Finger exercise. you must do it to play solos and licks. Then play a scale through out the fretboard, for example cmaj7 and get familiar with every notes through out the fretboard, and get flexible with your fingers. To play licks go to any guitar teacher, who can show you a lot of licks otherwise download videos of licks. there are thousand of them. But you must know at least these scales, let it be the starter. E minor, A minor , B minor , C maj , D maj , E maj....go through the scales and practice real hard and listen to lot of songs. After being familiar about those scales and licks, try to frame melodies in your mind and play it. go slowly. at first make simple melody lines. Then try to add a lick into it. Then play a progression of chords (you can arpeggio or you can just play with rhythm)and record it.for example play this progression Amaj Dmaj Emaj. Then try to play solo with it . for this progression you can play with Amaj7 scale/E7 scale/D lydian scale....but as a beginner play with A maj7 scale.

there is a lot of things to say. I can't tell everything here. Practice hard bro. Real hard.

Do you want a real guitar to learn on, or a toy?

If the first, you will still be putting in at the very least $100. Buying a Wal-Mart guitar will discourage a child from wanting to play, those guitars are set up entirely wrong, as cheap as possible, and sound awful. They are not in any way good for learning on. Go to GuitarCenter to find some decent guitars.

If you just want a toy, go to Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or any retail store.

I´d say there are many awesome songs for acoustic guitar. Personally, i´d choose Classical Gas from Eric Clapton, Dust in the Wind from Kansas, I´m Yours from Jason Mraz, Your Body Is A Wonderland from John Mayer, Paradise City from Guns ´n´ Roses, and many songs from Jack Johnson are very good for acoustic guitar like "Flake". In Spanish, cause that´s my native language, I´d choose, La Flaca from Jarabe de Palo.

You need to learn and practice the chords and hand positions.

It takes practice to get used to it. You get calluses on your fingers. But that's part of it.

You'll be fine being self-taught. But you have to practice correct habits before they become bad. There are a lot of YouTube videos. Practice songs you like, look up chords @ http://www.ultimate-guitar.com. Also learn how to read tabs.

It really helps to practice with songs you know because you know the tempo and how it sounds. It takes a lot of patience and practice everyday. You'll do fine.

Hey There!
Well to begin with you want to be learning to play small riffs, or the basic chords to a song so you can play along with it.

For example when I began playing I learnt to read tab and then searched all the basic guitar chords (A,B,C,D,E,F,G & Am,Bm,Cm,Dm,Em,Fm,Gm) "m means minor". Once I had learnt these I began playing small songs such as the "james bond" riff.. Or something like (Smoke on the water - deep purple)

i find for me.. as a beginner its soo much easier to learn a song when its one I really like.. I wanna perfect it.. so I practice it a lot .. lol

When i was 18 i wanted to play the guitar. I somehow managed to get a very cheap acoustic guitar (gift) for like 50 bucks form Lidl (crappy quality). After 1 year i got the time to get busy with it, but like learning songs from youtube tutorials, nothing like theory or basic notes, just copy what i saw. A friend of mine in my hometown( i study away of home now) learn to play with a teacher and within 2 years he can play some songs by ear. I tried to get some lessons from a friend of mine but it was a dissapointment for a lot of reasons. So now I am about to earn 1000 bucks and i really want to invest them in electric guitar lessons because i am really into metal and the acoustic gutiar just doesn't fit me( that's one reason why i abbandon it, except maybe the crappy quality, dont know a lot about quality guitars either so i couldnt tell the difference ). So with 1000 euros in my pocket i want to go serious because air guitar isnt enough. I want to get a teacher and some equipment but i dont know how much of those money should i spend, as i dont want to spend all of them because i have some rent to pay. So what i am asking is what kind of guitar should i buy (price variety 200-300) and amps and how much the teacher would cost me( i have heard even one day a week is enough). I want personal teacher not music school as i am a little old to go to that kind of school. It is certain that i will practice hard if i get into it, the difficult thing for me is the begging and the investment of the money. I want a decent guitar( so i want buy another one later) and also amps for which i dont know nothing :) I want to hear your recommendations. I have a decent metal voice so with the guitar i would be the most happy person in the world as music is my entirely life (by ear):D

Is an acoustic guitar safe to check on a flight?

I want to bring my acoustic guitar with me on my trip to Jersey from Michigan. Is my guitar going to be safe in a regular unpadded guitar case? Or are they going to throw it around and damage it? It's a $700 Takamine that I bought a few months ago, I would hate to risk it's life!

I would certainly not check a nice Takamine on a flight in an unpadded case. A few years back I was permitted to take my Ibanez a/e on board and the flight crew was courteous enough to put it in the coat closet where it was secure there. I just picked it up on my way out of the aircraft during deplaning.

I would highly recommend getting at least a soft-padded gig bag for your Takamine.

Will a First Act guitar sell at a flea market?

I'm going to the flea market soon to make extra cash for a Telecaster kit I'm saving up for. Will anyone buy a used First Act MG521 Acoustic Guitar at a flea market? I know First Act is junk, but I was figuring if I included a strap and some picks to sweeten the deal, maybe I could get $20 or $25 for it. Is that an unreasonable to think someone will buy it, and for that amount of money?

I have Ibanez, Gibson, Schecter, and Martin, and I was surprised that my very first guitar, a First Act guitar, sounds as good as the Martin I spent nearly a thousand dollars to buy.

Some First Act guitars are junk, I've seen others that were better than the Gibson and Epiphone that cost a hundred dollars more. Take it into a Guitar shop and let them strum it and see what they think it works. Adding a strap and picks isn't going to sweeten the deal, new strings might be better.

I've puchased guitars at yard sales and flea markets for pennies on the dollar and resold them at a profit after I cleaned them up and put new strings on them, tuned them and let others hear the sweet sound that came from them.
I've also purchased cheap guitars for parts for others, to make my own and mix and match.
I don't think it is unreasonable to expect 20 to 50 depending on the condition of the guitar and if you have it playable.

You would be surprised the nice quality guitar you can get for $150 (often less!) if you look in the right places. First, skip the music store and the idea of a brand new one. If your local store has a rental dept, see if they will sell rentals. they are often much cheaper then the ones on the wall.

But to really get a great deal, check on Craigslist and your local old fashioned print paper's classifieds under items for sale. Some have a musical instrument section. Also, and this is the best if you can do it, look for estate sales in the paper or auctions. I have found some of the best playing, best sounding, cheapest priced acoustic guitars at these places. These people usually know nothing about the value and just want to get rid it along with the rest of their stuff.

Final note. The thing about acoustic guitars is that price does not always dictate your love of the instrument. You need to play it. If it's comfortable for you, sounds good to you, then buy it! Don't just head for the most expensive one. I have an old Gibson I found at a yard sale for $15 a few years back. It is the one I play almost everyday at home now. I just love the feel and sound of it! I have another one I bought new (Alvarez) that I gig with. I don't like it but it's got the pick ups in it so I use it. Good Luck!

They're both electric acoustic. altomusic is the only place that has the Takamine this cheap, It's $250 on one and over $400 on most other sites. Ibanez is the same everywhere though. Is buying the Takamine a better deal, or is something wrong with this one? I'm leaning towards it because it looks great and the supposed savings. I have some basic knowledge, I'm a beginner so knowing nothing about guitars, I'm asking which should I get?

Neither. They're both all-plywood guitars (if it doesn't say SOLID wood, it isn't. The wood used for the top layer makes no difference to the sound - plywood is plywood), with electronic capabilities that a beginner doesn't need. An acoustic-electric guitar is meant for performers who frequently need to amplify the instrument and want the convenience of being able to plug it in directly. Electronics are sometimes included on entry-level guitars as a selling point, but serve little useful purpose. By the time you reach the stage of giving frequent public performances, you will have outgrown a plywood guitar.

You can buy a guitar with a solid spruce top, which is far superior to plywood, for $200 - check out the highly regarded Yamaha FG-700S and FS-700S.

Buy your guitar in person at a guitar store if at all possible, after making sure it feels comfortable in your hands and is easy to play.

Is Bridecraft a good brand for acoustic guitar?

Bridgecraft is a make known for being low-end, which means cheap. Not only price, perhaps, but also the way they are made and put together. I wouldn't give them time of day, not a bit.

If you are starting out or not, don't you agree that it's best to go for a guitar that is reliable and is well made? Sure you do.

Me? I could never see a time when i would buy a guitar on line unless it was a known good make from a known good supplier, or a collector's model, vintage guitar. We need to know what we're getting up front, and trust the information.

By known good make, I mean Gibson, Fender, Martin, and more.


It also depends how much you want to pay. I wouldn't recommend paying less than a few hundred even for a starter guitar. Acoustic or electric, I regard "cheap" as, say, $300 and under. So, preferably more than that.

Best thing: go to a music store. Try out the cheapest guitars. Then go to the expensive ones ($1700 and up). See the difference and find out what you're prepared to go with.

Some good guitars are around $500-700. Try second hand models if you can't go that high, but get someone who knows guitars to go with you. They will know what to watch for (bad frets, chinese slipper necks, loose bits, missing bits, etc.) and you'll get some knowledge from them.

Try to find a store where they treat you as they should a new player. Where they will set the guitar up for you cheap or free, because most of the time, even a new $3000 guitar needs setting up. If they don't do that, walk out the door and go where they do.

I don't really need anything fancy, I just want to know which kind suits best for an intermediate player. I want something with sort of a bright tone and that is high quality. Of the ones you listed, only Taylor bears consideration. Fender acoustic guitars are awful; Ibanez are better but not nearly in a class with Taylor. Gibson charges an obscene amount of money for really mediocre acoustic guitars.

Right now the best bargains to be had in intermediate acoustic guitars are Eastman guitars. They're a little hard to find but their web site has a dealer locator.

If you can spend more, get a McPherson, Goodall, Santa Cruz, or Froggy Bottom.

Is it advisable to change my acoustic guitar's heavy gauge strings straight to light ones?

I've just acquired a cheap acoustic guitar. It has heavy strings on it (13s, I believe), but I wanna put 10s on it. The action is fairly high. Will this cause any problems?

It should not cause any problems and if anything it will solve problems. Most acoustic guitars are not braced for heavy gauge strings. However it's not a guarantee than the action will improve as a result. If it's still too high then take your guitar to a good tech for adjustment.

I just need to know how big you'd have to be (height and weight) to play a full sized electric guitar. Also, does it matter if you start playing on the electric or acoustic? Should I get a cheaper or a more high quality guitar?

What You might consider is the weight of the instrument. Ivanez is a much lighter guitar than a Les Paul(very heavy.) Electric guitars have much lighter strings and will not hurt your fingers as badly. I would actually suggest that you learn on an accoustic. , you'll build callouses quicker. Dean makes a good guitar, you may want to check out a dean Evo, or a dean Vendetta. Ivanez makes a good cheap accoustic. What is the best brand of acoustic guitar? (Under 200 or dollars?)?

I know 200$ is kinda cheap, but its all I can afford right now. I know that Gibson and Fender are the best brands, but I just want a good, full sized acoustic guitar. I already play, so I don't want like a beginner guitar or anything.

What kind of camcorder should i get?

I want to record short skits about 10-20 minutes in length, and songs with a vocal and acoustic guitar. I am a complete amateur so I am looking for something that works quite intuitively and that will be easy to upload to my computer so I can place these videos on youtube. I am planning on buying a separate mic(looking at canon WM-VI). I've read that mini dv cameras are the way to go as far as quality and price are concerned, but they don't seem to be very common at best buy, and I worry they won't be as easy to upload and edit on my computer. I'd like to spend less than $800 for the camcorder alone.


Side inquiry- I am planning on buying a macbook pro for video editing. Hoping I can just figure it out as i go along, is this naive?
