify the guitar so I can play it through an electric amp. I learned to play on this guitar and always practice acoustically. The tone is amazing on this guitar and it would sound great through an amplifier. Right now, I just hear everything through the circular soundhole.

Any advice or information would help. If you can tell me a particular part name or brand. Thanks so much!

Answer
Either a magnetic soundhole pickup like the one Mikey linked to, or a cheap stick-on transducer like this: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Pickups:_Guitar,_acoustic/Schatten_Soundboard_Transducer.html
You could just let the jack hang if you didn't want to permanently mod the guitar. Maybe put the transducer inside the guitar if you're not certain about whether the adhesive might leave a mark.

Instructions can also be found on the web for making your own transducer - I remember doing it many years ago using the piezo element from a Radio Shack doorbell buzzer. ;) Didn't sound like much but it was cheap!

Who makes the best acoustic guitars?

Devin

I have a guitar right now but its kinda a piece of junk. Picked it up at a thrift store for 30 bucks, I dont even know who makes it.

So what brand makes the best acoustic guitars? I dont mean the best in the whole world, just really really good. Something that sounds really nice and beautiful.

Answer
What you have cannot really be called a guitar. ;) Below $100 new you'll find mainly junk or toys for kids, and a used guitar runs about half the price of a new one.

There are lots of good high-end brands ($1000 and up). Martin and Taylor are well known, and there are also many boutique and custom builders. Companies that are good in one price range are not necessarily good in another, so answering your question won't really help you.

If you want something better than your $30 guitar, but want to stay within an entry level price range (about $150-300), I would suggest the Yamaha FG-700S for $200. It's a great guitar for the money and has a solid spruce top, something ordinarily found on more expensive instruments.

What is the best beginner acoustic guitar?

questionma

I am planning on starting guitar lessons. Obviously an acoustic is the right way to go in the beginning, so I'm wondering if anyone can give me suggestions as to what guitar I should pick up. I heard the Seagull S6 is a good choice for a reasonable price.

Can someone suggest an acoustic guitar that is under 500 dollars with a good rich sound?

Ideally, the guitar could be found in the bay area (california, like san francisco) :)

Thanks!

Answer
the best bet is any ibanez product. I personally prefer Fender products, but they can prove to be expensive(300-400).Ibanez puts out good starter instruments with good features and are affordable to start .A entry level acoustic or electric could run 200-300 dollars.
Then when you get your skill up, ditch it and buy a Fender. They tend to have a resale value.

So I want to learn to play acoustic guitar, and then one day learn to play an electric guitar. How much would the average acoustic guitar cost? Can you please also add some links for good acoustic guitars for beginners? :)

Answer
Do not buy any guitars sold at big box stores. The price may be attractive, but these are just toys that look like guitars. Don't be fooled by the guitars target sells that have the Gibson name on them. The maestro series is total junk and I don't know how Gibson ever licensed their name to this worthless junk.

Musician's Friend and Guitar Center sell the Epiphone DR-100 for between $99 and $129. This is the only guitar in that low of a price range that I would recommend. They are perfect for beginners and will make a great couch guitar when you advance and want something better.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-DR-100-Acoustic-Guitar-101558153-i1150079.gc

To get a better guitar you're looking at $299 and up, but don't need to have huge price tags.
Taylor is probably the best acoustic you can buy without having it custom made, but not everyone has $3000 to blow on a guitar. My favorite 6 string acoustic ever can be had for $399. While it is designed to be a jazz/swing guitar, I find it rocks for all genres.

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gitane-Cigano-Series-GJ10-Gypsy-Jazz-Guitar?sku=580375

Takemine and Ibanez have some decent student guitars at lower prices. you might want to look at those as well. Just search those names on musician's friend for more info.

What are the best acoustic guitars for beginners?

I'm going to be taking a class in college next semester to learn to play guitar. It requires that we get an acoustic guitar. I know nothing about guitars so it would be great if anyone could suggest certain ones to look into or certain types of wood/strings/whatever that would be best for me. I also don't have a huge budget so cheaper guitars that are still good quality would be prefered.
Thanks. :]

I'm a beginner acoustic guitar player and I'm struggling with my counting. How did you learn to count beats and what is the easiest way to learn this?
Robert D - I can't really tap my foot since I sit on a stool...and I dont want to resort to a chair because I will slouch forward.

Answer
You need to learn the difference between a quarter note, eighth note and sixteenth note. How they are counted and how they apply to the music you are playing. So take a basic 4/4 song. Back in Black by AC/DC is a good example. Listen to when the snare drum is being played. It is being played on 2 and 4. So start counting in your head (1 2 3 4) in time with the music so that the 2 and 4 are in time with the snare. So, you just learned to count and understand quarter notes. Now count the same way but add an extra beat in between each quarter note. This is an eighth note and is counted (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and). Of course the down beat (snare drum) should still coincide with the 2 and 4. So basically when going from a quarter note to an eighth you are doubling the notes played/counted. If we look at sixteenth notes it is the same thing, you double the amount of notes played compared to an eighth note. So now you are counting 16 notes per measure instead of 8. Sixteenth notes are counted (1 e and ah 2 e and ah 3 e and ah 4 e and ah). It's very basic math when you get to the root of it.

What are the best steps to becoming a good acoustic guitar player?

Nathan O'h

I dont have money, but i do have a good acoustic guitar, tab book, and a tuner. I would really like to become a good guitar player. Is there any advise on how to achieve this goal. Also i really enjoy it so far, but i dont feel like i am that good. Plz help :)

Answer
Practice a lot. It doesn't have to be everyday. If something is really hard, don't give up and persevere. Eventually, you'll master it. Also, don't overdo it. The mind works better when it's relaxed. So, practice for one hour and then rest. Then after a while, start practicing again. It's all about knowing what your limitations are and knowing that you WILL get better. Don't think that you suck and should just give up.

What are the screws on the bridge of my acoustic guitar for?

Adam

i have an acoustic guitar by Gibson it is kind of a cheapy but not that bad. i am a beginner and know nothing about guitars. on the bridge of the guitar below where the bridge pins go there are two screws one on the left and one on the right. there used to be a little rubber cover thing above both of these screws but they came off. the right screw on the bridge has come loose. i am wondering if this will affect anything, and what are these screws even for. if you could help me out that would be great. the bridge is glued so its not like the screws are whats holding it on. also if the loose screw is affecting something how do i tighten it?

thx in advance

Answer
Hmm. If the screws are indeed below the bridge pins, they're not for adjusting the saddle height as some have suggested. Height adjustment screws are big knurled things at either end of the saddle, and I don't recall any Gibson acoustic models with them anyway. You do see them on some entry level acoustics though. The saddle sits in a metal carrier with the height adjustment knobs at the ends, and the whole carrier sits in an oversize slot in the bridge. You screw the knobs IN to raise the saddle. But as I said, those knobs are in a different location from yours, and they are big - usually about 3/8" diameter, with knurled edges and a slot for a coin or big screwdriver.

Screws to help hold the bridge on, with or without glue, are usually the sign of a very cheap guitar. Are you SURE this a Gibson? People sometimes talk about "Gibson Epiphones" and "Gibson Maestros", but these are misnomers. I have seen pictures of a Gibson model from 40 years or so ago with a plastic bridge held on with screws, but AFAIK they thought better of it rather quickly.

I sure wouldn't call any real Gibson a cheapie, either. They're pretty much all over $1000 new. I've seen cheap imported guitars with clumsily forged Gibson or Martin logos on the headstock, though.

Anyway, if the screw is helping hold the bridge on, there should be a nut on the inside that you can tighten. You can get at it by loosening the strings and working through the soundhole.

Piezo dots (pickups) are also sometimes installed in that location but I don't think you would be confusing one with a screw once the decorative plug had fallen out.

What acoustic guitar would be recommendable for a beginner?

Roland

I have no music background and i am looking to change that and i am extremely dedicated to learning to play the acoustic guitar. Are there any good packages under $400? I would prefer Gibson or Taylor but i know they are too good to be such a low price...I Live in Ohio and i know they don't have any Gibson or Taylor stores near my town. Any brand will work. Thanks!

Answer
I usually recommend the Yamaha FS-720S to beginners. It's got a solid wood top, a comfortable shape, and a nice balanced tone all of which are important advantages.

In my opinion Gibson makes fairly ordinary and greatly overpriced acoustic guitars. I do like Taylors.

To my knowledge the pre-amps that come on most acoustic guitars would not have distortion. Stick to stomp boxes, or amps for your distortion.

What is the device called that is used to plug a regular acoustic guitar into an amplifier?

Nick

Hey, i've noticed a few of my favorite musicians that play acoustic guitar live are able to amplify their REGULAR acoustic guitars by plugging a little device into the amp. The little device slides under the strings over the tone hole on the body of the guitar
what is it called??????

Answer
It's called a "pickup"

It's the same idea as an electric guitar, except for acoustic guitars. They are not very expensive, but depending on what kind you get you may want to pay someone to install it.

Here's a site, or you can just google "acoustic guitar pickups"

Someone else had a similar question a few months back regarding a mellow acoustic guitar song in this soundtrack that a variety of people have been looking for.
http://www.cheechandchongfans.com/mess/read.php?5,2359,2359#2359
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Classic-Rock-3258/nice-dreams-soundtrack.htm
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082163/board/flat/22606397?p=1

First off, it ***IS NOT*** 'Nice Dreams' or 'Save the Whales' as noted in this limited soundtrack listing -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082163/soundtrack -- which are both sung by Cheech. Two separate Yahoo! Answers individuals (either by ignorance or malice), said otherwise previously without any VERIFIABLE proof. The above link doesn't prove this. 'Nice Dreams' was heard at the beginning of the movie, and 'Save the Whales' was a Cheech and Chong duet performed at the ice cream truck.

I couldn't find an answer -- unless you want to believe this one --
http://www.cheechandchongfans.com/mess/read.php?3,776,947#776

I'm assuming this is the scene -- http://goo.gl/E8H7y

There were several people involved with the soundtrack:

Harry Betts
Rubén Guevara
Gaye Delorme
Cheech Marin & Thomas Chong

I contacted Gaye Delorme. He claims he didn't do the lo-key acoustic guitar song I was looking for, but you might be able to contact him here with your song question --
http://www.gayedelorme.com/

Or Rubén Guevara
http://www.rubenfunkahuatlguevara.net/

Harry Betts may be in his late 80s at this point --
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Betts

Or possibly Cliff Kohlweck, who was music editor --
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082163/fullcredits#music_department

Good luck finding any contact information for Harry Betts or Cliff Kohlweck. Who knows if they would remember this after some 30 years.

What guitar songs do girls like?

Alex

I'm a boy guitar player ( both Acoustic and electric ) in middle school. I have played the instrument for about 3 years and I have my heart into it. I was wondering what type of songs girls like to see boys play on the guitar. I'm not talking about rap or Britney Spears but more like the 70s and 80s stuff like van halen, led zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix ext.

Answer
Hey Alex, how's it going? Girls don't exactly like to see guys play those kind of songs on the guitar honestly. They like stuff that's more relaxing and laid-back and love songs. Jack Johnson is a real good artist that will interest girls. Jason Mraz too and any other acoustic/alternative artists like that. If you play Van Halen, Led Zepplein, Jimi Hendrix, it isn't going to do much for a girl. Sure you can rip some rifts and jam with that kind of music, but you mostly impress guys with that. To girls, it usually just sounds too complicated and distorted. Go with the simple mellow songs like above and you'll see what I mean. Best of luck. :)

Q. My guitar is a Harmony Acoustic and it's 34.5" full body.

1)Here's the deal I need a tuning cap at the top so how much do you think it would it cost? The thing snapped off entirely.

2)I need new strings and I want a more acoustic rock/alternative sound (think 'Hey There Delilah' Plain White T's) So is it steel or nylon? How much would that cost?

And no I don't want a new guitar, if I could afford it I would have bought one by now.
I mean tuning peg in the first one.

Answer
Tuning cap? do you mean "key"? You'll probably have to get a set - the cheap ones are around 10- 12 bucks - good ones can be up to 50. If the guitar is a "steel string" you'll have to stick with those. Get a set of "Phosphor Bronze" med.lights (12s) - D'Adarrio or Martins or GHS, unless it has nylon strings on it.

any good ideas how to age a guitar about 50 years within a few days?

jesse t

I have a new guitar and i I want to make it a bit weathered, not necessarily using a belt sander, but how do i get the relic look from a new guitar without going over the top?

Crazy polishing? Fine grade sandpaper on the back of the neck?

Any ideas?

Answer
I'd like to see a picture to get a better idea of what you are starting with? How good of a job do you want to do? You can just scruff it up with some steel wool. Maybe add a few scratches and a ding or two. Take some Old English "scratch hider" (the dark oil) or oil stain and wipe it into the grain, dings and scratches. They will absorb the dark stain and age it.
If you really wanted to make it look vintage get a bottle of Formby's varnish remover and take the varnish off down to the wood...then do what I said. Just wipe it down with Tung oil when you're done.
Pull the strings and "age" or replace the label inside the body. (If it's an acoustic) You can get vintage labels off ebay for a few bucks...even for the head. Replace the plastic tuning keys with some bone, ebony or even ivory keys. Plastic sticks out like a sore thumb. Replace the plastic bridge with Ivory (synthetic) it looks better, sounds better and can increase the action andor lighten the frets. A real or faux tortoise shell pick guard looks cool and vintage. You can get most of this stuff off ebay for pretty cheap and do it a piece at a time.
Just thought I'd throw some ideas at you. Choose which ones you like.
Me?...I just play the hell out of mine and it's showing it's age more everyday...haha
I've got several but my old Hummingbird acoustic (with gut/nylon strings) gets played the most.
Damn my fingers are sore right now. I don't guess that ever goes away.
I played about 10 hours yesterday and probably 6 today. I try to practice at least 2-3 hours everyday.
Good luck

How do I practice guitar at my level?

q

I'd say I'm beginner - intermediate (playing 6 years). I would love to be able to "shred" soon, and I'm almost there. I don't know whether I should focus on practicing finger exercises or playing along with difficult melodic tunes.

6 years seems like a long time... how good should I be? I practice every day....

Answer
Learn theory before anything else. Learn as many scales and their application, because thats all "shredding" is. I recommend you listen to various styles of music and try to learn licks and solo by ear and analyze then with the chord changes. The perfect thing to look at is jazz. Jazz music comes with a written melody and the chord progression above it. The chord are hints to what notes are acceptable for the duration of that chord. Jazz is hard than rock, and many rock techniques derive from jazz. You think I lying try to play Afternoon in Paris, which is quite easy. If you breezed through that try Scrapple From The Apple, then go for the big boy stuff like Donna Lee which is no joke.

Transcribing solos of all styles (progressive rock, jazz, latin, acoustic, etc) will make you so much more of a player. It helps you understand the uses of note only melodic solos but adding a rhythmic edge to the thing you play, but this can only come by 1: understanding what the heck ur playin 2: getting new ideas from listening to others and 3: application.

You should be learning all the painstaking rudiments, common jazz progressions (these are much much harder to play than a simple rock song, making your music much more "musical" and intelligent), while playing hard song (writing some out. the best players I know transcribe really hard songs like Dance of Eternity by Dream Theater. That kid actually got into Berklee the School of Music on a 75% scholarship. Another was asked by Hulk Hogan's daughter for guitar lessons, and he said she has to called him 1st, he doesnt ask ppl if they need something from him, which is pretty baddass)

Here's a nice little pdf called the Real Book which is full of jazz standards. Afternoon in Paris is on page 12, Donne Lee pg123, and Scrapple on pg351. Hope you can read standard notation, if not learn. Reading tabs will only get you so far, plus theory isnt written in tabs. The rule for practicing for college musicians (which I happened to be as well) 6hrs a day for preforming majors (me) and 4 for teaching majors. During this time you should be playing warm ups (scales and etdues) then wateva new theory concpet you are applying, and the song for the day (whether you are writing one or learning one). The sca;e part takes me about 45 mins but I halfass too often. If I went ahead a learned all my scales in all 12 keys (all 7 modes, plus variations for modes, diminished types, augmented, whole tone, the 4 pentatonic types, etc I'd be there much much longer. this is something im working myself into day by day)

Where can I get good acoustic guitar sheet music for Simple and Clean by Utada Hikaru?

I want to sing simple and clean to acoustic guitar in the talent show next year at my school but I need the sheet music and I want the guy I'm gonna ask to play it, to play it like the guy does when Utada sings it live to acoustic guitar in her video anyone know where I can find good sheet music exactly like that?

Answer
An easy, and cheap, way to learn a song is to look up the chords (or tabs, if you can read them) online.

Here's a link to the Simple and Clean chords on ultimate-guitar. It's got the highest rating on the website

http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/h/hikaru_utada/simple_and_clean_ver4_crd.htm

That will show him what chords he should play and when. If you need him to know how to strum it correctly, then have him listen to the song a few times and if he's good enough he should be able to pick out the strumming pattern.

What is the strip that lays over the sound hole of a acoustic guitar?

ChemE-Kaun

I watch some videos and some acoustic guitars have a thin strip of wood (i imagine) that lays across the sound hole. What is it called and what does it do?

Answer
I think what you're seeing is a sound pickup to plug the guitar into an amp. They make these to retrofit to acoustic guitars so they can plug them in and get a better, more consistent sound than they could get by just putting a microphone in front of the guitar.

How much would a decent acoustic guitar cost?

best acoustic guitars to learn on image

Bella C

I am a beginner and I have been wanting to start playing for a long time. I'm looking for a nice acoustic guitar to learn with. I am saving up money to buy one but I want to know which kind would be best. I'd also like to know the price of a good acoustic. The brand would be very much appreciated. And some tips or anything like that would be great! Thank you so much!!

Love,
Isabelle :)

Answer
A decent beginners' acoustic guitar is around $200. I especially like the Yamaha FS-720S which is slightly higher. Whatever you decide to buy, go to a music store and nowhere else. Not the internet and not a big box store like Walmart or Best Buy. Only buy a guitar at a guitar store.

Good luck. and don't forget to get lessons.

I'm planning to learn how to play the acoustic guitar and need some tips?

Josh

Right now i'm planning on buying an acoustic guitar and learning how to play by myself, i know NOTHING AT ALL about how to play any sort of instrument, if my life depended on it for sure I would die. So I am a pure amateur, is there a book that can help someone that knows 0% on how to play an acoustic guitar? I'm thinking of buying a dummies book because it has good reviews but I don't know if it could help.

Answer
alot of people i see here post things such as ''i taught myself piano its easy''
let me say any instrument is easy (&these are most likely the ramblings of people who have only played guitar a few months), but to properly play it & understand what the heck your doing (this helps your creative process when writing your own stuff or just in general) is another different matter.
i could be taught to recite out 10 basic piano tunes, but give me the likes of Mozarts music & ask me to use certain techniques that are heard on piano. i would fail (as would all the people claiming ''its easy'' on their respective instruments)

the problem with teaching yourself guitar (or any instrument) is that alot of people give up they get frustrated. (supposedly 90% of self taught musicians quit)
also alot of people can ''play'' guitar, ie bang out a few songs & intros eg starirway to heaven. But there is a notable difference heard between a self-taught guitarist playing a song & a trained guitarist.
guitarists are a dime a dozen, everybody plays guitar (heck i play guitar) however a decent guitarist is hard to find this is where you can benifit from lessons as most people don't take lessons.

Lessons are definitely a great idea, a teacher can show you techniques & correct you. i still get corrected over things i do at my lessons.
alot of the internet resources aren't that great, again it is alot of amateurs with bad technique posting who started out similar to you, or looking to make a quick buck.

every music autobiography i have read (& i read quite a fair bit of them as i LOVE music) the guitarist/any instrument, has gotten lessons at some point.
there are a rare few virtuoso (ie talented) people who didn't get lessons but even at that they start practicing with other people who have got lessons & learn off them.
As somebody said those ''guitar for dummies'' are great, however that is as a side tool to reference to. not to just teach yourself, at a glance you learn the basics but when you study those books they can get quite complicated & a teacher can clear any questions you have.
a teacher also encourages you to practice & gives you set goals.
Don't get me wrong you can learn by yourself but if you are in any way serious about wanting to play music & want to get to a good level, i'd DEFINITELY suggest lessons. Also alot of people seem to start their music career out on guitar as it is such a famous instrument & lots of people own guitars in some form. Don't be suprised if you feel like quitting guitar because everybody plays it after a few months it happens to alot of people, it doesn't mean you aren't musically talented.

PS try not to ask people to give you the chords to a song, its better if you can work them out yourself it creates an ear for certain notes. however make sure what you are playing is correct.
PPS: i read here an answer off somebody who was in a music college, she roughly said ''the teachers would cringe when they heard that a new 'self-taught' musician was coming to the colllege, because the teachers all knew he/she would have to be retaught due to them having bad technique''

Rory Gallagher- Walk On Hot Coals (ROCK, the 5 minute solo isn't as good as the ''irish tour'' solo, but jesus christ this rules & it highlights the bands chemistry)

''Rory's death really upset me. I heard about it just before we went on stage, and it put a damper on the evening'' Jimmy Page (Led Zep)

What do I need in order to tune an acoustic guitar?

how to tune acoustic guitar for beginners without tuner
on 90001 Intellitouch PT1 Universal Electronic Tuner
how to tune acoustic guitar for beginners without tuner image

Ashley

Also, can anyone refer me to any good books/websites for begginers' lessons?

Answer
It's best to start by tuning the 6th string to the pitch of "E" with some type of tuner like a tuning fork, pitch pipes, piano or an electronic tuner. The "low E" string is another name for the 6th string. Once you've got that done, you press you index finger of left hand on the low E string between the 4th and 5th frets without touching any other strings, pick that string and hold the note. While allowing that note to play pick the open 5th string and let that note hold also. While both notes are being allowed to be heard adjust the tension of the 5th string until the pitches of both strings match exactly. You may have to do this a number of times until the desired pitch is attained.
Once you have the 6th and 5th string tuned repeat the process with the 5th & 4th string, then with the 4th & 3rd String.

Now the tuning process changes alittle when you get to the 3rd & 2nd strings. The only difference is you need to press between the " 3rd and 4th" frets of the 3rd string, then pick the 3rd & the opened 2nd string to tune. Then for the 2nd & 1st string the process goes back to the 5th fret 2nd string & open 1st string.

Now if you have an electronic tuner your tune each string to match these pitches:

6th string = E

5th string = A

4th string = D

3rd string = G

2nd string = B

1st string = E

Regarding books and lessons and to be entirely honest, I would spend less and not more on a books and lessons in the beginning.

I know it sounds silly but I would really recommend the Guitar Book for Dummies. It has a lot of good beginner guitar information and best of all you can pick up a used copy for around 5 bucks or less on Amazon.

Hope this helps......

Hi there, I am planning my valentine's present for my husband! He is into guitars and used to play when he was younger, he is not an expert obviously but I know I would make him very happy by giving him an acoustic guitar as a present for Valentine's. Now the problem is that I don't know anything about guitars!!! I don't want to buy an expensive one because it's just for fun, I've been checking online and I've seen some nice ones, but I am not sure! Any advice will be appreciated! :)

Answer
Well, i like the idea of giving him something like this. I think you should just buy whatever you can get ahold of. He'll understand if you spend too much.

Which Guitar to buy Electric or Acoustic?

i want to buy a guitar.i am very new to guitar. but don't know difference between both. i mean, is it electic can't produce sound like acoustic guitar and vice versa??
also tell me which acoustic/electric should i buy. give image if possible.

Answer
Okay, there's a lot to consider. Firstly, what kind of music do you want to play? How old are you? What is your budget? Do you wanna learn lead or rhythm?

What kind of music - this is important because if you're into RAWK, you'll want to feel amped. You can stick a pick up on an acoustic, plug in and make some howlin' noise (this is a bit of an indie thing...Black Francis from the Pixies uses an acoustic on a lot of songs and Pixies rock like mad). But if you're a fan of metal or any of that stuff, you'll want an electric. You CAN learn the basics on an electric.

How old are you? I ask because if you're a young'un, a huge guitar is going to be harder to learn. The key here is to buy something you'll stick with and not have as a dusty relic in the corner of your bedroom.

Budget - obviously, like most things, there's a biiiiig price range to consider. Luckily though, these days you can get all manner of really practical and handy guitars for good prices. But you can spend up to thousands.

Rhythm or lead - this is more if you get an acoustic. If you want to learn to play lead, I'd recommend getting a guitar with a 'cutaway', which bascially means a section of the body of the guitar is removed to allow you better access to higher notes. You also need to know whether you want a steel or nylon string. Nylon stringed (or 'nun', as I call 'em) guitars have a beautiful sweet sound, but they are usually used for jazz or classical music and the fretboard is generally very wide.

Here are a few tips for beginners...that first few months of playing is critical. You WILL sound like poop for a while. If you've never really played and you look at people who CAN play and wonder why it looks so easy for them to make music while you feel like you're busting your fingers trying to get a clean note or chord, don't worry. The more you do it, the stronger your fingers get, the tougher your fingertips get...if you're practising and you get so frustrated you think you're gonna burst, cool down for a bit, then get back into it.

Use light gauge strings to start. They're a little easier to push down onto the fretboard. Once you're callused up, you can go heavier gauge if you want.

Get a guitar with a reasonably low action. A guitar shop can help you with this. This means the strings are a little closer to the fretboard and again, not so hard to press down to make a note or chord. (One of the big mistakes I made when buying one of my first guitars - a black Gibson Explorer COPY from hell) was that the strings were about 3 miles up the road from the fretboard and I really hurt myself trying to play).

Okay...here's a list with links of a bunch of guitars:

Maton acoustic/electric with cutaway (great guitar): http://www.artiesmusic.com.au/images/products/acoustics/maton/EST65C_large.jpg

The classic Gibson Les Paul: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop_image/product/36d02c4b22c1fb53592f5017353605b3.jpg

The Fender Stratocaster, probably the most famous shape for an electric guitar :http://www.stratcollector.com/images/namm/cs50th.gif

The Gibson SG (made famous by AC/DC's Angus Young): http://www.zikinf.com/_gfx/matos/dyn/large/gibson-sg-standard.jpg

Old school beauty...a Gretsch: http://www.planktones.com/Gretsch.jpg

A lovely Rickenbacker (John Lennon's): http://www.miniguitars.com/acatalog/lennon_rickenbacker_325_black_fs.jpg

All of these are just shapes...unless you've got some $$$ they'll sting you. But you can get really good copies for a fraction of the price. Good luck!

Does anyone know of a good acoustic guitar teacher in Newcastle upon Tyne?

nineteense

Really want to get back into playing. Also interested in joining a beginners guitar group. Any help would be good.

Answer
I don't, but your best bet would be to look at the local ads.

Try gumtree.co.uk, loot.com or the classified ads in your local paper. Also try looking at the noticeboards in your local supermarkets, or ask people you know if they can recommend someone.

There are a lot of websites around- try googling it. I did a quick google and came up with these pages:
http://tutors.guitartab.co.uk/northengland/
http://guitarlessonsnewcastle.com/
http://newcastle.gumtree.com.au/f-guitar-Community-W0QQCatIdZ9300QQKeywordZguitar
http://www.musicteachers.co.uk/browse/ne/newcastle-upon-tyne/teachers/
http://www.yell.com/s/music+teachers-newcastle+upon+tyne.html

Also, you could try reposting in travel-> UK -> Newcastle and ask other Geordies.

Epiphone Les Paul Ultra III?

I'm thinking of buying a vintage sunburst model for my husband as a surprise present. I've read that it only weighs about as much a strat? He absolutely hates stratocasters, do they feel anything like a strat? And also I don't want to give him something that will be out dated in a year like the apple products. What else could they do to the guitar that hasn't been done? I mean it has a built it tuner, usb, mono and stereo output, and the manomag acoustic pickup. What else can be done?

Answer
First off, buying your husband a guitar is just awesome, there should be more wives like you. Guitars don't really get outdated. Anyone would rather have a 1959 Les Paul than a 2012 Les Paul. The Ultra uses a chambered body rather than a solid body which is why it is lighter. If anything the Ultra has too much technology rather than not enough. Some folks like that and some don't. If this is a guitar your husband has shown an interest in then you should be fine. It won't feel or sound anything like a Strat.

I have an acoustic guitar and I want to find a beginner lesson(s) online free. My plan is to find a teacher after learning very basic things.

This one looks pretty good.

I think its a good idea to take lessons from a real person to make sure you get a solid foundation.
Some basic things you'll want to learn are:
Names of the strings
"Open" Chords
Notes of the frets (at least the first 5 frets)

Learn these things and you'll be well on your way. Have Fun!
