Acoustic guitars.........?

I really want an acoustic guitar and I found one on craiglist. I just don't know if it's good quality or not. I can't attatch the link right now, but the brand was Huntington and the person was only asking for $70...
I have to buy it myself (I'm 15) and this is perfect for my budget...

Answer
DO NOT BUY A GUITAR U HAVENT PLAYED B4! Test the guitar 1st. I've never heard of Huntington, it might be a beginner guitar in which isnt all that great of a guitar. Also guitars that are marketed as beginner guitars are those w/ poor quality and cheaply made. Personally i hate that cheap-@ss Epiphone guitar pack. It has horrible action and the sound projection is bad.

note: cheap guitars=cheaper quality=bad sound and playability, ultimately u get what u pay for, that simple

I suggest you raise your price range, and look to buy a Yamaha Acoustic Gigmaker Pack which is around $160 this is a perfect starter set w/ everything u need and some, plus the guitar isnt bad at all, which is the better buy

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Yamaha-GigMaker-Acoustic-Guitar-Pack-102920113-i1150348.gc

OR

The Fender DG-8S Acoustic Guitar Value Pack which is $199

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-DG-8S-Acoustic-Guitar-Value-Pack-104506415-i1146547.gc

Fender also offers a Squier pack for acoustic, i think but double check though. I dont like it becuase it feel cheap and the sound is...eh

OR

Ibanez IJV50 JamPack Quick Start $99 (the quality on this on is iffy)

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-IJV50-JamPack-Quick-Start-103563631-i1150606.gc

If u dont buy a starter kit stick w/ these brands plus the ones above:
Alvarez, Washburn, Regal, Seagull, and Rogue.

After the guitar all u'll need afterward is a TUNER, a crap-load of PICKS (you'll lose alotta of them), and some BOOK and DVD (extra, but helpful to have a visual aide). The book should have basic music theory, scales, and chords (these are the 3 main pt u need to start getting good at guitar)

note: its better to buy a acoustic (non-acoustic electric), because the pre-amp on the guitar is tied into its price, so if its really cheap, then the quality is super bad. Again I recommend the Yamaha pack, but their are other more expensive packs that have better guitars, but the Yamaha should suffice until u buy a better one later on.

An Acoustic Guitar for a beginner? Tips?

Nyan R

Hey everyone.

I'm planning on getting an Acoustic Guitar here soon. After listening to the type of music and musicians over the years, I really want to get one.

My question for you all is, what is a good guitar for a beginner. After a quick google search, I found someone say a Seagull S6 is a good beginners guitar. But I have no real knowledge on the subject and would like some input from you all. So any suggestions are welcomed and my price range would be $400 and below, maybe even a bit above.

All suggestions welcomed and thanks in advance!

Answer
A good acoustic guitar for beginners?

It's a good thing you've already decided on your budget, so what you should do is look at all the guitars in your price range. Now here comes the difficult part: You're going to have to try them. I know you probably can't play yet, but it's still important you hear and test them. Do NOT get the first instrument you see that you can afford, or the nicest looking one, too many people make that mistake.

First, have someone play it for you, and see if you like the sound it produces. Also, strum the strings yourself, and see if you like it. Pluck individual notes and take notice of how long the note holds. It's generally a rule that better guitars have better sustain, meaning that the note will ring longer. Next, hold down the strings. Notice how hard you have to push to get them down. A better guitar shouldn't hurt you too much. If it feels like it'll bust your fingers if you hold on for longer than a few seconds, it's probably not the ideal choice.

Next, wrap your hand around the neck, with your thumb under, and your other four fingers on strings within reach. Does it feel too thick? Too thin? Only you can decide, because it's personal preference. Also, check the tuning pegs, turn them and the should offer some resistance, but not too much. Finally, check for overall construction, make sure it's all in good shape.

Do this, and decide on what is best. Try not to look at the brand names, because honestly, at entry level they're usually all made in China and of similar materials, and sometimes even in the same factory. So, get the one that sounds and feels best regardless of brand.

However, just to give you an idea of what is worth looking out for, the following brands are popular amongst beginners and are generally good value. Don't be afraid to try something else though, remember, it's whatever feels and sounds best.

- Takamine
- Yamaha
- Ibanez
- Seagull
There are others of course, just as there are brands to avoid, so I'd suggest testing them out. Oh, and in my opinion, cheap Fender guitars suck. So avoid them like the plague.

Good luck, hope this helped and have fun! =)

Best Blues Guitar For Beginner?

Tippy

Wondering if anyone could advise me on what guitar to buy for a beginner learning blues. Acoustic, Electric... The make, model... Im really stuck. Many Thanks

Answer
There all good guitars for the Blues. You can play Blues on any guitar.

Here is a list of the most common guitars used.
1. Fender Telecaster
2. Fender Stratacaster
3. Gibson ES-335
4. Gibson Les Paul
5. Acoustic guitars

The electric guitars are easier to play and you can get a lot of tones when playing. I like playing Blues on my Acoustic the best. Personal choice. If I want to electrify then I have a ES-335 knockoff that has that B.B. King sound.
As a beginner I would look into the cheaper knock offs(imported) guitars before I'd drop a grand of two on the real thing.
I personally only play with friends and around the house for my own entertainment. So I have an Ibanez copy of the Gibson Dove that Elvis used and a copy of the Gibson ES-335 that B.B. King used.

what is the thinnest, left handed thin-line acoustic guitar on the market?

Tim K

I have cerebral palsy which limits my range of motion, but currently can play a left handed epiphone dot, I really want to start playing an acoustic guitar but have only been able to find full body acoustics that are lefty. so what is the thinnest acoustic guitar that I can get for left handed play?

Answer
It may not be the thickness of the guitar that's the biggest problem. Have you tried some of the orchestra/auditorium models which have a smaller body than a dreadnought? If money isn't a concern I was recently looking at BlackBird guitars because I saw an ad for them in a magazine. They are carbon fiber and weigh about 3 pounds. They have a few different models, but their biggest is still just an orchestra size. They're about $2000 though, so I stopped looking at them! But there are a lot of "travel" acoustic guitars out there like the Martin Backpacker. They don't sound as nice as a full size guitar, but are certainly playable and small. Yamaha APX guitars are pretty thin too and Yamaha makes good guitars for the money if you're on a tighter budget. The best thing to do is get out to a music store and try a bunch out if you can. Even if they don't stock left handed models you can just flip a righty over to see how it feels and then order a left-handed one if you find something you like. Good luck.

I found a really exquisite guitar barely within my price range, but there is no pickup...?

epitome of

It's a Michael Kelly Trio Rose. It sounds beautiful, and he agrees, but one of the things my dad thinks is really important for my guitar is to have a pickup for gigging. What should I do?

Answer
This is an acoustic guitar, yes?

There are numerous after-market pick-ups available for installation in those acoustic guitars which lack one. Some of them just sit in the soundhole and require no special knowledge or tools to put in. Others require the skill and patience of an experienced guitar tech...and there's the question of how much one wants to spend, to install a first-class pick-up into what might be only a mediocre guitar...

and many of the newer guitars, which come with one built in, also have valuable tone-shaping tools on-board which can make a HUGE difference when the guitar starts to feed back...as acoustic guitars tend to do under certain conditions...it might be worth your while to consider this and go with a guitar which is already set up for the long run.

but Sunrise, Barcus-Berry, Fishman...they and many others make such pick-ups...see MUSICIAN's FRIEND.com for some ideas. Go to HARMONY CENTRAL.com and search the owner's reviews, by manufacturer, for the pick-ups in which you may be interested...does an artist whose work you admire, and whose tunes you might play, use a particular brand?...could be a good starting point...will you be going solo?..or is there some possibility that you'll be more in a group thing, maybe competing with a keyboard or drums?

but THEN you need an amp...where will you be gigging?...the bedroom, or small clubs?...the garage or good sized halls?...the local poetry jam?

Some folks just put a microphone in front of the guitar and let the PA system, assuming the venue has one, carry the weight... that minimizes the amount of gear you have to hump around...if you really start gigging, and you are your own roadie, you'll find out quickly what an advantage this could be...if you're just starting out and DAD has to be the roadie...?...think about it.

MOST IMPORTANT: you like THIS guitar?...it's more than just "cute" and REALLY REALLY sounds great (compared to how many? you'd be surprised how much of a difference there can be between different guitars, even when they're otherwise exactly the same...) and you find it comfortable to play? The price is right? AND you've got a good case for it, yes? Don't scrimp and not get a case...you can't gig without one and the guitar deserves one if you REALLY love it that much

Realize that the vast majority of people who pick up the guitar will lose interest in a matter of weeks...as every guitar teacher (and every parent facing the after-Christmas bills for the guitar-which-sits-unplayed-in-the-corner) will tell you, enthusiasm tends to drop off dramatically when one has to start remembering the names of the strings and how to tune them...and good lessons aren't cheap... ALWAYS practice with a metronome!!!

If your dad has reason to think you're actually going to stick with it, he might be right...maybe you're a poet in the making and putting your thoughts to music is the path with heart...someday, somewhere, it will have to be loud enough to cover a crowd of people who are more interested in their food, or their drinks, or whatever inconsequential blather they think will impress their date...

THAT's when you want the glory of your instrument and the quality of your music to stop 'em in their tracks...the more you put your stuff out there, the more you'll learn.

Want to buy a semi-acoustic guitar?

Sonu

Hi! I am planning to buy an electric-acoustic guitar soon.

I had learned a bit of guitar last year but then just got busy with studies so didn't have time to practice much.

I have done some research but different people have so many different opinions which have made me real confused.

My range is around $300 to $400. The problem is that the area where I live has no guitar shops so I have decided to buy from eBay.

These are the guitars I have seen so far which fit my range and have good reviews:
Yamaha APX 500II Thinline Series and Ibanez Talman TCY10.

I know people say the best guitar is the one which feels good to your own ear but as mentioned earlier, the main problem is that I can't play and check the guitars :(

I plan to play 80% of it unplugged at home and 20% plugged in live.

Can anybody please help me decide of the two I mentioned or any other guitar options which would be better than the ones I mentioned within the price range?

Thanks alot!
Sorry, I meant Acoustic-Electric and not semi-acoustic

Answer
A semi-acoustic guitar is a purely electric guitar. A Gibson ES335 is the obvious example.

first acoustic guitar?

sleepy3191

ive wanted to learn to play the guitar and im just stuck on picking one, i have a budget of about 250-300. i was thinking something between the yamaha, ibanez, and a fender. i know that if the bridge is close then its easier on your fingers and will be easier to learn, also if the neck is not to thick then thatll make it easier, im looking for a guitar to learn on and that will be easy to learn on and play...pretty much the easiest guitar but still a good sounding, quality, nice one. thanks

Answer
I have to cast my vote for Ibanez, since they've got incredibly thin necks and low action (strings really close to the fretboard), which makes them much more comfortable to play than most acoustic guitars. They're also built like rocks, sound great and are often nicer than guitars costing twice as much. Ignore the poster who says Ibanez guitars are only made for playing metal, since that's pure fiction. Ibanez may have a big share of the metal guitar market, but jazz legend Pat Metheny endorses the acoustics and that man could play any brand he chooses!

Lots of people like Yamaha acoustics, but I find the necks a little too chunky (I'm female and have small hands) to play comfortably. And Fenders are easy enough to play, but there's nothing spectacular about them at all. They're basically very mediocre guitars both in looks and tone. I've never known a single guitarist who was impressed with Fender acoustics (though the electrics are great), and the only people who seem to buy them are electric guitarists who think they'll get the same quality as they get with Fender electrics.

I bought my first Ibanez guitar second-hand more than 20 years ago figuring I'd use it to learn and then upgrade to a "better" guitar. Over the years, I did get more guitars, but the cheap old Ibanez is still my primary guitar for both recording and playing live. It plays and sounds as great as it did the day I bought it and it hasn't given me a moment of trouble. And when I decided to get an acoustic-electric a couple years ago, the Ibanez ones proved to be nicer (and easier to play) than most of the prestige brands I tried.

If you can, go to a guitar store and test drive a bunch of different guitars, since each brand tends to have its own feel. Chances are, you'll find that one guitar just feels more comfortable and natural in your hands than others. Trust your instincts, since they're more important than anyone else's opinion. But if you don't live close to a good guitar store, here are some links to guitar worth considering -- with great, playable necks and low action:

Im planning to buy an acoustic Guitar i had Big Baby Taylor and seagull in mind
price range is 200-500 bucks.
any suggestions?

Answer
They're both god, but the best idea is to go to your local music shop, see what's in your price range and try a few. You may come across one you hadn't thought of, or a name you don't know that really does it for you. If you are a beginner, take a knowledgeable friend with you if possible. I've just acquired a Little Martin travel guitar, the LX1E. It had built in electrics, but I've played it acoustically in sessions and it's awesome! It might be small, but the sound is amazing. hope this helps. For performance, I use Ovation electro acoustics, but I don't know what they cost where you are.

Hope this helps.

What are the basic things you should learn about playing guitar?

HaNae

I'm buying an acoustic guitar, and I have no idea whatsoever how to play it! And I don't know anything about music (notes and all that stuff) so yeah I pretty much got nothing!
Where should I start?

Answer
Hi :) I'm a 14-year-old guitar player, and I don't know how old you are, but I've been playing guitar for 4 years and I know where to start out and what to do when you first start playing, so I'm going to try and help you. I know, I'm young, but please trust me in what I tell you. K, first, don't buy a guitar if you don't know how to play it. If you end up not liking guitar, it's a complete waste of money and it's sad to see a guitar go to waste. You should only buy a guitar until you are positive you want to keep playing. Start out with borrowing a guitar from somebody or renting one. And DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT start out with teaching yourself. You need to have a teacher that is there to guide you along the way and help you learn notes and theory. Even if one of your parents plays guitar and you want them to teach you, this is not always the best idea because unless you're going to make a set schedule that you are going to follow for your lesson time with them, because you'll most likely get off track because they're your parents, & you will usually find other things to talk about than guitar. So find a teacher that you know will have one lesson with you every week and will give you plenty of things to practice. In the beginning you need to learn all the parts of the guitar (such as the frets), how to tune it by ear and with a tuner, and beginner's theory. You'll probably start out with simple chords and learning the notes that build up a chord and all the different notes across the fret board. Basically, just think theory in the beginning. Once you become comfortable with that and know the basic beginning stuff, you can start learning songs, which is where it gets really fun. Some good songs to learn that are easy for beginners are songs such as "Leaving On a Jet Plane", "Wonderwall", and pretty much any Beatles song, but may I suggest "All My Loving" or "Here Comes The Sun." You will soon learn all the aspects of guitar and become more advanced, and once you get to be an advanced guitarist you will get to pay less attention to theory and start focusing on finding your own style and developing that. If you want to be a singer/songwriter, you'll need to know intervals, complementary chords, how to play the same chord on a different place on the neck of the guitar, and not be tonedeaf (=D), and hopefully your teacher will have taught you all of this. If you feel that you are capable of looking at guitar tabs and knowing how to play a song by yourself, teaching yourself something by ear, &/or if you know all the theory you need to know, then that is the time when you can go off on your own and become your own teacher. This is sort of what I'm doing now, because everything my current teacher is teaching me I already know or have learned in some other way. I've gone through so many teachers the past 4 years that for a while I kind of gave up on myself because I felt like they were giving up on me, but I learned it was because I was advancing and was capable of doing more. So don't feel that way like I did. Just know that if you practice enough, you are becoming a better guitarist each and every day. I mostly teach myself songs now, and my current guitar teacher mainly just does some theory with me. Now, don't just take ALL of my advice from only me. Ask other people as well, such as a friend you know that plays guitar, different teachers that you think may be good for you, or even try writing to someone like Jimmy Page or The Edge. Ask them how they started and see if they can give you any advice. It sounds kinda crazy, but you never know if they'll write back. It's worth the try. I hope I have helped you a lot and that you will take what I say into consideration :) Good luck with guitar!!! (It's really, really fun...) =]

BUT SOME OF THE CORDS I TRIED LEARNING THERE ARE MINOR MAJOR AND SOMETHIGN WITH A 5 OR 6 I THINK

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE. WHICH ONES DO I LEARN

Answer
If you get frustrated too easy, then you won't like my answer. There is no easiest way. It takes a lot of time, and dedication to learn how to play a guitar. It's going to take quite some time just to condition your fingers so you're not complaining that your fingers hurt. Anyone can make noise on a guitar. It takes an artist to play it. Been playing since the 60s.

What is the best acoustic electric guitar under $1000.00?

Ackerdacke

Answer
It's really down to player preference, but I think every player would agree that in that price range look at Taylor, Takamine, or Martin.

I'd recommend one of these: Personally I'd go with the Taylor because i love the acoustic sound and it also does really well plugged in:

Taylor 214CE - $1000
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/214ce/

Takamine EC1325C - $1000
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EC132SCd/

Taylor 110CE - $800
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/110ce/

Also I'd order from Sweetwater. They give a 55 point inspection and setup your guitar for free, before shipping it out. It's way worth it. Oh plus Free Shipping

Best Acoustic Guitar for Under $2000?

Harrison

Hi I'm Harrison. I've been wanting to invest in a better acoustic guitar. I've been mainly looking at Martins and Taylors, but I've also heard good things about Breedlove and Gibson. I like clarity and a sustaining sound. I like to mainly finger pick but I also like to strum some. I like a variety of music but on an acoustic guitar, I like folk-rock and singer/songwriter.

One thing to note is that I like pure acoustic guitars. I'm pretty familiar with Mahogany and Rosewood.

If you can give me some suggestions or some that you like that would be great!

Remember, UNDER $2000.

Answer
I'd recommend the Martin OM-21 and the Taylor 312ce. They're both fine guitars. I have a Martin OM-45 which is the older brother of the OM-21 and it's a great guitar albeit way, way out of your price range.

i have been playing for 10 years, and yes it will be used for gigs.

Answer
How long have you been playing guitar and how talented are you? Do you plan on playing in gigs?

Two to three thousand dollars is alot of money to blow on an acoustic guitar. The expensive guitars aren't really worth buying unless you are exceptional at playing the guitar and are looking for a specific guitar tune with potentially more frets. Also, are you talking regular acoustic or electric acoustic?

Lotus Acoustic Guitar?

skeeter

I have a Lotus L-110 acoustic. Is it valuable? I have no case but it's in great condition.

Answer
Lotus made knock-offs of premium brand guitars, from factories which began in Japan, and then were moved to India before the company's general demise. At the time they sold for around $130, give or take depending on the model. They were considered a good value for a beginner's guitar, but had no value to serious players, as their manafacture precluded the richness in tone and sound that comes from aged solid wood tops and more premium guitar-making techniques, which is what makes premium guitars accumulate most of their increased value as time goes on if they are made well and age well.
Of course the value of any guitar is also in the eye of the beholder. You may want to take it to a reputable guitar shop and ask for a "set-up", which is basically a straightening of the neck, (I assume by the age of the guitar and your question that this is something that has fallen into your hands that was stored away for quite some time), a general check-up to see if the bridge, nut, etc. are all in solid order, a tightening of the keys that allow tuning of the strings, and whatever else may have gone astray during its time in storage. The luthier, (don't take it to a Guitar Center---find a privately-owned guitar shop-they'll also be cheaper), may be able to tell you how much you might be able to get for it on ebay or craigslist, or he or she may buy used guitars as well. If not, then the forty or so dollars you'll spend on a set-up will increase what you can ask on the aforementioned sites for the guitar. If it's in good shape and the luthier confirms that, I would say anywhere from $90-$110 would be a fair price, (the luthier may give give you better advice here), so minus the set-up, you'll make $50-$70. Or you, can just learn how to play it.

Acoustic guitar pickup suggestions?

haydo_pota

Recently bought a handmade Engleman Spruce/Indian Rosewood OM-style hand made acoustic guitar. Didn't come with a pickup, bit clueless as to what to choose, though I know I don't want a preamp/EQ. Any suggestions?

Answer
You may not want one, but if you're playing live you will desperately want a preamp/EQ if you want to be heard. Now of course you don't want to cut a hole in your custom made guitar to install one, but they make outboard preamp/EQ units that can either be mounted on your strap or as an outboard unit between you and the PA or amplifier. Fishman makes a good one.

There are lots of pickup opportunities. Your basic Fishman under-saddle pickup will require installation by a tech, and even then you'll need the outboard EQ unit. The painful truth is that you will need a preamp/EQ no matter what you do. Sunrise makes a pickup system that is pretty excellent, which consists of a soundhole pickup combined with a small microphone on the inside of the guitar. A lot of professionals like Richard Thompson and Emmylou Harris use the Sunrise. It'll set you back about $200, but it's worth it. You may have to get a tech to install it - I would recommend it. Fishman and L.R. Baggs offer similar units which also sound pretty good.

But no matter what direction you go, there are two hard truths: you will need a preamp/EQ, and you will need to have someone help you install the pickup. You can, of course, always go with the soundhole pickups, like what Dean Markley and Seymour Duncan offer, but the sad truth is that those are just single-coil guitar pickups and they end up making your guitar sound like an electric guitar.

And whatever you do, I beg you, DO NOT GET ONE OF THOSE STICK-ON TRANSDUCERS. They sound perfectly miserable.

Good luck! Here's a link to some acoustic pickups.

how does an acoustic electric guitar get it's sound?

Pebbles

I bought an acoustic electric guitar, and the pick up doesn't seem to be working. I checked the jack in, and there is power to it (sound when attaching to an amp). It does have a battery, but I replaced that, and still no sound. I took off the strings, and checked all the connections inside the guitar, everything is connected. So, I am not sure what to do next. How does the cord from the pickup get the sound from the strings on the guitar (acoustic guitar)?

Answer
There are a few different ways to have an acoustic/electric guitar functional. One is piezo pickups which is like a small microphone that can adhere internally or externally to your guitar. Another is a transducer which is typically found under the saddle of acoustic guitars. There are also soundhole pickups which functions like an electric guitars pickup but mounts in the soundhole and can be removed or installed quickly.
Both the Piezo pickup system and the transducer systems can have preamps, which is what that battery is for. Of course you need to check your battery which you did already. Check the cable next, make sure that there is signal. Then make sure your volume is up if it has a volume adjustment on it. If you don't get a signal, try wiggling the cable while its plugged in. If that doesn't work, it needs to be looked at. There could be a myriad of issues, electrical, dirty or a signal in general.

what is a very good preamp for an acoustic guitar?

Daniel

I have a Dean Exotica electric acoustic guitar. I want to make it sound better. would a good preamp be good or if its just based on the body of the guitar?

Answer
You may try to run your guitar through a good PA system or a dedicated acoustic amplifier like Fishman Loudbox (the top end ones being the choice of many pro live acoustic players).

Also, the small Yamaha THR5A amp - sounds really good for the price: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i56OQ8-fXG8 Not sure if you can hook this one up directly to a PA system if you plan on playing live though...

You may also want to check out the Fishman Aura products:
http://www.fishman.com/products/view/aura-sixteen
http://www.fishman.com/products/view/aura-spectrum-di

Please be aware that the end result always depends on the quality of the guitar, the pickup system as well as the onboard preamp. In this respect, you shouldn't really expect any miracles.

what is a good acoustic guitar to get? ?

paramore_t

i really want to get an acoustic guitar and teach myself how to play but i dont really have a lot of money though....does anyone know where i can get a good acoustic guitar for a beginner like me? lol
and when i say i dont have a lot of money i mean like $100. is there any around that price range?

Answer
The best value for a beginner acoustic guitar is the Washburn D-10. Under $300, and most professional musicians would play one onstage if they had to.
It's not a Martin, but it's the guitar I recommend for beginners.

Edit: Not in that price range; save the extra money and get a better quality instrument. It's worth the extra wait and expense.

How Much Do Beginner Acoustic Guitars Cost?

Karly

I'm 13 and I really want to learn how to play guitar. I want to start off acoustic (which i should be anyway) and i was wondering how much beginning guitars usually cost. Some things to remember:
* I'm 13
* It has to be an acoustic guitar
* It will be a hobby, I'm not going to take it as a career choice
* Please give me the cheapest you can find (but good quality) because i don't have a lot of money.

Thanks so much ahead of time!

BQ: What are good beginning brands?
@Mikey, just Mikey - I actually want to start off acoustic. I (as of right now) am not as intrested in electric as i am in acoustic. Plus, I'm trying to save money, so buying an amp wouldn't be the best choice:P

Answer
All acoustic guitars are no almost the same! This is from a guitarist. Here's a Ibanez Acoustic. Ibanez has great quality instruments. This is a value pack with the guitar, strap, tuner, and gig bag (case/bag). For $100 this is as good and cheap as it gets new.

If that's too expensive, check Craigslist or maybe a garage sale!
Good Luck and Hope It Helps!

What is the best beginners acoustic electric guitar?

Kelley G

Answer
As a beginner, I would recommend just going with the acoustic.
An acoustic guitar will have a good tone quality, but the electric , well they all sound alike.

Yamaha makes a good acoustic and when you pick your guitar, no matter what make it is, be sure to check the fingerboard and see how it frets. If you have to press down real hard to fret a cord, it is harder to play and your callouses will be real tough.

You can always purchase an electric clamp on pickup after you decide to stay with it. With an electric, you also must also consider you will need an amplifier.

If you go to a guitar store, ask the salesman to allow you to try different ones and see how you like the tone.

Happy picking to you,

Darryl S.

Acoustic vs Electric Guitar for beginners?

MsTisay

I would like to learn how to play a guitar, which should I get? I have absolutely zero background in music. Any guitar bundle recommendations(something affordable)?

Answer
learn on ELECTRIC there's no doubt about it!

you always hear that you need to learn on an acoustic guitar aye? i think that's completely wrong! yes the strings are so much harder to push down, so when you switch to electric it'll be easier but... learning on electric is so much easier! i'll give you an example.

meet josh. he's 10 years old. he has a dream of becoming a rock star some day. he tells his parents. they buy him an acoustic guitar for his b-day. they had heard that you need to learn on an acoustic guitar to be good. at first josh is so excited. a guitar! he starts to play on it. at first he's a little disappointed. he doesn't sound anything like green day etc. he gets a few lessons. he learns boulevard of broken dreams by green day. he practices for hours on his nylon string acoustic. it sounds nothing like the original song. he thinks its his fault, that he's just too bad at guitar. he gets put off playing guitar. he stops going to his lessons.he never plays guitar again.

now meet john. he's the same but his parents buy him a cheap $50 squire electric guitar and a $100 amp. he rocks out on it for 3 hours flat. he thinks its so fun. he gets lessons and learns boulevard of broken dreams by green day. he puts the distortion on his amp, turns it up to full and plays it! he loves it! he thinks its so good! 15 years later he's playing on a stage with a rock band, the crowd is cheering and his dream comes true.

now to answer your question you can learn on an acoustic and switch to electric and bass no probs but i'd recommend the opposite. i learnt on electric guitar for the first few years, then got an acoustic to go busking 4-5 years later. my teacher made me love my instrument so i succeeded. anyway first $50 electric & $100 amp, $3-400 electric, $200 acoustic, $400 amp and get better as you go on. (add bass in there somewhere. it's not always the best thing to be a bassist in a band people always forget you!)

Whats the cheapest Gibson Acoustic Guitar?

Ali

One that wont break out on me. I want a cheap one (around 100$?) thats good for beginners. Its for my 12-year old sister, so I dont want it to be huge.

Id also like it if it had the sunburst color, but yeah. Id like a cheap one, that wont die in a second, reliable, all that kind of stuff. Help=love

Answer
The cheapest Gibson guitar is the Songmaker at around $1000. They put their name on the Maestro, but as others have rightly pointed out, they are complete junk and not worth the money. Epiphone is a Gibson's licensed clone and they make guitars similar to actual Gibsons at a much lower price. The DR100 is the cheapest Epiphone acoustic at around $100 and is much better than the Maestro but still not a very good guitar for a beginner. Epiphones (and Gibsons) have fat necks and are harder for beginners with smaller hands to play. I think you'd be much better off spending your $100 on a Takamine Jasmine like this one:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Jasmine-by-Takamine-S34C-NEX-Cutaway-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=516458
You won't find any guitar with a solid top for $100 and the Takamine Jasmine is a very decent laminate top guitar that plays pretty nice for that low price. Sure, it would be better to spend $200 to get a Yamaha FG700S with a solid spruce top, but if $100 is your limit, the Takamine Jasmine is your best bet. You won't get a real Gibson for that and you should avoid those horrible cheap Maestro and First Act guitars like the plague. I've had students come to me already having bought those guitars and they are just horrid.

Where can I buy a cheap acoustic guitar?

EDEN P

I'm trying to find a cheap acoustic guitar around 100-200 dollars, thats good quality and will last me a long time, until I can afford to buy a another better one.
Its for a beginner

Answer
Cheap guitars can be found anywhere. Finding an inexpensively-priced instrument of good quality is much more difficult.

Start visiting guitar websites to research good instruments in your price range then you will have a nice starting point to find a guitar that will suit your needs. Talk with other guitar players and ask their advice also. Most will have their favorite brand but you can learn much from their experiences with first guitars.
"Cheap" guitars are more difficult to play and don't hold their tune. These problems may sour your enthusiasm for learning to play.

I paid less than $200 for a lightly used Washburn D-12 acoustic/electric at Music-Go-Round. This is a nice entry level instrument and is a good player.
