I have been playing an acoustic fender for awhile now and im ready to upgrade to an electric guitar. I have no idea where to start. I am looking for something around 300 dollars or less (new) that still has great sound quality and is attractive. I will mostly be playing metal/pop/rock (if that makes any difference).

Specific guitars would be great instead of general brand names.

Also, information on smaller but great quality amps would be cool.

Thank you! :)

Answer
Epiphone Les Paul is a good inexpensive electric guitar, but I wouldn't go for the cheapest model you can find. Its worth the investment to go more into the 400-500 dollar range, you'll get a much better quality instrument. the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain Top Electric Guitar is a good choice, as is a Fender Standard Stratocaster. Both are around $400. just go to a store and try everything in your price range and see what sticks out to you.
As far as amps go, try a few 15-30 watt amps. About 100-200 would be good to spend on that. If your looking to perform soon with that amp, spend a little more and get a 75-100 watt amp, which should be good for small gigs. Peavey, Line 6, Fender, and Marshall make great amps

I always played my friend's guitar and need to buy my own one.
What are some good suggestions on low-end acoustic guitars, as I am on a semi-budget.

Thanks for any help!

Answer
I second finding a good music store, preferably one that gives lessons and has a good, helpful staff. They should be able to help. I would caution against buying used, especially on Craigslist, until you've played for a bit and have some idea how to evaluate the condition of a guitar, especially an acoustic. You'll also want to have one set up properly so it plays nicely and stays in tune. Again, a shop with a good luthier on staff will help greatly.

As for specific brand recommendations, there are many great guitars. If you can swing something in the $350-$400 range new, a Seagull, Simon & Patrick or Art & Lutherie (all made by the same company in Canada) are great choices, as is the Taylor Big Baby, If you are looking to spend less, both Alvarez and Yamaha make some very nice, low cost acoustics.

What would be a good acoustic guitar to buy for...?

I've played electric guitar for almost a year now, and I want to try out an acoustic guitar, I don't want a starter pack thing, most of the guitars I've seen come from those are pretty crappy, all of the electric guitars that is...

So what's a decent low-budget acoustic guitar to buy?

Answer
The best acoustic guitar for the money, ( in my professional opinion) is a Samick. The Greg Bennett series are great. They are comparable to many guitars costing 2 to 3 as much. The average price of an acoustic-electric is $350 to $400. They set up good right out of the box, or "off the music store wall" as it were. I own 2 of them and recommend them to my students who play acoustic.

I really want to start learning how to play acoustic guitar but I dont know where to start off. Whats some good beginner acoustic guitars?

Also, are there any tutorial sites or videos that are good to learn from?

Answer
I started with a fender T-bucket 300ce, for a beginner, it's an amazing guitar. Around $200-300 depending on the sales you find. But there are many decent beginner guitars out there, try to look for one that has a "solid wood top" and "solid wood back and sides", the sound quality is MUCH better.

Ultimateguitar.com is the-place-to-go for learning some songs fast. You will need to learn how to read guitar tablature (not the same as sheet music) which is quite simple after a couple weeks of study. Learn some "open chord shapes" (A, C, D, E, G, A minor, E minor) they will come in handy once you memorize the shapes. Once you learned those chords, move onto "barre chords" (B, F etc..), these take a little more time to learn since they wear your hand out VERY fast, but you will get used to it.

After you learn some simple songs and figure out if you want to take music more serious, buy a better acoustic (Martin, Taylor, guild) and start learning more advanced chords, scales, theory, and fingerpicking.

Have fun!!!

I think its a good idea to take lessons from a real person to make sure you get a solid foundation.
Some basic things you'll want to learn are:
Names of the strings
"Open" Chords
Notes of the frets (at least the first 5 frets)

Learn these things and you'll be well on your way. Have Fun!

What is the best beginner acoustic guitar to buy?

My aim is to learn the acoustic guitar and then move on to the bass guitar.
I was thinking about buying the Yamaha FG700 acoustic but then i was given advice saying that Yamaha is crap and the Johnson acoustic guitars are better and cheaper.
I want to make sure that when i finally buy my acoustic guitar, i don't start wishing i bought a different one.

Answer
No matter what guitar you buy, you're probably going to wish you'd bought a different one. It's the nature of things.

That said, I have zero experience with Johnson guitars (never heard of them). But I've played some good Samicks and Corts. Then there's the low-end Epiphones and Squires (owned by Gibson and Fender, respectively). Of course, if you'd like to try something totally different, you may look at an Applause by Ovation -- they have a round, Lycra back, which greatly changes the feel of them. Although a bit of warning: people generally either love or loathe round-back guitars; there's very little middle-ground.

The key is to play as many as you can lay your hands on and find out which guitar feels the most comfortable in your hands; if it's not comfortable to play, then you're never going to play it. Then eventually you can move up and get a Gibson, Taylor, or Martin (the real King of the Acoustic Guitar).

It's your basic plywood top acoustic - better than most. For a little more money you can get a SOLID wood top guitar that you'll have for 50 years. The Washburn D10S is $260 with a hard case at musiciansfriend.com and other places. The Yamaha FG700S is $200 (no case). Look for an "S" in the model number.

What is the most suitable, good, cheap acoustic guitar for beginners who have no experience?

Answer
Take someone with you who is already into playing guitar to help make your choice when shopping for your guitar. Good to try out all the units to compare and find the ones that will fit your present needs when it comes to feel, sound, performance and price range.

Brands are many, even 'low-end' models are good to begin with: Alvarez; Art & Lutherie; Dean; Epiphone; Ibanez; Jasmine(Takamine); Johnson; Lag; Michael Kelly; Seagull; Washburn and Yamaha.

Great adventure to begin with. Welcome to the world of axes.

Im going to GC to look at some acoustic guitars. What might be the range of prices? What is a good brand of acoustic guitar?

Answer
Entry level guitars run about $150-300 and should meet a beginner's needs. Yamaha is one of the better entry level brands.

Different brands specialize in different price ranges. You will generally get the best value by buying a brand whose core expertise is in the price range you want.

Once you have been playing for a year or two, you'll be more able to evaluate different guitars, and you'll have more idea what you want. That's the time to start thinking about a more expensive instrument.

What type of acoustic guitar should I get?

delbert050

I'm looking to get a new acoustic guitar for a price range that only goes up to about $400ish.
Whats a some good acoustic guitars that fit into that price range?
and just a typical acoustic guitar

Answer
Your budget is a realistic one- you can get a very good instrument for under $400. Here are some guidelines that may help:

TYPE- Chances are, you are most likely to want a steel-string guitar- nylon strings are easier on your fingers, but the necks are wide, which makes reaching the top-most strings difficult.

BODY SIZE Most acoustic guitars sold have a "dreadnaught" sized body, with a large body (particularly the "lower bout,") which makes for a bassy sound, and can be hard to reach around for smaller folks. A better balanced sound comes from a smaller body, such as Seagull's "Folk" sized guitars, or Martin's 00 size.

FRET BOARD WIDTH Again, classical/nylon strings have rather wide fretboards, Dreadnaughts have quite narrow ones. Again, the Folk or OO has a good balance.

NECK THICKNESS Not usually an issue for acoustic guitars, most necks are of around the same thickness and "profile," so don't worry about it- if a guitar feels good when you wrap your fretting hand around the neck, and you don't have trouble reaching all six strings, that's good enough.

EXTRAS It seems many acoustic guitars have electronics added to them, so that you can play them though an amplifier or PA. You will see a small (2" x 2" or so) panel on the side of the guitar, facing you as you play it, that has bass, treble, etc. controls on it. Really, this is an expense you can easily do without- you may never "plug it in," this being your first guitar. There is one benefit to this, though- these days, this often includes a built-in tuner. In my opinion, a pickup/preamp (what this assembly is called) is pointless UNLESS it includes a tuner, but perhaps worth the little extra money if it does have a tuner.
A plain-top guitar will cost you far less than a fancy, dolled-up one, and will play just as well, sound just as good- maybe even better.

BRANDS/MAKES Godin makes some excellent guitars, and terrific values. Art & Luthier, and Norman are their least-expensive brands, Seagull just a bit pricier. You should be able to stay within your $400 budget. Alvarez and Ibanez (not at all related, in spite of the association the "z's" inplies) are good brands, too, although I think Seagulls are, in most cases, better values. Epiphone makes some good guitars, but their lower-priced stuff (under $200 or 300) is suspect, avoid Epi's unless you are serious about spending $400 or more. Martins and Taylors are usually excellent guitars, but beware: if you find those examples of either in your price range, you are getting things like HPL (high pressure laminate- a manufactured product, only distantly related to wood), and "Made in China." Yup, a Martin made in China. What HAS the world come to?? Fender makes some good electric guitars, but AVOID their acoustics- Fender only makes acoustics because people know the name; their acoustics are not good values, nor are the particularly good guitars. A possible exception: Fender makes some very cool thin-body "Telecoustics," which are cool guitars, but be warned- they sound thin when played just acoustic- probably not what you are looking for.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID: Almost ANYTHING made in China. probably Indonesia and Korea, too. Too much a crap shoot as to quality and even playability. Fortunately, most of the MIC "guitar-shaped objects" are aimed at the low-end market.

BEST PLACE TO BUY: Locally-owned, acoustic-orientated shop. If they have dozens or even hundreds of acoustic guitars hanging on the walls, and fewer electrics, AND your eyes bug out when you look at the first three or four price tags, YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE. They will have less expensive guitars, and 99% of the time, know their stuff plenty well enough to make sure you buy the right guitar. Yes, you will pay a bit more, but you get much more. You can do okay at places like Guitar Center, but the chances are far greater that you will walk out with a guitar that is not quite "right" for you.

I am a guitar self learner. At the moment, I am still a beginner. However I would like to get a guitar to continue my learning. I have done some researches online and come out with some options like Charsley Festival Folk Cutaway Acoustic Guitar and Fullsize Acoustic Guitar Martin Smith W400. Which one of these is better? or any other brand to recommend?

Answer
At that end of the market its best to look into the Yamaha, Tanglewood ranges. It probably isn't worth buying a guitar like those charsley ones for £50, better to save up and get something between £100-£250. Have a look on sites such as Dolphin music, dv-247 and thomann. I've noticed thomann have a lot of very cheap Harley Benton guitars if your not convinced on spending anymore.

Rock & Pop: What's the best way to get an 'acoustic' tone out of a Stratocaster?

best acoustic guitar reverb pedal
on ... top seller of thailand yamahas band instruments agency, leader of
best acoustic guitar reverb pedal image

DWT (

I have a Stratocaster with an HSS pickup configuration (it has a humbucker in the bridge, instead of a third single coil) and I'm planning on doing a cover of a song that was recorded with an acoustic guitar. Since I don't have one (yet) I'd like to know which pickup is the best for an acoustic-esque tone, and any other tips you may have.

By the way, I'm not going to buy an acoustic emulator (or whatever they're called) pedal. I've heard demos of them on YouTube and they're not convincing at all.

Answer
Hello there,

I do agree with you that the acoustic simulator pedals do not bring the sound close to a true acoustic tone. And that is the best thing you can use to get as close to an acoustic tone. You just don't get an electric to sound like an acoustic. So plan your cover to have a nice sound that you like, but not a true acoustic sound.

The acoustic has a very clean sound, Usually very full and rich. Lets use that as the target sound. You know the bridge position pickup gives a brittle sound, so do not use it. Use the neck or probably better the neck and mid together. Single coils have greater clarity than humbuckers so they should be better choice. On your amp, cut the gain or drive. zero distortion. We are looking for as clean a tone as your amp can produce. Distortion, overdrive or other tone altering effects should be off. Time based effects can be used. A slight reverb, maybe 2 - 3 on the knob, should add a little depth to the sound.

Different sets of pickups sound different and respond to different amps differently. I am not telling you anything you do not already know. The point is I cannot give you the EQ setting.. You will have to tweak the EQ (treble, mid and bass) to get a full mellow tone that is not too bright.

In the end, you will not sound like an acoustic guitar, but you may capture the essence of the acoustic tone by getting a clean rich tone on your rig.

What order should I put my guitar pedals in?

Steven

Here are the pedals I have:
BOSS FV-500H (volume)
BOSS TU-3 (tuner)
BOSS RV-5 (reverb)
BOSS DD-7 (digital delay)
BOSS RC-2 (loop)
TC Helicon H1 (harmonizer for voice) > my guitar must run through it to estimate harmonies

I play an acoustic/electric. Also, should I run through a DI box before the PA?

Answer
Definitely put the TC Helicon H1 first. This pedal works best if the signal from the guitar is clean.

Last, you will want the loop pedal. If you put it before any of the other effects pedals, you will not be able to loop your signal with those effects.

All other pedals can be put in any order you desire and you will get the same results.

I don't see why you would need a DI box at all. That's for recording.

I'm trying to find a cheap acoustic guitar around 100-200 dollars, thats good quality and will last me a long time, until I can afford to buy a another better one.
Its for a beginner

Answer
Cheap guitars can be found anywhere. Finding an inexpensively-priced instrument of good quality is much more difficult.

Start visiting guitar websites to research good instruments in your price range then you will have a nice starting point to find a guitar that will suit your needs. Talk with other guitar players and ask their advice also. Most will have their favorite brand but you can learn much from their experiences with first guitars.
"Cheap" guitars are more difficult to play and don't hold their tune. These problems may sour your enthusiasm for learning to play.

I paid less than $200 for a lightly used Washburn D-12 acoustic/electric at Music-Go-Round. This is a nice entry level instrument and is a good player.

What website has cheap acoustic guitars?

The only cheap ones i found were colored and i do not want a colored guitar i want a nice vintage standard rosewood, mahogany color those type of guitars. Can someone recommend a website where there is cheap guitars under lets see $100 :) thanks.

Answer
I've played the guitar for years, and I think your best bet is either your local craigslist.org, or any local classified listings online. Alternatively, I have noticed some very good prices on EBay and Amazon, but often the shipping costs are very high. There has been the occasional good deal on EBay with free or low shipping, though, so depending on your patience level, it could be worth a look. Guitar Center is national, so maybe they have reasonable shipping - they have periodical blow-out sales. Good luck!

best acoustic guitars makes image

Melissa

Hi guys. My name is Melissa and I'm trying to figure out the best option to amplify my acoustic guitar without making any major modifications such as drilling or widening holes. My acoustic guitar is a very old Gibson which was given to me by my grandfather who played jazz guitar in swing bands during World War 2. They really were the greatest generation. He passed away recently and the night before he passed, we spent time together. He told me I should find a way to amplify the guitar so I can play it through an electric amp. I learned to play on this guitar and always practice acoustically. The tone is amazing on this guitar and it would sound great through an amplifier. Right now, I just hear everything through the circular soundhole.

Any advice or information would help. If you can tell me a particular part name or brand. Thanks so much!

Answer
Either a magnetic soundhole pickup like the one Mikey linked to, or a cheap stick-on transducer like this: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Pickups:_Guitar,_acoustic/Schatten_Soundboard_Transducer.html
You could just let the jack hang if you didn't want to permanently mod the guitar. Maybe put the transducer inside the guitar if you're not certain about whether the adhesive might leave a mark.

Instructions can also be found on the web for making your own transducer - I remember doing it many years ago using the piezo element from a Radio Shack doorbell buzzer. ;) Didn't sound like much but it was cheap!

A question about the sound my guitar makes when sliding between frets?

Mayonaise

My acoustic guitar makes quite a screeching noise whenever I move up or down the fretboard when using bar chords (or a chord which particularly slides the low E). Can this be avoided by playing differently, or are the strings at fault (or even the guitar?)?

Answer
That's typical of acoustics. It also largely has to do with the strings. If you're using phosphor bronze strings (the standard for acoustics), they're gonna have more noise than steel/nickel strings. Also, you're likely using roundwound, which are the most common kind but by default noisy.

I'd suggest trying different strings. DR's flatwound strings are great - I use them on my acoustic for the same reason. Flatwound strings have smooth winding, so don't make noise (and also don't hurt your fingers as much). And since they're technically electric guitar strings (I'll get to that), they're steel w/ nickel coating, not phosphor bronze. http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/DR-Strings-Legend-Flatwound-Electric-Guitar-Strings-Lite?sku=105254

As for being electric strings... it should be noted that, until about the mid 70s, there was no difference between electric and acoustic strings, so acoustic strings were... nickel and steel (this is what was used for all the great folk albums of the 60s). Phosphor bronze was introduced to give a brighter sound, and it somehow just took off. But nickel/steel strings will give the guitar a warmer and rounder sound. Nevermind that it says "electric" on the package. Also, since they have round cores, they'll be easier to bend. Likewise, if it's an electric-acoustic, since nickel and steel (iron) are both highly magnetic, you'll get a more natural and fuller acoustic sound with it plugged in than w/ bronze (mostly copper and tin - not highly magnetic) strings.

So yeah... flatwound electric strings will likely solve the problem you're having and then some. Just make sure to get a thick gauge (12 or 13).

I want to play the electric guitar because I like the sound of it. Its basically one of the things that I like most about rock.

I wanna learn basically as a hobbie. And to learn how to play something since my father believes in playing some instrument to 'not waste my time'.

I really think it would be fun and more interesting than acoustic.

If I do like it, what kind of guitar should I get? (I don't need a guitar for my first lessons since my uncle has two)

I want a cheap but good guitar since its my first one and I don't wanna waste money in a guitar that I won't even know how to play.

Any other stuff I should get? I know I need an amplifier, do you know of any good small ones for beginners? Any 'lear how to play electric guitar' books?

Answer
Firstly, you won't find any guitar that's "cheap but good" - the two terms are mutually exclusive. I would say stay away from "packs" or anything advertised as being good for a beginner or described as a beginner's instrument. In this context, the term just means "crap". You need a reasonable-quality inexpensive guitar. I am in The UK so can't advise you on prices. Get the guitar from a music store, NOT on-line or from a department store. Personally, I would avoid a guitar with a so-called tremolo bridge (vibrato really) as they can be hard to set up, can cause tuning problems and add to the cost of the guitar. Remember also that extra pick ups, knobs and switches hike up the price too. Bear in mind that a beginner has no special requirements so far as equipment goes: a top of the range guitar costing several thousands of dollars would be ideal for a beginner!

As you say, you will need an amp. You will need at least one lead, picks and strap (probably), a few spare sets of strings and an inexpensive chromatic electronic tuner. The are many learn to play books and these would be a good deal better that watching some of the rubbish on Youtube - you want to keep well away from that, and tablature, until you have at least learnt the basics. A good teacher is best, but there seem to be a lot of poor, mis-guided teachers about too! Good luck, have fun.

How often should I change my strings?

Cryptomnes

I have a classical guitar, Stagg, nylon strings. I play almost every day, usually for more than 2 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less. I use Rotosound strings, and live in the UK, so it's cold (apparently that affects your strings. BQ - tell me why)

Thanks xx

Answer
How do you know if you need new guitar strings?

For Acoustic and Electric guitars
Couple of questions to answer:

1) Have you had the same strings on for over 2 months?
2) Are your strings rusty?
3) Are your strings rough?
4) Do your strings sound dull?
5) Had a string break recently?

If you answered yes to any of the above, its probably time to replace your strings.

Because of moisture on your fingers and in the atmosphere, strings corrode and rust over time and their ablility to vibrate diminishes. This not only causes the sound to dull but even worse, the feel of the strings becomes rough and will hurt or even damage your fingers.

Strings can also become brittle from too much vibration, just think of how a paper clip snaps if you twist it too much, the same happens to strings - especially if you use a lot of different tunings.

If you play a lot, say for 2 hours a day every day, then you should look at changing your guitar strings every month.
If you play less, but still strum most days, the max you should leave them on the guitar would be 2 months.

Strings are quite cheap, about £5 for a set of 6.

There is an alternative to changing your strings this often. You can buy coated strings. These last longer due to a coating on the strings that prevent dirt build up and corrosion. Coated guitar strings tend to last 3 to 5 times longer than normal strings, so you can leave them on for longer. These still need to be changed though. At least every 6 months these should be changed as they are also prone to breaking because of the vibrations of the string as explained earlier using the paper clip analogy.
Coated strings do cost more, about £12 for a set of 6, but last longer, so can work out more cost effective.

Ernie Ball Coated Strings have titanium reinforcement to make them stronger and less prone to break.

For Bass Guitars, the strings are much more substantial and tend to last longer and hold their tone. Change bass strings at least once a year.

For Classical Guitars with nylon based strings, again because of the way they are made, they don't rust, so last longer. They do age though, so do need replacing. When they age they tend to stretch and become hard to keep in tune. If you don't want to wait till this starts happening, you should look at changing them every 3 to 4 months.

So to summarise:
Change your Electric / Acoustic uncoated strings at least every 2 months.
Change your coated Electric / Acoustic strings at least every 6 months.
Change your Bass guitar strings at least once a year.
Change your Classical guitar strings at least every 4 months.

"Civil War" - Guns N Roses
"Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" - Green Day
"Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd (Just the chords)
"One" (intro) - Metallica

"What I Got" - Sublime
"Otherside" and "Can't Stop" - Red Hot Chili Peppers

There's a few that I left out, I'm sure.

I want to learn how to play acoustic guitar, but don't really want to have to pay for lessons. I know that teaching yourself is possible, but what is the best way?

Answer
It will depend on your determination. First time you learn guitar you will have difficulties in placing your fingers to form chords, memorizing the chords, struggling with muffled strings' sound, a lot of buzzes, picking the wrong strings / notes, sore fingers, etc. Basically this is all about fingers coordination and memorization. Some beginners quit in the first year or even first month. This situation is very normal and all guitarists should pass this phase before they can enjoy playing their guitars. My advise is never give up.

You will need to learn some basic theory as well in order to teach yourself how to play chords progression. Yes it is possible to teach yourself guitar with the help of online guitar tutorials or guitar books. You can also find some very useful guitar tutorials on YouTube.

Good luck with your guitar lessons.
