For guitar: Is it easier for a beginner to learn to play with an open tuning?

I'm just starting to learn to play acoustic guitar - but I have really short fingers for an adult, and find it hard to play some of the basic chords. Would it be easier to learn how to play using an open D or open G tuning?

Answer
In one sense it is easier to learn to play in open tunings. But it probably isn't the best approach to take. Even accomplished players who now mainly now play in open tunings started in standard tuning. Check out Lawerence Juber and Pierre Bensusan for an idea of what I'm talking about.

Another player to check out is Muriel Anderson. She's a petite woman with small hands who's a smokin' player.

Beginning players frequently have trouble playing chords because they're not using the correct hand positions. If at all possible take at least a few lessons to get on the right track with technique. It's easier to learn good habits than it is to unlearn bad ones. The photos in the link below will give you an idea about correct hand position.

Hang in there, playing guitar is a lot of fun!

What's a good, cheap "beginner" acoustic guitar for an adult?

I want to ask for an acoustic guitar for Christmas since I'm a broke college student, but it can't be too expensive. I basically know how to play, I learned on an electric actually.. but I'm not that great and want to get better and would rather do it on an acoustic! Any suggestions?

Answer
The Dean Playmate is the best beginners guitar you'll get. It's a cool guitar for only 70 bucks.

Here's some reviews for the Playmate and other good entry-level guitars.
