What Electric Guitars are good in my price range for a beginner?

Sammy

I want to buy one for $200-250, maybe I could stretch it to $300. I would like to buy one new, but I might get one used. Im going to learn on it.
(Im not going to learn on acoustic because i know I'll never play it once i get an electric)

What are good quality electric guitars for beginners?
Forgot to mention, I would like it to come with a amp and a case.

Answer
A "good" guitar is one you try out yourself and get along with. You need to go to instrument stores both new AND used and try out different things. See if the store offers some kind of deal like you're looking for with an amp, but that's unlikely. You can get a Squire and amp set sometimes, but other than that you don't usually see a guitar of any quality "paired up" in a sale like that. A Squire might be the right thing for you. But if you want something a little classier, you could look at Strats and Telecasters, or even maybe an Epiphone if you like a more Gibson sound. Remember: used does not mean inferior in quality. In fact since you say you are a beginner it's a better idea to get a used guitar. Why spend more money than you need to when it sounds like you don't plan to stick with you're initial guitar but to "upgrade" in the future or something to that effect?

Yahoo Answers is not the place to ask this advice. Like I said, go out instrument store hopping and ask as many questions as you can of the employees. In my personal experience they are often very helpful. There is no substitute for this. No person who claims they have played guitar for 200 years and know everything is a substitute for doing your own investigative work.

I'm beginning to learn slide guitar. I've played conventional rock guitar for less than two years but acoustic slide blues is really beginning to interest me. I can play simple slide songs like Led Zeppelin's cover of "In My Time of Dying" but I want to go deeper into some dark sounding delta blues.

Who are some blues guitarists (who use Open G tuning) that I should listen to? What are some songs I should check out?

Rachie

I'm 5'1 and my hands are very small. I need a good beginners acoustic guitar for a reasonable price. Also, what size would you suggest for me since my hands cannot fit around a full size guitar? Thanks!

Answer
Rachie,

The best way to find the right guitar is to go and play on several different ones.

You will be safe if you start looking along the lines of a Yamaha, Ibanez, Alvarez, Fender and possibly a Takemine.

I would ask the sale people to assist you in finding acoustics with slim necks, but you will definitely want a full body. Stay away from the small toy guitars.

http://www.all-things-acoustic-guitar.com/beginner-guitar.html covers this topic in depth, as well as many other aspects of the acoustic guitar. You might want to check it out to help in your research.

How to I keep the strings from buzzing when I play chords?

Veronica B

I need help from someone who knows quite a bit about guitars. I'm a beginner and I play the acoustic guitar. I have small hands and a full size guitar. When I press down on the frets, the strings tend to get buzzy and muffled. I need help to figure out how to play the chords smoothly and make a transition!

Answer
Any number of factors could be at play here. However, assuming your guitar is a good one, with a true neck, easy action, correct string height and smooth, well-placed frets, and that the neck is not too wide for you (or too narrow), the problem probably lies in how you're positioning your hands and fingers when you attempt to play the offending chords.

One thing I always stress with people (especially kids) I teach is to use their whole arm to form chords. If you stay loose at the shoulder, elbow, wrist AND fingers, forming chords is much easier. For instance, if a chord feels hard to make because your fingers are coming at it from the side and are muting other strings, try rocking your elbow forward so your fingers are coming down more of top of the strings. Don't try to work from a rigid hand, stay loose. Try variations on this theme to see if it might help.

Often chords are sloppy when you're first learning them. Sound each note of the chord to make sure it's resonating clearly. If it's muffled, adjust your hand (or other body part) accordingly to correct the situation. Once you get the hang of the chord form, it'll come easier and will sound like it's supposed to sound. I know you've heard it before but patience and practice are the only keys to progress. Keep at it.

What is the difference between playing acoustic guitar and 6 string bass?

best acoustic guitar players of all time image

NickHighwi

I am an acoustic guitar player, but I have been looking at playing 6 string bass. I know the difference between the guitars, I want to know the difference between the playing style.

Answer
Do you mean a full-scale six-string bass, or a bass VI like the old Fender bass VI or the Schecter Hellcat VI? A bass VI has a 30" scale, tuned E-e one octave below a standard guitar, and close string spacing. You can play it pretty much like a standard guitar but if you try to strum standard open chords on it, you'll sound godawfully muddy - much better played fingerstyle. Listen to old Ventures songs, and early Cream - Jack Bruce used one on the first album.

A six-string bass usually has a 34-35" scale and is tuned B-E-A-D-G-C, with that B way down where the bottom end of a piano keyboard is. I haven't tried, but it would be a nightmare to try to finger standard guitar chords across it and would sound like a thunderstorm rather than music to strum all six strings. You can play it quite effectively with any normal bass technique - finger, pick, or slap. The middle four strings are the same as a standard bass guitar, the extra two strings just give you more range and flexibility. They're popular in jazz settings especially where people want to play more melodic lines running up the C string. You can play them chordally but it's nothing like strumming along on an acoustic guitar. You really have to use bass guitar technique, there's not too much resemblance to guitar technique other than that it has strings and frets.

How to make your finger change chords faster in acoustic guitar?

lee

I'm a new acoustic guitar player. I don't have lessons i already knew the chords but my fingers aren't fast or good enough to change chords? Is their any chords that is good enough to make my finger change like a and d chords?

Answer
Practice, practice, practice.

Right now, you're still learning chords, so you have to slowly and laboriously place...each...finger on the right strings, hope you're not inadvertently muting open strings, and hope you're pressing hard enough.

The only way to get faster at changing chords is to develop muscle memory in your left hand, so that the chord shapes become so familiar that you can just think "D chord" or whatever, and your fingers automatically know where to go.

But the only way to develop that muscle memory is through sheer repetition -- forming different chord shapes and switching between them over and over and over and over and over and....so on.

Practice, practice, practice.

bobby b

I have never played guitar before so i'm not lookin for anything too expensive, but was wondering what a good brand would be, or a good price range to look in. thanks

Answer
Congratulations on being interested in learning to play and
willing to attend classes on a regular basis. It does take commitment.
My experience (at a college level) with courses for guitar is that the recommended instrument is an acoustic
(No Electric) guitar. - The obvious reason:
You need an amplifier to play it

There are many acoustic guitars - nylon strings and steel strings - available in the market that can be purchase for under $200. They all probably have a laminated-top (better expensive guitars have a "solid" wood top) but they are well
made and are less prone to damage due to temperature changes.
I happen to favor classical (nylon strings) guitars since I like
to play the melody part of the music (vs just chords) and I can read music. In the nylon strings guitar the fingers are used
almost always (no picks). This type of guitar is suitable for
classical, folk and jazz type of music but you can really play any kind you want. The sound from the classical guitars is
"mellower" than the sound from the steel-string guitar.
The nylon strings are also "easier" on your fingers.

The steel-strings guitars (tuned the same way as the nylon
strings) have a narrower neck and fret board. Their body
(acoustic box) is larger is size than the classical type and
therefore the sound also is a bit "louder" and "brighter" (due
to the steel-strings) than the dassical.
This guitar is preferred by players that mostly play chords and
simple strumming. The majority of this players use a "pick"
on this type of guitar. Like the classical you can play anything
on this guitar. Many folk and jazz players also use this type of
instrument.
As far as "brand" I can only speak for the ones I have used.
For under $200. you can get a good instrument from :
Alvarez,Washburn, Yamaha, Takamine (Jasmine) , Woods,
Valencia. There are other good major brands like Taylor,
Gibson, Ibanez, etc. but I have no experience with them and
cannot tell you about "value" on their instrument.
Whatever you do make sure you try playing or "feeling" the
instrument and see if it "fits" you in size as well as comfort.

If you are a small person or have small hands/short fingers
consider an instrument on the smaller scale than 25.6"
Just like shoes - one size does not fit all -
Full size guitars are made with a scale-length of about 25.6"
(650mm) and sometimes this create problems for some players.
A scale-lenght is the string distance from the Nut to tthe Bridge saddle of the guitar)
It has nothing to do with the total size (length) of the guitar.

Guitars are made shorter (7/8, 3/4, 5/8, 1/2) to suit the player. The scale lenght of those instrumants are a bit shorter that the full 4/4 size guitar. Check around the web for sellers
like Musician's Friends for more details on the guitars.

Good Luck in your new musical career. Enjoy

I'm looking for an affordable 3/4 sized acoustic (preferably classical) guitar for a beginner. I've looked into getting a Baby Taylor, but I'm seeing a few mixed reviews. Any guitarists out there that would suggest this guitar or another one for a novice?

Answer
You can check out LUna guitars. They are affordable, original, big sound, and very good action. We tried some at the shop and they sounded big for the size and they are very original.

Here is a link and well worth checking.
http://www.lunaguitars.com/

As for Taylor. It is a good guitar no doubt but to say it is better than Gibosn J-50 is far fetched and the same when compared to a Martin. Let's be honest. Give what belongs to Caesar. Gibsons and Martin are up there in quality and the fact that we use those names to compare to others proves a point.

Check on e-bay for Taylors at a cheap price. I wonder why their are so many for sale and nobody keeps them ???

I originally wanted to buy a cheaper acoustic guitar for 200$ but I saw this guitar for a sale and thought maybe in the long run I would want this guitar and wouldn't have to buy a new one in a couple of years.
I have played on a guitar before so I am not completely unfamiliar. Should I stick with the buying the acoustic or buying this one.

Answer
Hi Webhwith,

I used to have my own guitar shop for about 30 years where I taught private students and sold guitars for a living and I always told my students to buy whichever type of guitar would excite them the most to own because they will play it more and get better faster. Since you can afford either the acoustic or the electric guitar get the one that you'll want to pick up and play the most. Hope this helps!

I think its a good idea to take lessons from a real person to make sure you get a solid foundation.
Some basic things you'll want to learn are:
Names of the strings
"Open" Chords
Notes of the frets (at least the first 5 frets)

Learn these things and you'll be well on your way. Have Fun!

There are lots of great websites and youtube videos for learning guitar. But u have to stay away from those videos, for they can not teach u from the beginning to the end. While some have value, a lot of those really don't have much substance. If a guitar book with video lessons is supposed to be helpful for u, such as jamorama. It teachers learners according to their levels, offering pictures and videos and explaining very clearly. U can have a look at of it. Good luck!

Ideally, I don't want to spend more than $400.

Any suggestions?

I bought a black acoustic guitar about 4 years ago for about $100. It is made by S101. When I bought it and I took a few lesson then stop but recently started to take lessons again (about 3 months ago) and it I think it sounds good for a beginner guitar. While I am waiting on my teacher I sit around the music shop and play other more expensive acoustics and I think my sounds as good. Here is a link to one on ebay.

Justin

I plan on doing some recording in the future and I would like some advice on the different aspects of doing home recordings.

What is the best environment? (Size of room, composition of walls, echo/reverb, etc.)

What is the best equipment? (Microphones, computer recording station, software) I'll be recording vocals, acoustic guitar, piano and various electric instruments.

I've been using Adobe Audition which works great but I'm curious as to what the alternatives are and what are their pros and cons.

Answer
For the basics on setting up a home recording studio, check out this article: http://www.articlecube.com/Article/How-To-Build-A-Home-Recording-Studio/49379
Once you've read this, you'll have a nice foundation. Audition is a nice program and can achieve professional results like many other multitrack recording software programs out there. However, I recommend getting a copy of Pro Tools as your main recording software for a few reasons. First, it is the industry standard in recording. Many major label records have been recorded on Pro Tools. Second, it's easy to use and there's plenty of support an tutorials available on the market to get you up an running in no time (see: http://cgi.ebay.com/Brainwerks-PRO-TOOLS-7-LE-M-Powered-HD-Tutorial-Video_W0QQitemZ260085583899QQihZ016QQcategoryZ41786QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem ) Third, it's easily portable to other studios that have Pro Tools (and many studios do!). This gives you the ability to record a session at home with your guitar and piano; save that session to disk; go to another studio with a nice drum and vocal room (if you choose) and pull the same session up on Pro Tools and add those elements. Then, you can take that session home to arrange and mix your project. Or you could send your Pro Tools session to professional mix engineer, to have it mixed. The sky's the limit. The problem with other programs like Audition is that not as many studios use it (even though it's a good program) so being able to transfer Audition sessions from studio to studio many not be as easy, because that studio will need to have Audition installed on their system (which many studios don't). Another great point to add is that you can now get Pro Tools for around $250, making it very affordable for anyone who wants to put together a home studio. http://www.homerecorder.com/products/software/recording/protoolsmpowered.html
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Is playing an electric guitar just like playing an acoustic one?

Karla Soph

I already know how to play the acoustic guitar and i'm planning on getting an electric one.

Answer
That all depends on what your going to be playing. There are some things that some electric guitar players do that acoustic players don't. For instance, there are things like bends pulls and slides that are used to take full advantage of plug-in effects like distortion, overdrive, tremolo, echo, reverb, etc.

But, if you consider yourself a good acoustic player and you really enjoy playing, getting a good guitar and a decent amp will do you good even if you're only going to play basic chords on it. If you want to get into hard rock or heavy metal style riffs, there are plenty of good resources available online. Remember, playing the guitar is a lot of fun if you put some effort into it, and if you get REALLY good you can upgrade to a nice rig with all sorts of settings. My current setup is a Fender Telecaster custom going into a Crate amp stack and then a mixer that powers big speakers. I wanted something like this from the day I first brought home my first acoustic, but first I pressed myself to get decent at playing.

Good Luck!

Can I engrave something into an acoustic guitar?

best acoustic guitar luthiers image

Cynthia Lo

I want to get an acoustic guitar for my boyfriend for our one year anniversary and I was wondering if I could engrave something into it?? And if so where can I do it?

Answer
In order:

1) don't do it cuz damage to the guitar is possible.
2) if you must do it, back of the HEADSTOCK not back of the neck
3) make sure a professional luthier does it. He will tell you NOT to do it!
4) try this instead: get a custom made trussrod cover and engrave that. You can get a brass one or a 14k gold one and take it anywhere to get it engraved. then just swap out the old cover for the new one
These guys will make a custom inlaid pearl trussrod cover... cool!
http://www.luthiersupply.com/pearltrussrodcoverpage.html

5) maybe get him a box of custom guitar picks with his name on them instead. Easier, cheaper, less prone to damaging an instrument
6) maybe a custom guitar strap
7) Also... guitars are like shoes. They have to fit. Its a very personal choice in sound and playability. Don't just surprise him, find out what guitar he likes. A good guitar is NOT cheap. If your budget is less than $400 just don't do it at all. That would be the price of a few very select entry level acoustic guitars that aren't total junk. Generally you really dont start talking about decent acoustic guitars till you are in the neighborhood of $1000 for a killer deal on a new one, or $400-500 for a used one that used to be $1000 new.

One exception to the prices above: Luna guitars are very cost effective and nice. They are the $400 exception I was talking about.

Is nut height an action factor on acoustic guitar?

Digital Ag

I bought for peanuts a 12-string acoustic guitar that needs some work...glue a nut back on for example.....I think I did that once for a classical guitar and it wasn't difficult...is it? What's the best glue to use?

Answer
Action height is very dependent on the string height off the first fret. This is adjusted by cutting the slots to the correct depth on the nut. It should be done by a professional luthier.
Do not use epoxy. It is common to have to replace/adjust the nut. If you epoxy it there may be damage to neck/fingerboard getting it back out. Use Elmer's Titebond or a similar glue. Do not use much.
At a guess, I would say the nut is probably cut correctly now. To check it. String the guitar (putting the nut in but not gluing it yet), tune it up, and try it. If you don't get fret buzz and it's not too difficult pushing the strings down to the first fret, you should be OK. Loosen the strings up (a lot - this might get a little messy) slide the nut out, coat the inside of the nut slot with Titebond, and put the nut back. Try not to slide it back in, if you can so as not to push the glue out. You might try it first dry to see if you can do it (see if the strings are loose enough).
Hint: I always down tune my twelve string acoustics one note (D instead of E) to make them easier to play and relieve a bit of that pressure on the neck. It is very common for twelve string necks to warp.

Can I engrave something into an acoustic guitar?

How much does an acoustic Fender guitar cost?

Q. I am wondering what the price range of a "fender" acoustic guitar is? my friend has one and she tells me it's about $1000 but that she got it cheap. how much would it cost for me to buy from a music store?

Answer

I can get a BRAND NEW Fender Acoustic for less than 500 of your US Dollars.

What is the advantage of getting a beginner acoustic guitar?

I'm about to buy an acoustic guitar online and I noticed that there are beginner guitars and adult sized guitars. the guitar that I really want is an adult sized but, since I'm a beginner, I was wondering if i really need to start out on a beginner instead.

Answer
Stacey, beginner is not a size.

The only advantage of a beginner guitar is that if you give up in six months, you didn't dump 500+ bucks down the drain.

Other than that, they are 'inferior' instruments.

But don't get too caught up on that. In six months to a year, if you are looking to keep playing (I hope you will be) you will have enough experience to begin to appreciate the differences in more expensive guitars. At that point, get yourself a good mass-produced job (300-500 bucks) and pass that beginner guitar on to a niece or nephew or friend's kid.

What's the difference between beginners guitar and regular guitar?

Q. Okay, so I'm looking to purchase an acoustic guitar online and I'm noticing that some guitars have "beginners" next to it while others don't. I'm somewhat new to guitars not really, but I don't know if I'd consider myself a beginner. Is there really a difference between the two? If so, then what?

Answer
There is nothing that makes a guitar a "beginner" guitar other than price and quality. A beginner might want to buy a very cheap guitar if he's not sure he's going to stick with it. The problem is, a cheap guitar can discourage a beginner because of it's bad tone and hard action. You can get a very nice guitar for $300, suitable for a beginner, yet something you can be proud to own for many years (See link). The cheap guitars are for kids. I had a cheap Harmony guitar when I was 7. I loved it and learned on it. Around age 12 I knew it was time to upgrade. That's when I bought my first inexpensive but decent guitar. Good luck.

What kind of guitar should I buy for playing The Beatles Music?

good acoustic guitar for beginners uk image

I am looking to buy a guitar because I feel like I waste my time on Xbox and Facebook, and i wanna be able to always be around something I love in my life, music. I am planning on learning all of my favorite band's songs, The Beatles. I love all their songs and I want to be able to play them. Could you refer me to a type and style guitar that would be best suited for playing Beatles Music? Also, could you give me some beginner tips or some videos on how to learn this stuff? Thanks so much!

Answer
Well, if you're just learning how to play guitar, i would suggest starting with an acoustic. If this is the case, you can buy a variety of "starter packs" from pretty much any music store. My first was a Fender acoustic beginner package for about $100 bucks and i loved that guitar. If you don't have a budget, get a Taylor, theres nothing like it. anyways if you're past the acoustic phase here is a list of guitars George Harrison used with the Beatles:

Gretsch Duo Jet
Gretsch Country Gentleman
Gretsch Tennessean
Rickenbacker 360/12(GEorge used 2 different ones)
Rickenbacker 325
Gibson SG(later given to Pete Hamm of Badfinger)
Gibson Jumbo 360 acoustic/electric guitar
Epiphone Casino
Gibson Les Paul(a red one called Lucy)
Gibson ES-345(used during the We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper promo films,as well as the last UK tour)
Fender Stratocaster
Fender Telecaster

Good luck! good to hear someone still has a passion for music and not just for games and Facebook!

what is the difference between an elavation guitar and stratocaster guitar?

evian

My son has guitar lessons and his teacher has said he is ready for a stratocaster guitar, I know nothing about guitars so please help. Elevation seem much cheaper but look the same and seem to offer pretty much the same. Any advise would be helpful. Thank you

Answer
I cannot seem to see the logic in saying that someone is ready for a particular guitar. the only real difference is tone, and playability. the only real thing that is not for beginners is a floyd rose bridge, but thats not the issue in this case. also, certain styles are made easier by particular guitars. for example players who love to play at a million miles per hour prefer thinner necks.

heres a link for an elevation brand guitar, is this the one you are talking about? and in my opinion it is a strat.

Fender only has the trademark to the headstock so essentially everyone makes a strat knockoff. officially branded starts will be by either fender or squier their subsidiary.

so back to the question. the guitar world is a complex web of price vs performance. usually a good compromise can be found. For example a squier Strat is a stratocaster per se, but craftsmanship will be lower than a more expensive fender counterpart. There will be differences in basically everything. Hardware, wood, and fretwork will suffer on the student guitars.

also, all this hinges upon what your son is playing on now. If it is an acoustic, than i see where the teacher is going. If he is playing on an inexpensive student guitar than perhaps he just means its time to upgrade to a more playable guitar?

ultimately in basically all large guitar brands you get what you pay for. There are smaller house brands out there that do offer much better bang for your buck. The only issue with these is you have to know what you are looking at, otherwise you will be worse off. two smaller brands that i absolutely whole heartedly trust are Agile, and Raven West Guitars. Their management really stands behind their product.

expect to pay more than 200. 300 will get you a very usable intermediate guitar. so is your son really ready for a $300 guitar?

if exact models in question were shown it would be infinitely easier to offer advice. currently i am just probing in the dark.

good luck

I want to learn how to play a guitar, but i don't want to buy a really expensive one or really cheap one. Where can I buy an acoustic guitar for beginners and how much would it cost?

And is it hard to play? I already play the violin and piano.
How long do you think it would take to be ok at it? Do you think being self-taught would be ok?

Answer
$199 for a decent starter steel-string acoustic

You need to learn and practice the chords and hand positions.

It takes practice to get used to it. You get calluses on your fingers. But that's part of it.

You'll be fine being self-taught. But you have to practice correct habits before they become bad. There are a lot of YouTube videos. Practice songs you like, look up chords @ http://www.ultimate-guitar.com. Also learn how to read tabs.

It really helps to practice with songs you know because you know the tempo and how it sounds. It takes a lot of patience and practice everyday. You'll do fine.

What are some really good but cheap acoustic guitars for beginners?

Ms. Pengui

I'm looking to buy an acoustic guitar, but I'm feeling really overwhelmed with all of the choices. I want to start out cheap now then upgrade to something better in a few years. I'd like to buy one that is around $100, but I'm willing to consider some that are around $200 (but not over) since good guitars might be hard to find under $100. I'm not looking for stores to buy from, just the names of some good beginner acoustic guitars.

Answer
there is no such thing as a "really good" cheap guitar. you can get a decent entry level guitar for under $200.00, but you need to be careful, as these are mass produced and probably one out of ten has issues straight from the factory. If you already know how to play, make sure there are no dead spots, and that the neck is not warped or in dire need of a set up. If you do not already play, find someone who does that you trust to help you pick one out.

After working at a guitar store for 10 years, I'd say Yamaha or Epiphone is your best bet for an entry level acoustic guitar.

I started playing a week ago, on an acoustic, and I already know all the major chords and a lost of minors, and I can play them well. I also just learned "Stay Together For The Kids" by Blink 182. What is the cheapest, decent capo for a Yamaha acoustic guitar?

best acoustic guitar capo image
Q. I am looking for a cheap, decent guitar capo for my Yamaha acoustic guitar.

Answer
Hiya
I always recommend the G7th capo. Its quite expensive but the only one you'll ever need.
As stated, cheaper ones can pull the strings of your guitar and make it go out of tune. The G7th is simple to use and will last a lifetime.

What is good capo for my acoustic guitar? Easy 10 Points!?

Sean

I have a Yamaha FG700S acoustic guitar.

I am thinking about the Dunlop Trigger Capo or the Kyser quick change capo.

Also would my guitar be best with a curved or flat capo?

Answer
Flat capos are for classical guitars, which have flat fretboards. Modern steel-string guitars have curved fretboards.

The thing about spring-operated trigger capos like the Kyser is that you can't change the pressure on them. If there's too much pressure, your strings may be pulled a bit sharp. However, they can be moved very quickly if you need to do that during a song.

Many people like a cam type capo with variable pressure like the Shubb (which is favored by many professional players). For those on a tight budget or worried about having heavy droppable little chunks of metal near their guitars (a personal phobia of mine), there's the cam-operated Dunlop Picker's Pal.

Or there are elastic-band capos made by Dunlop - they're cheap and have variable pressure, but are slow to operate and can pull the strings out of tune sideways.

It's pretty much a tradeoff between price, being able to put a capo on quickly, and playing in tune. I think the cam types strike the best balance, but YMMV.
