How much is an acoustic guitar?

I want to learn how to play a guitar, but i don't want to buy a really expensive one or really cheap one. Where can I buy an acoustic guitar for beginners and how much would it cost?

And is it hard to play? I already play the violin and piano.
How long do you think it would take to be ok at it? Do you think being self-taught would be ok?

You need to learn and practice the chords and hand positions.

It takes practice to get used to it. You get calluses on your fingers. But that's part of it.

You'll be fine being self-taught. But you have to practice correct habits before they become bad. There are a lot of YouTube videos. Practice songs you like, look up chords @ http://www.ultimate-guitar.com. Also learn how to read tabs.

It really helps to practice with songs you know because you know the tempo and how it sounds. It takes a lot of patience and practice everyday. You'll do fine.

I think its a good idea to take lessons from a real person to make sure you get a solid foundation.
Some basic things you'll want to learn are:
Names of the strings
"Open" Chords
Notes of the frets (at least the first 5 frets)

How hard is it to teach yourself to play the acoustic guitar?

I'm considering asking for an acoustic guitar for my birthday or Christmas, but I don't want to have my parents buy it and then waste their money on me not learning how to play.

A guitar is probably the best hobby you can have. You can do anything from becoming famous to just playing around with it while watching TV. Teaching yourself is impossible considering that you don't know anything when you first get it, so here's what you need to know:

How to form basic chords such as A, B, C, D, E, F, G, Am, Em

String names (Low E, A, D, G, B, high E)

How to read tabs will really help if you want to play actual songs by yourself.

You can find tutorials on all of those on Youtube or your parents might even know. Also, one more thing about acoustic, if you're going to get one, get one that has a plug-in for an amp. Ask for a tuner as well. As a beginner you won't have the same ears as you will have in a year or two, so a tuner will help you out a lot.

Its a mini barre chord you you bar the 1st fret on the b and e strings with your pointer finger(if your a righty) middle on the second and ring on the 3rd. Oh you shoud learn barre chords from youtube you'll learn the forms and whatnot. I know a few more songs but its best you watch em on you tube like i did so you see what they look like.
