X360 Rocks

I've been learning guitar on an acoustic for 1.2 years, and I've decided to buy an electric. After a whole lotta research, I've narrowed it down to these three guitars,

Ibanez Xpt700
Di Marzio Pickups, Mahogany Body, Edge III tremolo, Neck-Thru Construction
A guy is selling this guitar for only $550 with a hard case. He bought it from singapore in Jan.

Jackson Warrior WRXT
Alder Body, Duncan Detonator Pickups, Licensed Floyd Rose tremolo, Bolt-on Maple Neck
Local Jackson Dealer, Price : $600 with a gig bag.

Jackson DX10D
Basswood Body, Duncan Designed pickups, Licensed Floyd Rose, Bolt-on Maple Neck
Local Jackson Dealer, Price : $580 with gig bag

I HAVE to choose one among these three, and I was leaning more towards the xpt700 cause it seemed like a good deal and it has been rated 10 out of 10 in many websites including UG. But the only thing that worries me, is whether the edge III tremolo would be reliable enough, although people say it stays in tune well if set up properly, majority says they're made from cheaper metals than the floyd rose, so they wear out quickly. Anyway, so would the licensed floyd rose be a heck of a lot better? OR is edge III just as good? My playing style mainly consits of metallica, megadeth, guns n' roses, slayer, a bit of opeth and some instrumental stuff like joe satriani, buckethead, and john petrucci. Anyway please pick out which will be best for me in terms of comfort and durability, since they all sound good.

Answer
I hate Jackson guitars. Their necks are thick and uncomfortable. So neither would be a consideration for me. The Xiphos is the best choice in the lot. Since Adam is selling his guitars on here... I guess I should too. I have a Xiphos XPT in Chameleon Green with an OHSC for sale. $450 is fine as long as you pick up the shipping.

Oh, the DiMarzio's on the XPT are D-Activators.

Why do you think Koreans are getting popular now a days?

delive_ran

With the recent Gangnam style dance move and remember the wonder girls that made a spectacular MTV with the song "nobody", first time I saw it I though it was made in Hollywood. I later found out it was all Koreans. What is the secret of their popularity? I know you will tell me, actually it is not a secret. Koreans are also populating in the Philippines with their different Korean gourmet. One thing I notice about Koreans they have originality, like the Gangnam style dance move, we can do that also but the song and the euphoria is exclusively Koreans. I can hardly understand the song itself, and obviously not in English language. We Filipinos are only after finish product to imitate and copy like the ABS-CBN different tv host singing of the song of BSB "i want it that way". I also notice that most Filipinos who enter singing contest do not have musical instrument like those in the US like Philip Philip who sing with his own guitar. They only sing with their own voice and music taken from the US billboard charts. I hardly see Filipinos with musical instrument with guitar or piano or flute or any equipment on stage. Just their powerful voice they think they can mesmerize the audience compared to US musicians, they performed with their equipment and they sing their own composition, you hardly see Americans singing popular hit songs. Just a microphone on their hand. This is the brand of the Filipinos. Koreans are getting popular even if they sing in their own language. That is what amaze me. While we Filipinos are singing in English most of the time. One Korean actor even penetrated Hollywood, who is that guy? Rain? The film "ninja assassin". While we cannot even penetrated the window of Hollywood. Our film are all about love, horror and comedy. But most of all love(cheap movies) of present croft of star cinema actors/actresses. We even have one Korean tv host/comedian in the Philippines which is Ryan Bang. But back in Korea, we do not have a Filipino in any Korean tv station. How come?

Answer
Lol, ok I always thought that you were as old as me, but reading through your long question I am beginning to think that you are way younger than me or that your memory is failing you.

First off (and this is going to be long -- like your Q&As) among all the Asian cultures, only the Chinese, the Indians and the Philippines have the longest histories of what we can call their homegrown entertainment industry (movies, music, etc.) that has come to be recognized worldwide. No one has come even close, yes even the Japanese are not in their league, much less the Koreans.

Among these 3 only the Chinese is probably the most ethnic, the Indians have been influenced by the Brits and the Philippines, of course by Hollywood.

The golden age of Philippine cinema is way behind us and it was a generation ago, it will probably not be resurrected until the locals at least embraced the real Filipino artists, the last great director being Lino Brocka and his contemporaries, well of course there are a new batch of young film makers and they have been making noise by winning international film awards, but without any local support, the local industry will continue to churn out their usual dramas and comedies which are the only ones making money.

Now, the golden age of Philippine music was back in the 70s with the first OPMs, which even many Asian and particularly Southeast Asian countries look up to. Why? Because even if they do not understand Tagalog they at least could enjoy it better than their own music. Case in point Freddie Aguilar (and yes with his acoustic guitar) is still probably the best known Filipino singer. "Anak" (and that is including the Tagalog version) is still being listened to the world over for how many decades now and is still probably the most well-known of all Asian songs.

Now with the age of youtube we are seeing the likes of Charice and Arnel Pineda who are both well still more popular than any Korean singer. But by the same token because of this new medium, singers from S Korean are now having that much needed exposure worldwide.

Plus add the fact that the Korean are now the new Chinese, moving to every land, opening up every kind of business and the most important ingredient (the secret you may be alluding to) that has eluded many other cultures in the region, they are now learning English. (Which was yes, our only advantage back in the day compared to many if not all Asian people).

Add that Korean businesses in their homeland are exploding so put that all together and you can probably summarized why they could be considered gaining in roads even in the music industry.

Gangnam style? Original? Taking the techonology they have out, I can compare them to 1980/90s Pinoy corny entertainers. Put the Yoyoy Villames, the Andres Es, the Micheal Vs. of that era and put in their new technology and you get gangnam style, so no Gangnam is 30 years behind.
Those dance moves that they do, we were already doing back in high school and only to be funny mind you.

And isn't it true that Donita Rose was an MTV host in Singapore way back in what the 90s. And now 20-30 years later there are still new Filipino entertainers in there.

And through the years, there are also a ton of Filipino actors/artists who have broken into Hollywood, Westend and Broadway... I don't even know where to start.

But as I've said the best years of the Philippines may be way behind them... and with the Koreans getting richer and now studying English they can only get better.

Gangnam style? It may be popular now,but really are you going to spend your hard-earned money to buy his CD or watch his concert? Ok, don't answer that...

How to learn to play electric guitar better?

DW from FL

My 27 year old son just bought his first electric guitar, he's had acoustic guitars before. He lives out in a rural area and doesn't know anyone to teach him or practice with. How can he connect with other people with the same interest? Or is there instructional videos or CD's?

Answer
Hello there,

Connect? Well, given his situation, he is not likely to physically connect with other players. So, he should consider on-line types of connections. One thing I can suggest is that he joins some of the on-line forums. There are many guitar specific forums and discussion boards. In all of those I belong to, less experienced players seeking advice are always welcome. Reading their questions and seeing their thoughts about things, helps old geezers like me keep in touch with younger players.
Here are some of my favorite forums
Surf Guitar 101.
http://surfguitar101.com/
Fender Guitar forum Strat-Talk
http://www.strat-talk.com/
Ultimate Guitar forum
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/indâ¦
Telecaster.com forum
http://www.tdpri.com/
Line 6 Community
http://line6.com/support/index.jspa

As you can probably guess from those forums, I am an old time surf guitar player and play mostly Fender guitars and amps. There are forums for about every conceivable niche of music. Just do a Google search for a forum in the type of music or guitar that interests him the most. Most of the forums do not require you to be a member to read the messages there, just to post messages. So, he can browse around the forum to see if it is on interest to him. You get to know guys there that you will never be able to physically meet. Sometimes, you wish you could meet up with them. A lot a great guys there.

Instructional materials? Frankly there is no substitute for lessons from a teaching pro. But not everyone has access to one. As a kid, I did not. There was no one around where I grew up who taught rock guitar (rural Indiana in the 1950s). I learned by any way I could. Listened to songs. If I could find a book about the guitar I got it. I played with anyone I could. Older kids who play (who also had never had lessons) would give me tips and show me how to do various techniques. I figure those guys unwittingly taught me every bad habit and improper technique they knew. Took me years to get straightened out. Today there are a lot of decent resources on-line.

Here is a link to the 1st in a series of 12 video lessons. These are targeted at absolute beginners and cover the basics of the electric guitar pretty well. Good place to start. Gets him a foundation in the basics. He can ignore the part in the video where that guy says he will send out the lessons. They are all on Youtube now. He used to email them to you individually.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxhxIV0I5â¦

Download this chord chart to your computer. It is a handy way to look up how to play any chord.
http://www.tabguitarlessons.com/downloadâ¦

He needs to learn to read tabs. Tabs is a shorthand method of writing guitar music and is commonly used these days. Fortunately it is quick and easy to learn. Here is an article explaining tabs.
http://www.howtotuneaguitar.org/lessons/â¦

When he wants to learn some particular song, do a Google search for the song title and the word tabs. That will give you the sites that have the tabs for that song. Then go to Youtube and do a search there using the title of the song and the word lesson or the words how to play. There are a lot of good instructional videos there. (and a lot of worthless ones because they do not really teach anything).

Also for new techniques he wants to learn, search at Youtube. For example say he wants to learn to sweep pick for playing metal. You will find a video like this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Aj2wx9PYâ¦

Also there are some good videos from know guitar players there. Joe Satriani has a lot of great videos and he is a great teacher.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNDyI5b3Fâ¦
Paul Gilbert, Michael Angelo Batio and Yngwie Malsteen have videos there also (as examples).

One other piece of advice is get a decent amp and speaker. I do not like the small practice amps (10 to 20 watts of power and a 6 or 8 inch speaker). The speaker in those make you sound thin and tinny. They do not have enough power to handle gain and distortion so they run out of head room. Any 1x12 combo amp is a good beginner amp. If you buy a used one, a used 1x12 combo sells for about the price of a new small practice amp. The 12 inch speaker will give a richer fuller tone. An amp with built in effects is a good idea for beginners because it saves the cost of buying effects pedals. A good beginner amp is the Fender Mustang II 40 watt 1x12 combo digital modeling amp. It is very versatile.

I need help starting out with electric guitar?

HC

Hey guys,
I used to take acoustic guitar and, when i played it, i was proficient in it. (Couldn't do songs off the bat but after some practice could play - can still read tabs and such).
I need some easy songs and exercises to get back into things and learn electric guitar! Haven't played in long time.
Also some songs that sound good and some solos, hopefully some easy ones.

Internet material and links would be nice but maybe a book name or two are good as well!

Thanks chaps

Answer
Just download the tabs that you like and want to play.

You can find on where you can download tabs, backtrack, and other online tools on http://www.techcinema.com/2013/10/simplified-electric-guitar-lesson-for-beginners.html

Hope helps

I'm starting out and I was going to go electric but someone told me it better to start with acoustic which makes sense. They are cheaper right ? So what acoustic guitar is best ? And how much do they cost ?

BQ - What kind of acoustic guitar did Johnny Cash use ?

BQ2 - Are Fender Acoustics any good ?

Answer
Johnny Cash played a variety of Martin dreadnoughts. Early in his career he played a D-28 and then later moved up to a D-45. Martin made him a custom black one and eventually made two Johnny Cash special editions, the D-35 and the D-42JC, both in black finish. The cheapest one of these is the plain D-28 and that's $2,300.

Fender makes mediocre acoustic guitars in my opinion. They're stamped out in some Chinese factory. In every batch there will be a very few good ones, a few terrible ones, and a bunch of mediocre ones. You're better off with a Seagull, Ibanez, or Yamaha.

What's the best acoustic guitar for under 800 dollars?

Zach

I'm a beginner but I'm looking for a good quality acoustic guitar for under $800. I really prefer a Martin or Taylor but am open for other suggestions. I'll be playing and singing country music mostly if that helps.

Answer
A yamaha fg700s would be perfect for you at youre stage and youll have 600 to go towards a martin or taylor for when youve got more experience and are more serious about playing. You wont get a decent martin or taylor with 800. If you want something a bit better than the fg700 then try a seagull s6 or a yamaha fg730s.simon and patrick and takamine are good quality too. For me,these are the best guitar brands under $800 to try out at a few stores. Dont buy a guitar for the name, buy one for the sound and feel.ive had most of the above until i needed better.all i play now is martins as i prefer them to everything else ive played, and ive played a lot and wasted money on a lot.the cheapest quality martin
You can get is a d1gt,everything cheaper is laminate mexico models.

I bought my first guitar amp yesterday at a local music shop. It's a Stagg 20 GA R amp with built in overdrive effect I bought for $100. I must say, I'm kinda impress with the clean tone but I can't seem to get a decent distortion effect. I would like to know how to set this amp to get some decent rock tone for practice. I would also like to ask if a distortion pedal would sound better than the built in overdrive? Cause if is then I'm planning to buy a pedal one's I improve my play.
My electric guitar is a Squier Bullet Strat btw....
What about the equalizers, reverb??do they help create a decent distortion tone?

Answer
Some amp's built in overdrive is not as much as most of the young kids want these days. It will not give you a "metal" distortion, no matter how hard you try.
It's the same with the Fender Frontman that comes with Squier Starter packs. the distortion is OK for 60's -70's rock, but not good for 80's metal and beyond. Of course, we really don't see Stagg much here in the U.S. ,so I don't have any reference points to go by for their products, though I know they are very prevalent in the UK and have a decent reputation for budget copy guitars.

But I took a look at a picture of the front panel of your amp..
Tommy Mc is right Crank the "gain" on the overdrive channel all the way to 10. Bass to 10, treble to 8, mid to about 6. (not sure what "pure Mid" (i think that's what it says) is so you'll have to play with that yourself put it at 5 to start.)
I've never been much of a reverb fan, so leave that at 2-3 maybe. or off.

Use your bridge pickup for most rhythm metal/distorted riffs. (BTW , the tone controls on the guitar don't do anything on the bridge pickup, those are for the middle and neck)

If you are completely new at guitar, distortion is not important. You should learn the basics first using the clean channel.
You can use the 2nd or 4th position on the pickup selector to get an interesting tone that mimics an acoustic fairly well.

Here's a good site to start with:
http://all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_scales.php
Lots of guitar info and lessons too on that site.

Here's a beginner site with lots of easy songs to start to learn:
http://www.guitarguitar.net/guitar-song-book.shtml

Don't worry about playing leads or anything for at least 6 months. you'll find it easier to try once you have some time under your belt. If you try now it'll just piss you off.

I bought an acoustic guitar for 200 dollars. I've been learning how to play for almost two months now. I am very passionate about heavy metal and that is why I am wanting an electric guitar. Ever since I picked up learning how to play the guitar I can't put it down. Should I invest in a more expensive guitar and amp or should I wait and spend less starting off? Thank you.

Answer
As you said you are passionate and cannot put it down, this is a very good sign for your guitar learning growth.Go ahead and invest appropriately and get a good guitar and amp as it will always inspire you to play and challenge yourself.Getting a cheap instrument can sometimes put you off from achieving your guitar playing goals. Its for the people who just mess around with something for a while and then give it up.So spend wisely and ROCK OUT.

I am predominantly an acoustic guitar player. I am looking to purchase an amp and I was leaning towards this Fishman one. I would obviously use it for acoustic guitar but if I want to plug my electric guitar into it as well, is that okay? I really like this Fishman amp. Should I instead just get one that is more versatile and can suit both?

Answer
I have worked with all the amps mentioned and discovered long ago a good combo amp (meaning either a tube/solid state or separate head and speaker unit) can by itself perform well for both.

Acoustic amps are circuited (signal path and routing, etc.) to respond best with the (piezo) pickups that are installed and meant for most acoustic guitars of worth. Not really the transducers for overdrives, distortion or other effects other than the standard reverb, tremolo (vibrato) and chorus circuits. Not enough (signal separation and channeling) diversity for any solid body or those that have different pickups.

These pickups take advantage of the acoustic (body chamber) rebound and resonance of what acoustics are designed for, and respond the best in the whole process.

Is why, some acoustic electric players may gravitate toward to an exclusive acoustic amp in hopes of bringing out the best in their own instrument of choice. As these units, are then tried to be paired with the particular pickups installed in their acoustic guitars.

Depends upon the player's ears all around, to make the real difference.

Answer
Yamaha, Epiphone, and Takamine (Jasmine) make reliable beginner guitars ($150-300 range). If you have about $200 available, the best bang for the buck would be the Yamaha FG-700S on account of its solid spruce top (most guitars at that price are all-laminated construction).

Answer
Take someone with you who is already into playing guitar to help make your choice when shopping for your guitar. Good to try out all the units to compare and find the ones that will fit your present needs when it comes to feel, sound, performance and price range.

Brands are many, even 'low-end' models are good to begin with: Alvarez; Art & Lutherie; Dean; Epiphone; Ibanez; Jasmine(Takamine); Johnson; Lag; Michael Kelly; Seagull; Washburn and Yamaha.

Great adventure to begin with. Welcome to the world of axes.

Answer
Can you play acoustic guitar songs with an electric? Yes.

I want to play acoustic guitar songs and want to try starting electric guitar songs, You can do this. The songs written for the electric will not sound the same of course.

But I don't want to have 2 different guitars. You will eventually.

I want to get a guitar, but I'm confused at which one. Start with the acoustic first. Almost all beginners start out with an acoustic. From the question you seem more interested in the acoustic anyway.

I have an acoustic guitar I wish to learn how to play. It comes with 10 DVD videos on how to play the guitar from beginner all the way to more advanced. The question is- How hard is it to learn how to play the guitar by yourself? I can't really afford lessons right now because money is tight but I would love to teach myself how to play if possible.

Answer
I took a few guitar lessons and then I taught myself. Personally I would recommend teaching yourself because you can go at your own pace. If you don't know how to do something you can always look it up on youtube. I didn't really learn notes but I learned to read tablature, or tabs, instead. I'm learning more chords with a guitar chord encyclopedia (very helpful I must say). Have fun!

I'm going to buy an electric-acoustic guitar in the coming weeks, but I really don't know how to judge them. I feel I've made good choices with my other guitars (acoustic and electric), but I haven't had much experience with the hybrid. Do I hold them to the same standards of feel and sound as an acoustic? Should an electric-acoustic sound just as good unplugged as an acoustic does? Should I go for a straight pickup system, or a mic-and-pickup?

Any answers at all would be very appreciated.

Answer
It depends - are you going to use it mainly plugged in or acoustic? If you already have a good acoustic then it's plugged in sound is the most important, right? Takamine makes some laminate top guitars with their premium pick-up system (Nt4, I think) - they sound weak acoustically but sound perfect plugged in. If you want the best of both worlds, try the Alvarez Artist Series - you get a choice of body styles and woods and a great pick-up system (Sys 600). You can plug a mic into the system. Going up the $$$ scale, Taylor's expression system sounds great, as does the Fishman Aura system that Martin uses on some guitars. I would avoid the standard systems on Epiphones and Ibanez etc - they sound too electric. Make sure you try them out with the type of amplifier or PA you are going to use - it makes a big difference, some pick-up systems have an "exciter" to make guitar amps sound more acoustic.
In a band situation, mic systems always seem to feed back - I would use one only if you play solo - or maybe a duo with low volume monitors. Good Luck

How hard is it to learn acoustic guitar?

James

Im thinking about getting a acoustic guitar, also what is the best brand, how long would it take to learn enough to play decently.
Then also if i took lessons or not.

Answer
It's hard. If it were easy then everybody would do it. But it has been the most rewarding thing I've ever done next to raising my children. And I've raised both of them as musicians. How fast you'll learn depends on you and how good your guitar teacher is. I'm a guitar instructor and most of my students can be playing songs after 4 to 6 lessons and be competent players in a year or so. The best guitar is the one you feel the most comfortable with. The best brands are Gibson, Taylor, Martin, Epiphone Masterbilt, Washburn. These are also some of the most expensive brands. You get what you pay for in the guitar world. But there are many less expensive ones on the market for the beginning player. Good luck and hope you stay with it.

Should I learn to play acoustic guitar or piano?

My grandmother is in town and she asked me what I wanted and of course I've been dying to play an instrument, and she agreed to buy me one. Now, I was looking in Walmart and they have both acoustic guitars and keyboards for reasonable prices. My questions are:
Which is better for beginners?
Which is easier to learn?
Which has more benefits in the end?

Thanks for your help :)
Thank you all so much. I'm going to school, then I'll choose best answer. Definitely gave me a better insight!

Answer
I don't know why I'm answering since you already have 10 answers, but whatever.

I think the people that said pick guitar or pick piano are biased, especially that first one, because he/she obviously hasn't played the other instrument, and if they have, then they are simply imposing their own opinion on you...

I think you should choose the instrument you think you will enjoy playing for a long time. Since it takes years to fully master an instrument, you have to pick one and stick with it.

The guitar is an easy instrument to pick up, mainly because it has frets (the lines where you put your fingers) and only 6 strings. It is easy at first, of course, but it gets harder as you progress into harder songs, and you learn different techniques.

The piano, on the other hand, is a bit harder to start off. Mainly because of the large number of piano keys, which you have to memorize, and because you have to learn to read and perform notes NOT ONLY on the treble clef, but also on the bass clef. On the guitar, I believe you only need to understand the treble clef (it's been a while since I've played so I can't remember exactly).

If you think you are going to be playing more instruments besides the piano/guitar, or plan on playing both of them, I suggest you choose the piano first, because it serves as a good foundation for understanding music theory, reading notes, and the like.

On the other hand, if you wish to join/start a band, or you want to play more songs around/with your friends, then you should choose the guitar. Of course, there are also keyboardists in bands, so that doesn't mean you should choose guitar just for the sake of joining a band. There are also orchestras that include pianos.

You may also want to consider other instruments besides the piano and acoustic guitar, but this is entirely up to you. Just know that if you do not enjoy playing either the piano or the acoustic guitar, there are still plenty of other options open to you, and it's never too late to start learning how to play an instrument.

One last thing, of which some of the other answerers mentioned, is that it would not be in your best interest to purchase an instrument from Wal-Mart....Although they may be cheap, you will really get what you pay for. I would advise you to consider buying an instrument from a local music store, or perhaps a store affiliated with some of the bigger music company names, such as Suzuki, Royal Conservatory, or Miriam's School of Music (I got my instrument from Miriam's, because it was decent price). Although the instrument may be quite expensive, you will definitely get your dollars worth, and the instrument should last for years. Make sure you examine an instrument before you buy it, try playing on it (test it out), or even ask them to test it out (that's what I did when I bought my first instrument). Make sure there are no scratches or marks, and it's in perfect condition.

Also, I would like to mention that I agree with your idea of purchasing a keyboard rather than a piano, because pianos can be very large and expensive, and it is also VERY expensive to hire a piano repairer. For the acoustic guitar, your major concern is breaking a string, which you can always fix by going to a local music store, buying a pack of strings, and kindly asking them to help you put them back on.

Anyways, hope this helped, and good luck with your instrument!

By the way, sorry for rambling on for so long...........;p

Good way to learn guitar besides personal lessons?

MxSan54

I just found my acoustic guitar and I'm home schooled so I'd have a lot of time to practice. But monies tighter recently with parents and stuff so is there a good way learn acoustic guitar for complete beginners other than going out and taking lessons?
Thanks guys, those are pretty good suggestions. I Will probably get books on how to learn the music like cords and stuff like that.

Answer
You need a few books to teach you the basics. Like goto your book store and get Guitar for dummies or Similar. There are probably more specific ones, that may even be focused on acoustic guitar. It doesn't really matter which ones you get - just get a few and compare what they teach. You want to learn chords, a simple song or something, and then learn to read tabs.

You need the internet to find tabs, to learn a bunch of songs to bring you to an intermediate level.

Books can give theory too.

A metronome will help a lot, as will being able to record yourself. Hooking a mic up to a PC can do this with audacity, but there are also a lot of portable recorders out there that have pretty good built in stereo mics (Zoom H series, Tascam, Sony).

Can I replace parts of my Epiphone John Lennon Acoustic Guitar?

I took off the top part of my Epiphone John Lennon Acoustic guitar. The part that covers up the truss rod and I put it and the screws into a plastic bag. For some reason I can't find that bag. I have been looking EVERYWHERE! Is it possible to replace that part that covers the truss rod, specifically for my guitar? Will it be expensive? :/

Answer
This site had a variety of truss rod covers
http://guitarheads.net/products/hardware/plates/trcbw2ply.html

You want the "C" model. It looks correct, but there is no "e" on it

Here's one with an E...it has slightly different dimensions than the other link, and may be more applicable to your guitar.
I'm pretty sure Epiphone doesn't make "custom" plates for different guitars. They have set shapes and probably use them on many different models.
Most of their acoustic have a bell shaped one. The John Lennon model has the E and the little scoop on top.

hope that helps.

What is the best brand of acoustic guitar and why?

I'm looking into buying an acoustic guitar. Although I've played 8 years I've only ever owned Yamaha's. I really want to get a nice, durable acoustic guitar. Which brands and styles do you recommend and why? Also, how much would I expect to pay for the acoustic you suggest?

Answer
there are MANY good brands of acoustics

it depends on your "price range"

unless you have the time and money to check out the MANY small guitar companies, (and there are a LOT of good ones)
I feel that Taylor and Martin make the best American guitars,
between $1500 and $5000

they best ting to do, is to find a local music store, that carries many acoustics, and try them your self?

good luck

What acoustic guitar brand should i get for a beginner and price range?

Missinthec

i was thinking an acoustic guitar, maybe black.
would yamaha be a good brand for beginners?
i don't know much about guitars, and what price range should it be in? i heard that you shouldn't get one too cheap. so im not sure.
Thanks for helping!

Answer
I could name you brands of guitars I've heard, and brands I've played, and brands I like, but it wouldn't make a difference. Instead of telling you which brand is king, here are some tips:

Honestly, my best advice is to go to your guitar shop and look at the brands. You can go online to get one, but it's a hit or miss when talking about how you'll like the sound and the feel.

Type: If you're a beginner, I would go for a nylon string guitar, as a nylon string guitar is easier on your fingers. The first guitar I played was on a Yamaha classical guitar, so I think Yamaha's are great. But I wouldn't say only get the Yamaha, because there might be a better guitar you find there.

Price range: Below $500. I wouldn't say you need a minimum, as long as you don't get the "Learn guitar in whatever kit" with the cheap ass acoustic the size of a breadbox at Barnes & Noble, but probably not under $100 (unless it seems legit. If you can't tell, probably don't get it).

Size: Find a guitar that you like at the shop, based on the size and feel. In classical guitars there isn't much of the size issue (they're pretty much all the same size), but if you get a steel string, there will be a great variety of sizes. Concert size, dreadnought, curved back, jumbo, etc... Size is just a couple of numbers and dimensions. What matters is how it feels for you to play it. If it's too big or small, the size will get in the way of learning the guitar. So the best thing to do is not worry about the brand name and experiment with different sizes.

Sound: You don't want it to sound terrible, but it doesn't matter as much as the feel. It's great to have a nice sounding guitar, but it's not going to make a difference. A guitarist might sound better on a new Alvarez than a half a century's old Yamaha, but a great and experienced guitarist playing an old, rickety guitar will always sound better than a beginner with an expensive and exquisite sounding Martin or Taylor.

Pawn Shops: Is there one in your area? Go! They'll almost always have guitars in store, so check it out. When dealing with pawn shop guitars it's almost always necessary to have an expert, or anyone who knows about guitars with you, so ask your guitar teacher to go shopping. If your pawn shop is a nicer one, some or all of the guitars might be new. Sometimes, guitar manufacturers will sell new models to pawn shops, just because there is a blemish in the wood, or a weird pattern. The pawned ones are very cheep, but the "outlet" models will still be cheep. I got a new Michael Kelly from a pawnshop for $150, and it's been great for five years so far.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW A GUITAR EXPERT, but still want to go to a pawnshop, look out for a couple of things.
1) Play the strings: Go up each string, and play them at each fret (not long), just to make sure there is no buzzing. If you're not sure what this means, or you're having trouble with this, ask the pawn shop guy to do it. They all pretty much have basic guitar knowledge, if they aren't experts.
2) Sight for problems: From the base of the guitar, look up across the fret board. If you, see a strange bend back, or if any frets look out of place, or crooked, not good. Again, ask the pawnshop guy.
3) STAY AWAY FROM CRACKS: It might mean that the guitar is cheap as dirt, but with use, the crack will spread, and your precious little antique of a guitar will crack in two, with damage beyond repair in a guitar shop.

Thats pretty much it. I hope that you can use this advice and get yourself a great guitar.

what is the difference between an elavation guitar and stratocaster guitar?

My son has guitar lessons and his teacher has said he is ready for a stratocaster guitar, I know nothing about guitars so please help. Elevation seem much cheaper but look the same and seem to offer pretty much the same. Any advise would be helpful. Thank you

Answer
I cannot seem to see the logic in saying that someone is ready for a particular guitar. the only real difference is tone, and playability. the only real thing that is not for beginners is a floyd rose bridge, but thats not the issue in this case. also, certain styles are made easier by particular guitars. for example players who love to play at a million miles per hour prefer thinner necks.

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/catalogId/1500001501/partNumber/5407316.htm
heres a link for an elevation brand guitar, is this the one you are talking about? and in my opinion it is a strat.

Fender only has the trademark to the headstock so essentially everyone makes a strat knockoff. officially branded starts will be by either fender or squier their subsidiary.

so back to the question. the guitar world is a complex web of price vs performance. usually a good compromise can be found. For example a squier Strat is a stratocaster per se, but craftsmanship will be lower than a more expensive fender counterpart. There will be differences in basically everything. Hardware, wood, and fretwork will suffer on the student guitars.

also, all this hinges upon what your son is playing on now. If it is an acoustic, than i see where the teacher is going. If he is playing on an inexpensive student guitar than perhaps he just means its time to upgrade to a more playable guitar?

ultimately in basically all large guitar brands you get what you pay for. There are smaller house brands out there that do offer much better bang for your buck. The only issue with these is you have to know what you are looking at, otherwise you will be worse off. two smaller brands that i absolutely whole heartedly trust are Agile, and Raven West Guitars. Their management really stands behind their product.

expect to pay more than 200. 300 will get you a very usable intermediate guitar. so is your son really ready for a $300 guitar?

if exact models in question were shown it would be infinitely easier to offer advice. currently i am just probing in the dark.

good luck

How much does it cost for a decent guitar?

DetectiveB

I'm in the uk, a beginner would like to learn how to play an acoustic... but how much would it be for a decent guitar? i figure if i'm going to get one i might as well get a good one.. help please

Answer
For a beginner you can get a "decent" beginner guitar for about $200 (US). There are some passable beginner guitars for less like the Epiphone DR-100 or Takamine Jasmine, but to get a "decent" guitar you really want something with a solid top. The Yamaha FG700S, at $199, is, in my opinion, the best solid top acoustic guitar for a beginner under $200.

Once you get more skilled, a "decent" intermediate guitar would probably be around $700. That would include some of the lower end Taylor and Martins and most of the Takamine, Seagull, and Breedlove guitars.

More advanced players will spend thousands on what they consider a "decent" guitar and most will thumb their noses at a $200 beginner guitar because it's not hand made from all solid woods.

But since you're a beginner, that $200 Yamaha FG700S would be a great first guitar to own.
