Answer
The obvious answer is Native Instruments Guitar Rig. http://www.guitarcenter.com/New-Gear.gc?internal=1&src=guitar+rig&Search.x=0&Search.y=0&Search=Go
Here is information about the top 5 products in that category: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/industry_news/top_5_guitar_amp_modeling_software_products.html
The problem with using your PC s a guitar amplifier is that the PC has a lousy sound card in it. It also has pretty poor speakers unless you have external studio quality monitors for your sound.
In my opinion, you would be better off getting a BOSS ME-25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xty4VdhDAYc and a good pair of studio quality headphones and it will be easier to use and will sound a great deal better than using your computer. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Boss-ME-25-Guitar-Multi-Effects-Pedal-105791446-i1509963.gc

Electric Guitar - laptop question?
kaptainfel
I want to plug a fairly cheap electric guitar into my laptop and listen to what i am playing through headphones connected to the headphone socket of my laptop.
Do i need a special adapter between the electric guitar and the laptop ?
I presume I plug it into the microphone socket of the laptop ?
If I connect via USB will the laptop use windows media player to play what I am playing through the headphones or laptop speakers ?
Answer
Your best bet is to buy a Lightsnake cable (it plugs your guitar into the computer via USB) and that way you can even record. If you buy Native Instruments' "Guitar Rig 3" then you have the power of multiple amps at your fingertips. Guitar Rig is an AWESOME program that allows you to take any acoustic guitar sound clip and re-route it through the virtual amps it has, thus turning them electric. You also have bass amps and multiple SFX amps available, and if you buy the Rig Kontrol foot pedal with Guitar Rig, you can just plug your guitar into the pedal and plug the pedal into your computer and you're set.
