top 10 cheap acoustic guitars image
Q. My guitar is a Harmony Acoustic and it's 34.5" full body.
1)Here's the deal I need a tuning cap at the top so how much do you think it would it cost? The thing snapped off entirely.
2)I need new strings and I want a more acoustic rock/alternative sound (think 'Hey There Delilah' Plain White T's) So is it steel or nylon? How much would that cost?
And no I don't want a new guitar, if I could afford it I would have bought one by now.
I mean tuning peg in the first one.

Answer
Tuning cap? do you mean "key"? You'll probably have to get a set - the cheap ones are around 10- 12 bucks - good ones can be up to 50. If the guitar is a "steel string" you'll have to stick with those. Get a set of "Phosphor Bronze" med.lights (12s) - D'Adarrio or Martins or GHS, unless it has nylon strings on it.

I have a new guitar and i I want to make it a bit weathered, not necessarily using a belt sander, but how do i get the relic look from a new guitar without going over the top?
Crazy polishing? Fine grade sandpaper on the back of the neck?
Any ideas?

I'd like to see a picture to get a better idea of what you are starting with? How good of a job do you want to do? You can just scruff it up with some steel wool. Maybe add a few scratches and a ding or two. Take some Old English "scratch hider" (the dark oil) or oil stain and wipe it into the grain, dings and scratches. They will absorb the dark stain and age it.
If you really wanted to make it look vintage get a bottle of Formby's varnish remover and take the varnish off down to the wood...then do what I said. Just wipe it down with Tung oil when you're done.
Pull the strings and "age" or replace the label inside the body. (If it's an acoustic) You can get vintage labels off ebay for a few bucks...even for the head. Replace the plastic tuning keys with some bone, ebony or even ivory keys. Plastic sticks out like a sore thumb. Replace the plastic bridge with Ivory (synthetic) it looks better, sounds better and can increase the action andor lighten the frets. A real or faux tortoise shell pick guard looks cool and vintage. You can get most of this stuff off ebay for pretty cheap and do it a piece at a time.
Just thought I'd throw some ideas at you. Choose which ones you like.
Me?...I just play the hell out of mine and it's showing it's age more everyday...haha
I've got several but my old Hummingbird acoustic (with gut/nylon strings) gets played the most.
Damn my fingers are sore right now. I don't guess that ever goes away.
I played about 10 hours yesterday and probably 6 today. I try to practice at least 2-3 hours everyday.
Good luck
