which is easier to learn; electric or acoustic guitar?

luckyme

I want to learn to play guitar. I need opinions from musicians as to which is better to learn (easier) an electric or an acoustic guitar? Thanks!

Answer
Most definitely the electric....just the chords and the progression. i started with an acoustic like an idiot but...yea
There are a lot of similarities between the electric and acoustic guitar; they each have advantages and disadvantages to the beginner. It is easier to learn to finger pick on an acoustic. Barre chords and power chords are easier to learn on an electric. Because of the nature of the acoustic guitar, most people learn how to strum them but rarely take the time to explore the many styles and sounds that it is capable of. Because of the nature of the electric guitar, many beginners learn power chords and then little else. And when the acoustic player gets his first electric, he tends to play it like an acoustic. And vice versa.

Which is "better?" If you say right off the bat that you want to learn electric, I would tell you that electric is better for you. Is this necessarily true? No. But since this is where your interests currently lie, it is true for you.

What you learn from the guitar, or anything, is usually a combination of what you want and whether or not what you discover on the way interests you enough to take a detour. If you really want to learn a riff or a solo and you learn it, will you also take the time to figure out how you can use what you learn in another song or in a different style? Only if it interests you to do so.

It used to be that people started out with acoustic guitars mostly because it was expensive to get an electric guitar (and an amplifier and everything else that you'd need). That is not the case these days. If you want to play electric and you can get yourself a good set up, then by all means do so.

Because here's the fun thing - if you choose the electric guitar now, there's no reason why you won't find yourself with an acoustic guitar somewhere down the road. I'd almost guarantee that this will happen.

Where can I find music for drunken sailor?

Q. Where can I find sheet music that I can print online for the song "What shall we do with a drunken sailor" for acoustic guitar? I'm trying to teach myself how to play, and I can do chords and everything, but I need a song to play and I wanted to try it out. Also, any other reccomendations for beginner songs to play? I need something simple, like only three different chords or so in the whole thing and a simple strumming pattern, I'm still starting out. Thanks!

Answer
I don't know where you can find the sheet music, but I'm a renaissance (pirate) performer and we do that song, so I can tell you the chords. It's a 2 chord song, E minor and D.

(Em) what shall we do with a drunken sailor
(D) what shall we do with a drunken sailor
(Em) what shall we do with a drunken sailor
(D) early in the (Em) morning.

This chord progression repeats through the song.

Hello--I am wondering wat the best beginner guitar and where to get free tabs and the BEST way to learn OTHER than lessons (too expensive). Thanks!

Answer
"Acoustic guitar" signifies NOTHING to me you have to be more specific!!

There are 3 types you see, classical, flamenco and steel. You need to specify which.

Anyway, steel is for people who are too stupid to understand complicated classical or flamenco music and is really really easy to learn just go to isohunt.com.

Classical and flamenco are for more intelligent people who can understand complicated music and require a teacher. They are very very hard and take about 12 years to bee just good at them.

How can I learn to play the acoustic guitar?

Liz

I have been wanting to learn how to play the acoustic guitar however I don't have the money to pay for classes. So how can I begin? How can I learn to tune my guitar( i own a guitar)? Do you have any suggested youtube channels, anything? Thanks:)

Answer
As much as I think the other answer is great, I honestly think he could have been more specific, so I'll try to do so.

So being a beginner in the 'music world' is always difficult, with dedicated practice, you'll get much better. Like Jesus stated, or whatever his SN is, you need to start with your basic chords. He wasn't very specific as to what those were. Basic chords mean your open-position chords, or in other words, chords that aren't being barred. Barre chords are chords that you place one finger over more than one string at one time. Avoid those for maybe a month because you need to build finger strength and get calluses so you don't feel pain when you play anymore. (It's normal, don't worry about it.) Your basic, open-position chords will be chords like: A Major, A Minor, C Major, D Major, D Minor, E Major, E Minor, G Major, and some variations like Dsus4 or stuff like that, but those are chords you can learn on the side when you learn songs. When you see chords on chord charts or tabs, they'll probably just say A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, and G. Obviously the 'm's' stand for minor. So that's that for you. Once you learn those and feel confident on those, then learn barre chords: F, B, Bm, etc. You'll see the difference and there are different ways to play each chord on the guitar. Some guitarists just use barre chords and some open-position and some use a variation of some power chords. You pick what you like.

To tune your guitar, you will need to know what notes to tune your guitar to, obviously. Standard tuning for a guitar is EBGDAE or EADGBE, however you want to look at it. EBGDAE would the strings listed from highest in pitch to lowest in pitch. In other words, if you were to think about this for position on the guitar, the strings that are lowest on the guitar/the strings that are closest to the ground are the ones you would tune first. EADGBE would be the opposite and if you are confused by explanation, I apologize greatly and I'm sure you can look up on google or YouTube 'standard tuning on a guitar' and someone will be able to explain it better than me. If you need to learn to tune your guitar, I would either buy an app on your iPod Touch/Smart Phone/iPhone. Don't get any free ones. Those are really bad and they're slow and they're honestly very annoying. If you buy an ultimate-guitar tools app, it has a tuner and even a chord chart and it's a very helpful app for guitarists. Anyway, if you don't want to do that, then buy a chromatic tuner. Some tuners are 10 dollars and some can be up to 40 dollars depending on what features the tuners have. 10 dollars is fine but I'd recommend maybe something between 20 and 30. Tuners break so it's nice to have a nicer one so they can last longer. In addition, there are tuners for guitars that you can clip onto the headstock, but you decide what you want.

If I were you, I'd start with a book and start with YouTube and maybe even charts that you can find. When I started, I started with a song because I was way too eager, but I actually started with a book and I learned how to play a basic song by picking the notes and not learning chords, but you can choose. Books are a great tool and so is the internet. If you need tabs, I'd use ultimate-guitar.com. If you need to learn songs and you don't want tabs, then I'd use either Marty Schwartz or yourguitarsage (just YouTube them). youguitarsage has MANY beginner acoustic guitar tutorials on songs that you may want to learn and Marty Schwartz has both acoustic and electric tutorials and some are more challenging and he even has tutorials on some scales. Mahalo.dom or just Mahalo has tutorials for both acoustic and electric guitars and they have different teachers for their company and you can switch between all of them and decide which one of them you like most and see which teaching style helps you.

I hope I've been some sort of help! Good luck and have fun and don't forget to practice! You don't need to learn any instrument during summer, by the way. I learned guitar during spring break and still played during school. Just keep practicing and don't get discouraged. Everyone has troubles. I know, I did and gave up for like. . . a month or two.

Ok, I am looking to buy a good acoustic/electric guitar that has a good low end and good sustain. I am hoping to get a guitar that I am going to stick with for a while. I need suggestions. Also I am only looking to spend under $500. Please help me out. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Barry,

At $500 being your limit, you're getting in the ballpark of being able to get an all-solid wood guitar, which would be a nice step up from a solid-top, laminate back/sides guitar. That being said, though, you can still get some great solid top guitars that you'll be happy with for a while. Here are a few that Amazon has that are in your price range:
- (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B8J97K?ie=UTF8&tag=choos02-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001B8J97K) - Blueridge is making some great, affordable guitars. This one is a nice, affordable dreadnought with electronics, so it's going to have a good low end like you want, and the Engelmann spruce top which will give you a richer, more complex tone than Sitka.

- (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003H5A93I?ie=UTF8&tag=choos02-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003H5A93I) - Epiphone can put out good guitars, though they can sometimes be inconsistent. At this price, though, I think this could be a good option. Solid spruce top, solid mahogany back (laminate sides). Dreadnought shape like the Blueridge will give you the good low end that you're looking for.

I think those are the only two on Amazon right now that are acoustic-electrics worth considering. What may be a good option, though, is getting a straight acoustic for that money. At $500, you'll have a few great options. And then, once you want to get out and perform with it, you can buy and install a pickup pretty cheaply and easily.

Good luck!

What is the best beginner acoustic guitar?

questionma

I am planning on starting guitar lessons. Obviously an acoustic is the right way to go in the beginning, so I'm wondering if anyone can give me suggestions as to what guitar I should pick up. I heard the Seagull S6 is a good choice for a reasonable price.

Can someone suggest an acoustic guitar that is under 500 dollars with a good rich sound?

Ideally, the guitar could be found in the bay area (california, like san francisco) :)

Thanks!

Answer
the best bet is any ibanez product. I personally prefer Fender products, but they can prove to be expensive(300-400).Ibanez puts out good starter instruments with good features and are affordable to start .A entry level acoustic or electric could run 200-300 dollars.
Then when you get your skill up, ditch it and buy a Fender. They tend to have a resale value.

I play guitar, and for the past few months i have been becoming interested in electronic music. Mostly Radiohead's stuff from Kid A and Amnesiac and such. Also some Atlas Sound and ofcourse Animal Collective (They are HUGE in our town, MaryWeather Post Pavillion is huge, i prefer older stuff...) ANYWAYS... I am really interested in making my own. In Media class, i grab a Mac and record stuff on Garageband with my ipod touch apps and put those together (I dont use the loops as much, I really want to make my own) but i am wondering where to start. Garage Band doesn't really cut it for me. Fun but i want something more. I have a Synthesizer, Synth Amp, Guitars (Electric and acoustic) and Amp. But i more want to try and work with the Synth in making something. Sorry if this question is Vague, But any help on where to begin would be VERY Helpful

Answer
If you invest in a good sampler, such as Native Instrument's Kontakt, you can access some of the most realistic sample libraries available. Kontakt not only comes with a large factory sound library, but there is also many third-party sample libraries also.

For example, check out Orange Tree Samples' libraries, which focus on extensive and realistic libraries that are intuitive to play from a MIDI keyboard and also easy to sequence with.

Alternative to hiring session orchestra musicians for own album?

Shane

Heya, I am into composing experimental music which combines popular music, such as Progressive Metal, Jazz, Electronic music, Ambience and film music and many, many other genres, with Orchestral and World music, similar to film music and music that require an orchestra. However, I am not able to afford £50,000 or so for hiring out musicians to record my album (instrumental guitar album) I am producing. I have a budget at around £6000, I am a electric, acoustic and classical guitarist and have only got available a selection of guitars and Cubase/ Sibelius music software, I have looked at sampling but sometimes they are not realistic enough, anyone suggest some hardware or software which has some realistic orchestra and world music instruments. What do film music musicianâs use that don't have the money to hire a full orchestra for world music. I listen to some of the works in film music and symphonic metal bands (e.g. therion and nightwish) and many actually have hired out real orchestras for their albums/ compositions, I want to get into composing and producing my own records, I have some basic knowledge of producing records and mixing etc in A level music technology and how to write classical music in A level music (classical) but I havenât got the budget for hiring out an orchestra, any suggestions? Btw I'm a first year student (second year in september) at Sixth form College and doing Music, Music Technology, Film Studies and Computing to give you a understanding on the resources I have available and sort of experience I have.
Ableton Live 8 seems like good software which relies on samples, but I haven't bought it yet and not sure what the software is like for orchestra instruments
Ableton Live 8 seems like good software which relies on samples, but I haven't bought it yet and not sure what the software is like for orchestra instruments

Answer
There are some pretty advanced samplers and sample libraries out there that can be quite convincing if you're good enough at sequencing.

Personally, I like NI's Kontakt. It's a VERY advanced sampler, and while the included libraries are quite good, when you combine it with something like the VSL or Miroslav library you can get some really great sounding stuff.

As I said earlier, it's really more about your sequencing abilities than the specific samples you're using. If you really understand that instruments you're writing for/trying to mimic, then you know how to write in lots of subtleties that can really take something to the next level.

Ableton Live isn't the way to go. It's basically live DJ software and is more suited to loop-based music, not orchestral mock-ups. When I'm not doing anything with audio, I usually prefer to use Logic. If I'm using audio, I gravitate towards ProTools, however more recent versions of ProTools have had much better tools for MIDI sequencing, so I find myself using Logic less and less.

I know that Danny Elfman does all of his mock-ups in Digital Performer. Other than the LA Scoring Strings library, I'm not sure what else he uses.

I'm trying to find a cheap acoustic guitar around 100-200 dollars, thats good quality and will last me a long time, until I can afford to buy a another better one.
Its for a beginner

Answer
Cheap guitars can be found anywhere. Finding an inexpensively-priced instrument of good quality is much more difficult.

Start visiting guitar websites to research good instruments in your price range then you will have a nice starting point to find a guitar that will suit your needs. Talk with other guitar players and ask their advice also. Most will have their favorite brand but you can learn much from their experiences with first guitars.
"Cheap" guitars are more difficult to play and don't hold their tune. These problems may sour your enthusiasm for learning to play.

I paid less than $200 for a lightly used Washburn D-12 acoustic/electric at Music-Go-Round. This is a nice entry level instrument and is a good player.

If I want to learn to play electric guitar, should I start with an acoustic?

Bane

I'm a total noob when it comes to playing guitar. I want to learn to play an electric guitar but I don't know if it would be better to start with (I'm guessing) a cheaper acoustic guitar. I'm a hardcore Avenged Sevenfold fan so I want the Synyster Gates Schecter but, the way I see it, I should at least get to be intermediate before dropping that much cash...

Answer
That's like asking "I want to play the organ, should I start with a piano"? I have guitar students who have started with acoustic and then went to electric. I also have some who started with electric and then went to acoustic. Do whatever you want to do; there are no logical arguments for playing something that you don't want to play.

What's a good brand for relatively cheap semi-acoustic guitars?

cheap acoustic guitars ebay

cheap acoustic guitars ebay image

Rainy days

I play both classical and acoustic guitar, but I'm interested in purchasing a semi-acoustic guitar. I don't have the money to buy anything expensive (read: over about $300) which I know narrows my choices considerably. I'd be willing to buy on Ebay, too.
So what's a good brand that makes semi-acoustic guitars?

Answer
below is a link to what i would do. the instruments are direct pricing, no middle man, but the guitars from these guys usually need to be set up (truss rod tightened, intonation set, etc.).

the first link is for a gibson 335 size guitar for $299 (!)

the second is for a les paul size semi-acoustic for $240 (i know!). browse their site as they also have models with p-90 pickups, plus telecaster-style semi hollows.

epiphone and ibanez both make decent less expensive semi-acoustic (sometimes called semi-hollow, because while they look like a hollow body guitar, there is a center wood block that is hidden under the top that runs the length of the guitar to prevent feedback), but it's hard to find a used one in your price range.

I am looking for a new acoustic guitar, advise?

Dene D

I have been playing on my beginners guitar for about 3 years and I am getting much, much better. I have been scanning Guitar Center and other websites for a cheap, good quality acoustic guitar. I would like advise, tips, hints, recommendations, ect.
Thank you!

Answer
Washburn D46SCE (my main instrument) is an excellent guitar, and you can sometimes find one for a great deal on eBay, if you're watching for it.

The D46CESP looks even cooler, IMHO (2nd link). (One of these is on eBay right now starting at $400 w/ a hard case! - 3rd link). That's an awesome deal.

(I've purchased 2 used guitars to date (2 Greg Bennett Samick models - 1 from eBay, and 1 from Music-Go-Round) without holding or playing them first, and because I had done a certain amount of research beforehand, and they were higher-end models to start with, the guitars were everything I expected and more. I payed hundreds less for each model than what they originally sold for new.)

A cutaway feature is great, and indispensable, on an acoustic to give you access to the upper frets.

You don't want to look for a new guitar that's too cheap in price, because that's generally what you'll end up getting in quality.

The Washburn models mentioned are professional-grade instruments that will not hinder you technically like a cheaper-quality guitar will.
The high-end Grover tuning keys on these models keep intonation locked in!
The action is set low, and the sound is rich and full. Find your perfect gauge Elixirs and you'll be set for your foreseeable future - never needing another guitar to keep up with your talent level.

I'm looking for an affordable 3/4 sized acoustic (preferably classical) guitar for a beginner. I've looked into getting a Baby Taylor, but I'm seeing a few mixed reviews. Any guitarists out there that would suggest this guitar or another one for a novice?

Answer
You can check out LUna guitars. They are affordable, original, big sound, and very good action. We tried some at the shop and they sounded big for the size and they are very original.

Here is a link and well worth checking.
http://www.lunaguitars.com/

As for Taylor. It is a good guitar no doubt but to say it is better than Gibosn J-50 is far fetched and the same when compared to a Martin. Let's be honest. Give what belongs to Caesar. Gibsons and Martin are up there in quality and the fact that we use those names to compare to others proves a point.

Check on e-bay for Taylors at a cheap price. I wonder why their are so many for sale and nobody keeps them ???

Answer
You can get a new Luna Trinity Parlor for $469 retail. They are a new model available this year, probably just becoming available now. I played one at a music trade show this January, and plan to buy one myself. It's a 3/4 size body, thin-width neck, acoustic-electric, with a cutaway. Sounds and plays GREAT, especially for this price range.

I've never been impressed with Seagull. A friend of mine dragged me all over town to help him evaluate used Seagulls and none of them played well at all.

Never played Alvarez.

You might also look into used Yamaha or Takamine. The Taks play and sound nice but they don't project very well.

In general there are two rules for buying any guitar:
- Every guitar is different. Play before you buy.
- You'll get more for your money buying a used instrument instead of new.

What is the cheapest Taylor electric-acoustic guitar?

Tamara S.

A lot of the bands I listen to use a form of a Taylor guitar and I think they sound great! I'm looking for an electric-acoustic guitar or at least one with a cutaway. The only thing is that they're fairly expensive, so what's the cheapest I can get it for, in Canada? Please and thank you!

Answer
With Taylor Guitars, even their low-end guitars are a bit on the expensive side
However, they are totally the best bang for your buck in that price range

The cheapest Taylor guitar that has an electric pickup and a cutaway would be the Taylor 110ce, which costs about $800
The cheapest Taylor guitar is the 110, which starts at about $600
They charge an extra $50 for the pickup, and another $150 for the cutaway.
Unfortunately, they don't make guitars with only a cutaway and no pickup.
I have a Taylor 110e which I got for $650; It has a pickup, but no cutaway. I LOVE my Taylor!

I, myself has been playing for almost a year, and I've learned allot. You should start with strumming, then broken chords, then power chords, then learn how to read tabs.

ADVICE: If you wanna become good in the guitar, you should practice, EVERYDAY. That's what I did. And I learned how to play in 2 months and a half! :)

For guitar lessons, try searching on YouTube on the things I said. Or better, hire a tutor.
Suggestion for the guitar: ANY acoustic might work. Try Seagull S6. This is really for beginners. Or a Yamaha.

Well I don't know any country songs, just search YouTube! :)

Which brand is better - Fender or Epiphone for acoustic guitars?

I was wondering which brand is better - Fender or Epiphone in terms for acoustic guitars because that are kinda in the same price range. Anyone an experienced guitarist?

Answer
Same price range? Do you mean the $199 range or the $899 range? Those two companies make a wide range of guitars.

Your question is like asking "who makes the best running shoe?" Comparing Fender and Epiphone is like comparing Nike to New Balance. Professionals use both and it depends on preferences.

Having said that, it doesn't mean that all guitars in the same price range are the same. You have to consider the details. An acoustic guitar with a solid spruce top will sound better than one with a laminated top.

So, it's hard to generalize. You need to look at the specific guitars. But both Fender and Epi are respected brands.

What kind of guitar stings does the epiphone pr5-e electric acoustic guitar use?

Taylor

Like how big are the strings supposed to be and are they supposed to be regular bronze? Like does anyone know the exact strings or close to the exact strings on the guitar when you first get it? I got a pack and the strings were wayyyy to thick to go in the hole in the headstock and they were light. btw its the Epiphone pr5-e electric acoustic guitar.

Answer
I'll be honest, I'm not sure how you found strings that were way to thick to go through the holes... that doesn't sound right. What kind of strings did you buy? For all guitars, you can more or less change out strings regardless of size and brand. It's mostly just a preference thing. I'm pretty sure they come with D'Addario light gauge strings... if you want them to last longer, grab some EXP ones. They're the coated bronze ones. Some people hate them, others love them. Again, all a preference thing. I personally like the coated D'Addario light gauge ones for my Dean and will onlyyyy use Elixir Polyweb light for my Taylor.

Is learning to play the guitar on your own easy?

I have an acoustic guitar I wish to learn how to play. It comes with 10 DVD videos on how to play the guitar from beginner all the way to more advanced. The question is- How hard is it to learn how to play the guitar by yourself? I can't really afford lessons right now because money is tight but I would love to teach myself how to play if possible.

Answer
I took a few guitar lessons and then I taught myself. Personally I would recommend teaching yourself because you can go at your own pace. If you don't know how to do something you can always look it up on youtube. I didn't really learn notes but I learned to read tablature, or tabs, instead. I'm learning more chords with a guitar chord encyclopedia (very helpful I must say). Have fun!

What's the fastest and most efficient way to improve at guitar and play "cool songs" pleasing to the ear?

e830s

A little background:

So I am a guitar beginner - I can play the chords OK, can sing sometimes when I play simple songs, have decent rhythm, and I still hate bar chords but I'm getting them down OK. One problem though...

Practicing really feels like a chore sometimes (the hard part is just getting my guitar out, once I start it's not so bad) but I wish I could really see myself improving and playing well quicker. I feel like there has to be some advice out there that will "make the difference" in my progress. I bought a Fender instructional DVD for acoustic and it's helped; I've learned some cool things but I think after a while it will get old...

Any teachers/experts out there with some good advice for someone looking to improve in guitar and develop a passion for the instrument?

Answer
Well, a few ideas--

Have you had any professional instruction? Book a few lessons with a good teacher (you can find them in the better music stores--go to the store that sells a full range of band/orchestra/world instruments as well as guitars and amps). If you are making any little mistakes that are slowing you down, the teacher will correct them.

What's your practice routine like? Can you set things up so that your guitar is out on a guitar stand rather than in the case? When you practice, do you do warm-up exercises or just jump in and start strumming songs? Here's my thought: several shorter practices lead to more progress than one long one (exception; at some point you need stamina, and only a long session will give you that). So maybe do a 20-minute practice with short warm-ups and then work on playing some real changes, then break--and do another 20-minute session later, and maybe a 30-minute after that.

Playing chords is fine but for real progress you're going to want scales. Get a copy of Diatonic Major and Minor Scales for Guitar by Andres Segovia and decipher it--all the great shredders play scales according to Segovia--

Alternate your routine often. For example, don't play the song as written--change the rhythms. Play it in 3. Play it all the way through with the first note or chord long, the second one as short as you can make it, third long, fourth short, etc. Then reverse it and play short-long-short-long.

Go to a store that sells fantasy gaming dice and buy a 12-sider and a 6-sider. Throw them both. The 6-sider is the guitar string (1=low E, 2=A, etc.) and the 12-sider is the fret. Name that note. This is the quickest way to learn all the notes on the fingerboard in the first octave.

What strings should I buy for my acoustic guitar?

I have a cheap acoustic guitar that I play once in a while but the strings that I have on it are too thick and hurt my fingers. What type of strings would be recommended for playing songs from bands like All time low, the acadey is, fall out boy etc.

Answer
Well, no matter what type of music you play, you will enjoy playing guitar more if you buy light-grade strings. In my opinion, the brand doesn't really make that much of a difference either. Light or extra-light strings are less thick than conventional strings and still make the same sound.

Some people argue that light strings have a small difference in tone, but if you're a beginner you probably won't even notice it.

If you want to get some nice strings, I recommend Light Elixir strings with Polyweb Coating. Elixir is one of the few guitar string companies where I see a noticeable difference in the tone of the guitar. Also, the Polyweb coating makes it easier to slide on the strings without squeaking.

How can i improve the sound of my acoustic guitar?

nikka

I recently abducted this relatively cheap acoustic guitar made by Silvertone. It's an ok guitar i guess, but from time to time the strings get really "buzzy" or "fuzzy". I'm aware that there are many factors for this "fuzzy" sound but should I replace these stock strings? If so, what strings are recommended?

Answer
Pust D'addario Phosphor bronze strings if you want a good acoustic guitari sound. For the buzzing, that may be due to a need for a neck adjustment.
If you hold the first fret down with the index , and the 15th fret with the other hand, there should be a clearance of 1/8th at the 7th fret between fingerboard and strings.

If the string touches the neck, the truss rod needs to be loosen 1/4 turn counter-clockwise. That should solve the problem. Use the allen key that came with the guitar to do that.

If the string is too far or more than 1/8", you would need to turn the key clockwise 1/4 turn. I doubt that this is the problem. If it buzzes, the truss rod is too tight and needs to be loosen.
