what is the best acoustic guitar brand? for beginners?

Jaci K

Answer
I think Taylor makes the best acoustic guitars, they are excellent, but for beginners i think Washburn would be a good choice, either that or Takamine.

Acoustic Guitar Brand?!?!?

iluvhollis

What's a good acoustic guitar brand 4 a 12-year-old boy who wants to get one for his guitar elective?!?!

Answer
I play classical guitar, and I recommend for beginners, especially a 12 year old boy an acoustic Yamaha, they have them at the Guitar Center for $200.00 dollars and even less on sale, and if you ask the clerks they are very good at giving you a deal, if you ask !!!!! Yamaha has really made a nice guitar for that price, I know I've played and bought one for myself to play with students, I couldn't believe how nice they sounded, but make sure to play them all as they all have a different sound and action, make sure that the strings are not to hard to push down, (that there not too high off the fingerboard). And make sure that there are not buzzes when you play the notes, go up and down the fingerboard and make sure that they all sound clear....with no buzz !!!!!
Good luck....great hobby for a twelve year old, if he sticks with it it will keep him busy, and out of trouble !!!!!!!!!

To keep it simple, we're recommending a few good starter guitar/amp packages that are inexpensive and come with everything you need to begin playing...including instructional books or DVDs.

We've offered a few options, so that you have a few different prices to consider, and some choice in terms of looks and shapes. All of these are great for beginner, so you really can't go wrong. See which ones your local music store offers or Google them on-line to see what they look like and who will give you the best deal.

What's so special about the Les Paul Special II Player Pack? The super-low price for starters (around $199), and that's not all. This package also includes an Epiphone Studio 10 amplifier with 10W power through an 8" Electar Labs speaker; rugged gig bag; instructional video; super-accurate quartz tuner; plus a strap, cable, and picks to put it all together.

This Squier Stop Dreaming, Start Playing guitar and amp package ($199) includes a Squier SE Special Strat and a SP-10 combo amp, plus an instrument cable, electronic tuner, instructional DVD, guitar stand, gig bag, and pick assortment.

The Squier SE Special Strat Electric Guitar combines 3 single-coils and 5-way switching for great tonal range. It also has a solid agathis body with shell pickguard, 21-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot position inlays, die-cast chrome tuners, and standard fulcrum tremolo bridge.

The Squier SP-10 amp controls include volume, treble, bass, and an overdrive on/off button that delivers tube-like tone. A headphone output allows silent practice. 10 watts drive a 6" speaker and the amp has a tough textured vinyl exterior.

Street Price: around $249

best guitar for beginner?

Lynny

ok, I am 13 years old, female, and I want to play a guitar. I really have no idea about guitar facts... so please help me and here is a list of questions:

1. for a beginner, which is better, classical or acoustic guitar? (yes, I am that clueless)
2. if so, which brand would be best BUT i dont want a very expensive one in case i stop. (I learned that nylon strings are the best for beginners??)

thanks for taking your time to help me! :)

Answer
Hi, and congratulations on joining the 6-string community. I will try to give you some general info on picking a good starter guitar but it is worth noting that there is no "best" guitar nor is there a "best" way to learn--quite simply guitars are getting better and cheaper and, since there are new people taking up the instrument every day there are literally thousands of ways to approach the instrument. That said there are 2 main families of guitar: Electric and Accoustic. Both options you mentioned are accoustic guitars. Classical guitar and it's related cousin, the Flamenco guitar, use nylon strings which don't put as much tension on the instument and therefore it can be made with lighter bracing. Classical and Flamenco guitars usually have a wider neck with the strings set further apart from each other to make it easier to play each string individually with your fingers. Additionally, the strings are higher off the fretboard (the height of the strings affects how difficult it is to press them down and is usually called the "action" of the guitar. Low action makes it easier to play, high action makes the guitar louder and, with enough technique, the notes sound more clearly) Nylon strings are easier on the fingers of both the fretting hand and the playing hand but most beginners find the wider and thicker neck of the classical/flamenco to be a bit of a chore to work with. "Regular" accoustic guitars are strung with metal strings (usually called "steel strings" despite the fact that they are usually made of bronze wound around a steel core) and are easier and cheaper to find than nylon. Additionally, nylon strings require actually being tied onto the bridge (the part that holds the strings on the body of the guitar) and take a long time to stretch out and settle in to their tuning. I have a lot of guitars and have found that sitting down with an absolute beginner and running through various types they ineveitably gravitate towards the electric. Solid-body electric guitars are cheap, plentiful, durable and can be practiced like an accoustic but MUCH more quietly as well as through headphones or an amplifier. If you just want to learn whether you have an aptitude for guitar I would suggest visiting a music store and explaining that you are planning to purchase your first guitar soon and could they show you entry-level Classical, accoustic steel-string and solidbody electric guitars. Electrics have slimmer necks that are more comfortable. They also use lighter-guage strings that are a good compromise between the stiff steel string accoustics and compliant but finicky nylon. Another factor to consider is scale-length. A shorter-scale guitar will be easier on you. A fantastic brand to consider is "DaisyRock" Dasiy Rock is a company that designs its products to tilt towards the feminine-size-wise and visually. The website for Musician's Friend (www.musiciansfriend.com) has a very good selection of their current offerings which include accoustics for about $100 and electrics starting at $150. A complete started pack with guitar, Amp and accesories runs $200 and is a steal-of-a-deal. Another brand to consider is Epiphone. Epiphone has been making guitars since the 1880's and offer both electrics and accoustics. For about $130 you can buy a "Junior" which is fairly loud even when strummed without an amp and also comes as a a starter pack that includes guitar, case and a few accessories for about $200. Squier (by Fender) is another well-regarded brand but it is worth noting that many of their instruments have a longer scale length and their electrics often have "tremolo" (Whammy-bar) bridges that can make it diffcult to tune the guitar. Ibanez makes some great starter guitars and if you can swing $300 for an accoustic the AEL10E has a built-in electronic tuner. But I keep circling round the idea that you are a 13 year-old female...If I were buying for a daughter/neice etc I would buy the debutante electric starter pack-it includes everything you need even a getting started DVD and a nice electronic tuner-unlike the Epiphone which doesn't have a DVD and usues a pitch-pipe instead of the more reliable electronic tuner. The axe itself is small and comfortable and can be played more quietly/privately than an accoustic of either type which benefits you (you won't feel as self-concious) and your family (they don't have to hear you struggle with a new instrument.) Let's face it-this is the 21st century and you DON'T have to start on a "Grandma Guitar." Last thing: the hardest part of playing guitar is the first 2 weeks. Give yourself permission to be terrible. Force yourself to practice/play 20-30 minutes a day until you can play for an hour or so without it hurting your hands too much. If you can stick with it a month you should be well on your way and if you can get your basic chords down could see yourself writing your own songs within another month or two. Millions of people can play the gu

How to read tabs for acoustic guitar?

CupcakeLov

Describe in depth and please show examples. I have tried looking online and they do not help me at all! I am so used to sheet music that tabs is like a foreign language to me. So please explain.

Answer
The main thing you have to remember is that the bottom on the tab is the top string on the guitar. With that being said, say you have something like this
e-------------------------2-----
B---------------------2-----
G-----------------2-------
D-------------2------------
A---------2---------------
E----2--------------------

that means, starting with the Low E (the string closest to your chin, the thickest string on the guitar) you play all six strings on the second fret.

I you need anymore help, feel free to email me.

why are acoustic and electric guitar tabs upside down?

WTFUNKSTER

I just started learning the acoustic guitar and while I was learning how to read tabs I notice that they look upside down(to me at least) example is twinkle twinkle little star intro

Original Tabs

e|00779975544220---------|
B|------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------|
A|--------------------------------|
E|--------------------------------|

Why couldn't it have been

E|------------------------------|
A|--------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------|
B|------------------------------|
e|00779975544220---------|

since your looking at the guitar chords from a top down perspective or even when your looking directly at it you know that B is the second from the bottom and not the second at the top or that D is always the third chord. Wouldn't it be easier for beginners or anyone to read tabs like the second example?

This maybe a really dumb question 2 you experts but I have to know!!!

Answer
Hold your guitar like you do when you play. Now look down at the strings.

I was bored so i made an illustration:
http://www.learningtoshred.com/strings.jpg

You'll see the order of the strings in tablature matches the order of the strings when you look at your guitar while playing.

Your proposed way has the strings in the order you'd see them if you look *somebody else* playing. So it's all a matter of perspective. And since you typically look at tab while *you're* playing, I think the standard way makes more sense. ;)

Acoustic guitar question: If you were an absolute beginner, would you start out with a crappy but cheap guitar?

I lie a lo

that was playable but crappy and then upgrade if you decided to stick to it, or would you invest some more money into a better guitar that you could play for a longer time?
One more question: Before you develop callouses, how badly does pressing the chords hurt?
I think I want to buy myself a guitar and try to play but I'm not sure :x

Answer
Depends on your definitions, and your budget. About $100 is the cutoff point between guitars that a beginner could learn on and those that aren't worth considering. $150-300 is a better range for a decent beginner instrument, and includes some that are very decent indeed, like the Yamaha FG-700S at about $200. I wouldn't suggest that a complete beginner spend more than $300 personally, since their tastes (and their ability to recognize a good guitar when they see one) are bound to develop and change.

It's best to play for shorter periods at a stretch until calluses develop. If it hurts a lot, you're either overdoing it to the point where you risk getting blisters, or your guitar isn't properly adjusted (which can be avoided by only buying from a music store after trying the guitar out. Do not buy online or from nonmusic stores. Don't buy used if you don't know how to recognize potential repair issues).

Does this guitar look good?

Answer
Before you decide on a guitar, you should definitely go to a guitar store and test drive a bunch of them. Each brand tends to have its own feel, so some will feel way more comfortable in your hands than others. If you're just starting, you'll probably want to choose one that has a thin neck, since that will make it easier to move around between chords and notes. And you might even want to get a 3/4 size guitar (also known as a parlor guitar), since those have smaller bodies and are more comfortable to play when you're sitting.

There are tons of great guitar brands, but since you're a beginner, I'd recommend you see how Ibanez or Jasmine by Takamine feels to you. Both brands are made really well, sound great, and have thin necks. Ibanez also has a model called the Daytripper that's a 3/4 guitar. I normally play a full-size Ibanez guitar, but purchased a Daytripper to take with me when I travel. It's an absolute joy to play! Now that I have it, I hardly ever pick up my full-size guitar. It's been discontinued, but you can still find them on eBay and from some online retailers. I'll provide a link below.

If you want to do some research and see what other people think about the different acoustic guitar models, you should check out Musician's Friend. You can search by brand name, price or customer rating. The site also has reviews that are really helpful in narrowing down your options before going to a guitar store.

http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=ibanez+daytripper&_sacat=See-All-Categories

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/acoustic-guitars/6-string

The most important thing is to choose a guitar that feels comfortable to you, since guitars are very personal and one person's dream guitar is another's nightmare. The more natural a guitar feels in your hands, the faster you'll learn. Good luck!

What is the best type of acoustic guitar to get?

Aleksander

i want to get an acoustic guitar for x mas and i dont know which one would be the best and not too expensive

Answer
Acoustic guitars come in two basic types.
Nylon strings (also known as "classical") and
Steel strings (also known as "dreadnaught").

Many guitar teachers recommend the nylon string guitar for beginners primarily because they are not
hard on the fingers. They only need 2-4 lbs of pressure
to make a great sound.
Their softer,"mellow" sound is played with the fingers instead of a pick.

Drednought (folk) guitars are good for experience players that have developed greater hand strngth.
They require 6-12 lbs of pressure to produce a good sound.
They have a "crisper" louder sound and are usually played with a pick.-maybe because steel strings are
"hard" on the fingers-.
Both instruments can be used to play all types of music
but for melody lines in music most players prefer the
nylon string guitar, and for back-up and just chord playing they tend to prefer the steel string guitar.

Either instrument can be found at local music stores and internet music sellers at prices ranging from $100 and up for a playable (Not a toy) beginner's guitar.
Anything under $200 will have a "laminated" top which is like a plastic-like film over a thin piece of wood.
This type wil take more "rough-handling" that solid-top guitars. The down-side is that the sound projected will never improved with age (unlik solid-top guitars).
What is sound like when new will be the same years later.
Solid-top guitars will start around $200.and up and they most likely will have either ceder or spruce as the solid-top.
The wood will "age" with playing and the sound will be superior than the "laminated" top guitars.
Because is a solid-top they are more delicate and subject to be affected by temperature changes.

Be aware that most guitars sold in USA under $800. are manufactured overseas.
Many factories made large volume of guitars that end up with different "Labels" yet they are all made at the same time out of the same machinery.
For this reason it is best to try several guitars in you
budget-range and don't pay much atention to the label.
Go For Sound over Looks and "Brand".

You could also check with Harmony Central (www.harmonycentral.com) the Users Review for the
specific guitar you found to your liking to check what
actual owner/players say aabout the instrument.

There are many reliable web music stores that will probably sell the instrument with good warranties.
Most have 800 phone No. and they could answer any question.
There is seldon charges for shipping and no sales tax if their store is not in your own state

If you go via the internet stay away from e-bay sellers.
Too many complaints from buyers about "shady sellers" and poor return polices.

I hope this help- Enjoy your guitar.

can i put nylon strings on an acoustic guitar?

da man

i got a new guitar and i was wondering if i could go buy some nylon strings and put them on my old guitar. Would this sound the same as having a nylon string guitar?

Answer
A nylon string guitar (called some times a classical guitar) *is* an acoustic guitar ... and so is a steel string guitar.

Both require individual types of strings though. Steel strings have higher tension (as pointed out correctly by someone else) and they are meant for steel string guitars only - they will totally break a nylon string guitar.

Nylon strings will not produce enough tension on a guitar braced for steel strings. Furthermore, the strings are fastened differently. You'll use bridge pins to fasten steel strings with a ball end - nylon strings are usually looped and tied to the end of the bridge. You may find nylon strings with ball ends, but these are still meant for nylon string guitars.

Just for the records: The three wound strings in a nylon set have a nylon thread core - they are not steel...

You do have a type of string which is called silk and steel. These are meant for steel string guitars and are softer than regular steel strings.

You might also want to have your guitar looked at and possibly set up properly, if it is hard to play (and that is the reason why you'd want to try out nylon strings).

If you were to buy an acoustic guitar..,what do you look for? even if it cheap?

emo_kidste

If you were to buy an acoustic guitar..,what do you look for? even if it cheap

because I am practicing myself to learn how to play a guitar..,and my dad will buy me one..,so what do i need to look for a guitar? and how much would it cost?

Answer
Most "cheap" acoustic guitars are made of "cheap laminated" wood. The price of a guitar is similar to buying furniture. If you get a Cherry or Oak Bedroom set, you'll pay for it. It's built of high quality wood. The grade of wood is a major factor in instrument cost and sound quality. I would encourage you to also shop at a music store instead of somewhere like a pawn shop or an online dealer many miles away. A (good) music store will sell you something with a warranty and stand behind it and if anything goes wrong it's a simple trip down the road to get the remedy. Affordable brands to look for would be Johnson, Alvarez, Washburn, or Aria. I own a music store and my advice would be to buy something that will have resale or trade-in value. To achieve good resale or trade-in value, you should buy a guitar that's made of solid wood (no laminates). Granted solid wood guitars are a bit more money compared to a laminated wood guitar, but they are much better all around. As for specifics on what to look for when you're holding a potential purchase in-hand....

Look at the string height. Strings should be comfortably close to the fretboard on the neck.
Look down the neck and make sure it's straight as an arrow.
Look across the front of the body to make sure it doesn't bow outward near where the strings go into the body (The Bridge).
Check the tuning keys to make sure they operate smoothly and hold the strings firmly in-tune.
Check the wood (if it's not painted a solid color) for any signs of cracks.
Make sure to ask if it has a truss-rod adjustment for the neck.

If the guitar you're looking at passes all of those basics, then you have a good guitar pretty much. As for how much it would cost, beginner guitars typically run around 100 to 150 dollars at the very least if you get anything that's remotely decent. Solid wood guitars typically would start around the 275 to 300 dollar range at the very least.

Cheap Acoustic Guitar?

VJ

I rounded up about $150 bucks. (I've been working around for like 4-5 monthes top!) And, I don't know how to play any instrument (sad, but true) and I always wanted to play Guitar since I was little. And with my budget, Electric Guitars are out for sure and I really don't want to spend so much at an instrument I might end up, well, sucking at >.<. And I've heard Acoustic is a bit harder to play then an Electric (I'm not 100% on that statement.) So, I'm just looking for a Cheap Acoustic Guitar, luckly, at a store. Does anyone know a good relieable store that might sell an Acoustic Guitar with steal strings, adustable/replaceable strings, a pick (really don't care for a pick though. I can get one easy.) And for someone thats 15 years old. Thank You!

Answer
Hmm...I would go to Guitar Center or Sam Ash. If you tell an employee what your price range is, they can recommend the best guitar that they know of for your budget.

Yes, electrics are a bit easier in my opinion. You could actually get a cheap electric guitar for around that same price, except you would have to buy a cable and amp also. If you scrounged up about $50 more, you could get a starter pack for about $200 that includes everything you need to get started on an electric.

Just go to a real guitar shop, not a pawn shop, so that they can help you out with your choice. Make sure you get a full size, too.

Hope this helped =)

good dvd for acoustic guitar beginners?

Blink 182

ok so ive recently brought an acoustic guitar but ive never really playd 1 before is there any recomended dvd's to help me out?...thankyou! :D

Answer
The Acoustic Guitar Method is a very good DVD for beginners (http://www.homespuntapes.com/CatalogueRetrieve.aspx?ProductID=1015800&A=SearchResult&SearchID=304966&ObjectID=1015800&ObjectType=27). I'd recommend any of Homespun's DVDs. They've been doing acoustic guitar instruction for over 40 years, and their videos are outstanding. Great teachers, camera work, and and overall instruction. They've also got a new video for beginners with Steve Kaufman (http://www.homespuntapes.com/CatalogueRetrieve.aspx?ProductID=1679286&A=SearchResult&SearchID=282716&ObjectID=1679286&ObjectType=27), who is an incredible guitar player and a very popular and respected guitar teacher. So, this could be a good video, too, though his specialty is country and bluegrass guitar, and it looks like he does teach for the pure beginner in this video, but as it progresses it will focus on country and bluegrass playing.
They have several DVDs for beginners, so you should check those out and see what looks best to you.

There are also some great online guitar programs that are worth checking out, if you're considering going that route. Jamorama (http://6ebc8zrd8h8x2l6cigvblalq4a.hop.clickbank.net/) is a very good one.

Acoustic Guitar also has a downloadable video/pdf guide for beginners (http://www.stringletter.com/Shop/The-Beginner-s-Guide-to-Guitar-Complete-Edition) that is very good, too.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

What is acoustic and Spanish guitar?

Vishal

I really don't know ,probably nothing bout it !!
But now I want to know wat is Spanish guitar and acoustic guitar with some examples(songs)??
I want a simple way to understand these !!
Thank you !!:|

Answer
An acoustic guitar is one that doesn't require electronic amplification. In other words, it's not an electric guitar. Many people incorrectly think it means a steel-string guitar. Actually, acoustic guitars come in several types, including some with nylon strings ("classical guitars").

A Spanish guitar is one that is made in Spain. It's sometimes sloppily used, especially by older people, to mean various other kinds of guitars (sometimes classical guitars, sometimes flat-tops as opposed to archtops, sometimes any acoustic! Talking to people of 80 or 90 or reading old books, you'll encounter all of 'em). It's really impossible to tell what anybody means by it unless you have some other clue. It's not a term used by people who know guitars, unless they're talking about one made in Spain.

Where could i find affordable pink acoustic guitars?

.

Ive been looking everywhere! The only ones i cand find are like the ghetto ones you see at walmart or Daisy brand ( I'll NEVER play one) but anyway, Id like tokeep it under 350 but i could stretch to $400.

Answer
ANY pink acoustic guitars you find are going to be cheap and "ghetto", like the Daisy brand, or like the ones you see at Wal-Mart, Anytime a guitar manufacturer paints their instruments pink (or any other solid color), its a dead giveaway that its a cheap guitar meant for beginners who don't know any better -- the pink paint helps hide the fact that the wood is crappy and second-rate.

You never see builders of professional quality guitars, like Martin, Gibson, Taylor, Larrivee, Santa Cruz, etc, selling pink guitars. THEIR instruments always show off the natural grain and color of the wood, because they use top quality woods.

Acoustic Guitars In affordable price range?

Im going to buy a new guitar with my birthday money but im not too sure what to get, I need some idea as to what guitars are good quality. I'm not looking to spend anything more than $500, so what are a few different brands that I should look out for? I have been playing for 2 years now and I really enjoy playing. I have just bought a acoustic guitar
I only noe about 6 string and how to play them at different frets
PLz suggest me a easy song that I can play along with the chords or string named that r required for playing it
Thank u.

Answer
I also wanted to buy an acoustic guitar but hopefully soon :). If you're really a beginner in playing a guitar, choose only one and you already know the song for you to practice. Practice it over and over again until you finally get the strumming on how to play the song. I cannot suggest a song, it's up to you to choose that you already know and search the chords and lyrics for you to get started.

Whats the cheapest Gibson Acoustic Guitar?

Ali

One that wont break out on me. I want a cheap one (around 100$?) thats good for beginners. Its for my 12-year old sister, so I dont want it to be huge.

Id also like it if it had the sunburst color, but yeah. Id like a cheap one, that wont die in a second, reliable, all that kind of stuff. Help=love

Answer
The cheapest Gibson guitar is the Songmaker at around $1000. They put their name on the Maestro, but as others have rightly pointed out, they are complete junk and not worth the money. Epiphone is a Gibson's licensed clone and they make guitars similar to actual Gibsons at a much lower price. The DR100 is the cheapest Epiphone acoustic at around $100 and is much better than the Maestro but still not a very good guitar for a beginner. Epiphones (and Gibsons) have fat necks and are harder for beginners with smaller hands to play. I think you'd be much better off spending your $100 on a Takamine Jasmine like this one:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Jasmine-by-Takamine-S34C-NEX-Cutaway-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=516458
You won't find any guitar with a solid top for $100 and the Takamine Jasmine is a very decent laminate top guitar that plays pretty nice for that low price. Sure, it would be better to spend $200 to get a Yamaha FG700S with a solid spruce top, but if $100 is your limit, the Takamine Jasmine is your best bet. You won't get a real Gibson for that and you should avoid those horrible cheap Maestro and First Act guitars like the plague. I've had students come to me already having bought those guitars and they are just horrid.

acoustic guitar?

Jessica

i want to learn how to play the guitar but is there in a diffrence in sound. ( i wanna play acoustic rock) and what is a good guitar to start off with but is cheap

Answer
A good standard yamaha is cheap and can sound very respectable when played well. just say a beginner gutar and the salesman will likely take you right to it

Expect it to take a while to sound good in your hands. but dont get discouraged. learn to read if you can but practice scales in the dark to get your feel for the frets. say the notes including sharps and flats as you play them for a while.

If you like rock you will almost certainly want to go electric eventually. you can also get a fender SQUIRE electric for a decent price. (relatively speaking)

Easy acoustic rock songs to learn to sing and play guitar to?

Green

Examples of songs I'm actively teaching myself-

Wonderwall (Oasis) - (the 'all the roads we have to walk' section is still rough for me)

Highland's Apparition (Chevelle) - Oddly enough my best song to sing/play with by far

Outside (Staind) - not really acoustic but I love the song too much and it's easy enough

Through Glass (Stone Sour)

It started off bad but it's slowly getting better, can I expect slow and steady growth as I keep practicing this? I record myself and make myself listen to it afterwards (sometimes wincing) but at least it keeps me honest...

What are some other songs I can try?

Answer
Smells like teen spirit (Nirvana) - Its an easy one to learn once you get the hang of it and has a nice solo. here is the guitar tab link http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/smells_like_teen_spirit_ver3_tab.htm

Everlong (Foo Fighters) - Its sounds nice acoustic. here is the guitar tab link for acoustic http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/f/foo_fighters/everlong_acoustic_tab.htm

What is the cheapest Taylor electric-acoustic guitar?

Tamara S.

A lot of the bands I listen to use a form of a Taylor guitar and I think they sound great! I'm looking for an electric-acoustic guitar or at least one with a cutaway. The only thing is that they're fairly expensive, so what's the cheapest I can get it for, in Canada? Please and thank you!

Answer
With Taylor Guitars, even their low-end guitars are a bit on the expensive side
However, they are totally the best bang for your buck in that price range

The cheapest Taylor guitar that has an electric pickup and a cutaway would be the Taylor 110ce, which costs about $800
The cheapest Taylor guitar is the 110, which starts at about $600
They charge an extra $50 for the pickup, and another $150 for the cutaway.
Unfortunately, they don't make guitars with only a cutaway and no pickup.
I have a Taylor 110e which I got for $650; It has a pickup, but no cutaway. I LOVE my Taylor!

What are the best less-cheap Taylor acoustic-electric guitars?

shreditout

Taylor guitars are great...that means they can be incredibly expensive. What acoustic-electric Taylor guitars are the cheapest (cutaway preferably)

Answer
The cheapest cutaway I know of will be the 110ce at $799.

Acoustic or classical guitar for a beginner?

Lilac

just learning to play guitar and the type of music i would like to play is the taylor swift kind ...
so which guitar is better for that? anyway what's the difference? thank you! :) .

Answer
Taylor Swift plays a steel stringed acoustic guitar. If that's the kind of music you intend to play, then you should get a steel stringed acoustic. The Yamaha FG700 would make an excellent choice. Don't buy any guitar from Target, BestBuy, amazon.com, or eBay. They have a lot of nice looking but unplayable guitars at attractive prices. Don't be fooled. Get your guitar from a real guitar shop. It would be a real shame if you inadvertently bought a junk guitar and had such a hard time playing it that you gave up in frustration.

FYI, it's a common mistake, but classical guitars are also considered acoustic. If you want to sound like you know what you're talking about when you go guitar shopping, keep this in mind. ANY guitar that can be played without an amplifier is an acoustic.

Classical guitars are nylon-stringed acoustics. They have a rich mellow tone and are typically used for classical music. There are a few structural differences but the main thing you'd notice is that the necks are wider and bodies often smaller than steel stringed guitars.

Steel stringed guitars come in a lot of styles. but the most common (and the kind you want) is a flat top or folk style steel stringed. Don't worry about remembering that...you'd have to search pretty hard to find an arch-top acoustic these days. Most pop, country, rock, etc is played on steel stringed acoustics. There are different body sizes, so it's a good idea to try a few out to see what feels good.

Happy hunting!

what electro acoustic guitar for beginner?

Hi,
Can anyone suggest an electro acoustic guitar to buy (as in the model, not just a certain brand) becuase I live in a place where there are literally no guitar shops, so I cant actually test the guitar myself. But Im looking for something that is easy to play as I'm a beginner and quite petite. Someone suggested a fender cd60-ce?? And from what Ive read, ibanez guitars are have small necks for beginners, so any specific models??? Thanks for any help, been going mad looking at different guitars. My budget is anything from £60-250. Thanks!!! :)

Answer
There's no point in wasting money on the electronics if you're a beginner, since you're not going to be playing for a large group of people for quite some time. By then you'll be on to your next guitar in any case.

Fender makes truly mediocre acoustic guitars and the cd60-ce is a perfect example. It is an all-plywood guitar which is a real mistake. Also, if you're petite why get a giant guitar like a dreadnought? It's guaranteed to be uncomfortable for you to play.

Take a look at the Yamaha FS-720S. It has a solid wood top and is a smaller, more comfortable shape.

Good luck.

Acoustic Guitar Question?

Heather

Okay i want a acoustic guitar and when they say 32 or 41 inches, is that how long the neck is or th whole guitar?

Answer
The only guitars that list size like that are cheap internet guitars. They're referring to the entire length of the guitar. Don't buy them. I'll say it once again: Don't buy them. There are much more fun ways to throw your money away. When you buy a cheap internet guitar...or one from Walmart, what you get is something that resembles a guitar but is almost impossible to play or keep in tune. Nobody want's a guitar with those problems, but for a beginner it's a recipe for failure. The reason they sell cheaper guitars on eBay and Amazon.com is because they're junk. If anybody had the chance to try them first, they'd never buy them.

The best way to buy a guitar is from a real guitar store. It's going to cost a little more to get a real playable guitar...but why would you want an unplayable one anyway? Your local guitar store is well aware of the internet prices for name brands, and will usually match or beat them. Go to the store, find a guitar you can afford and if you can't play, have the salesperson play it. If they have a hard time playing it, try another. In the long run you'll save money by buying a playable guitar the first time.....and your learning experience will be a lot easier if you aren't fighting the instrument.

Best of luck to you...

What should I look for when buying an acoustic guitar?!?

mikeyjames

hey-

i want to buy a new acoustic guitar and i was wondering if anyone could tell me a few things about the guitar that i should be checking out as far as a good quality acoustic guitar. i.e. strings, fret board, etc.

thanks

Answer
Well it depends on alot of different things. How long have you been playing for? If you're new to guitar you're going to want something cheaper that you can just test out and learn the basics on.

As for the fret board, it depends on your preference. I personally like to have a smoother neck with less pronounced frets. For a cheaper, but quality model, I'd say an epiphone or a lower end yahama are great for this.

One other thing to watch for is how far off the neck the strings are. Higher strings are going to make more dynamic notes, but are going to be harder to play and alot more difficult to play chords on.

Strings once again are a preference. Thankfully, strings are generally pretty inexpensive, so play around with a few different gauges until you find what you like best.

Last but not least, just go to a store like guitar center and play the different guitars. Not only will you get a feel for what you want but the salesman at the store will be able to help you out alot more then someone online can.

What guitar should I buy?

Lulu

Hi, I want to get a guitar for my boyfriend. We both play, but I dont really know what brands are the best! I know he likes Taylor, but they are so expensive!
I was looking to spend about £300. Any idea's anyone?!
Ps, I don't want an electric, maybe electro accoustic. he has been looking at 12 strings too.
Also, anything with a country/folk sound would be a bonus!!
What is the point of having a place to ask people's opinions if people will state the obvious and be rude?

Dont answer if you have nothing helpful to say.

Answer
Well, £300 is not a huge amount of money for an acoustic guitar, but the good news is that it is enough to buy something pretty nice.

Your aim should be to buy a guitar with the best specification for this sum of money. In terms of acoustic guitars, this would mean choosing an instrument with a solid wood top (rather than a laminated top).

Personally, I would recommend a Simon & Patrick guitar. These are made in Canada by a company called Godin, and are built to a very high standard. I have one myself, and although I do own more expensive instruments, I find it to be an excellent guitar and play mine a great deal. I would expect the cost of a new Simon & Patrick Woodland series to set you back about £300 with a hardshell case (by the way, always have a hardshell case for your guitar - these cases prevent damage so much better than soft case alternatives.) You will sometimes see these guitars sold as a Simon & Patrick SP6 (this is the old model name, which they changed to "Woodland" quite recently, although the guitar is identical.)

You can find information and pictures of the instrument at Simon & Patrick's website. The guitar has two options, a solid cedar top (which produces a more mellow sound) or a solid spruce top (which produces a brighter sound).
See:
http://www.simonandpatrick.com/woodlandcedar.htm
http://www.simonandpatrick.com/woodlandspruce.htm

These guitars are also available as 12 strings and electro-acoustics, although these will be more expensive.

The cheapest place to pick one up new, in the United Kingdom (in my experience) is Sound Control. See: http://www.soundcontrol.co.uk/mod_1/pages/index.php

In fact, here you go:

http://www.soundcontrol.co.uk/mod_1/pages/mod_1.12/pages/mod_1.12.1/pages/mod_1.12.1.1/pages/index.php?sku=1.1.1.2.1-21-14050

£249 for the guitar, the case will run you another £50.
See: http://www.soundcontrol.co.uk/mod_1/pages/mod_1.12/pages/mod_1.12.1/pages/mod_1.12.1.1/pages/index.php?sku=1.1.1.5.2-152-62

Of course, there are other options available. Yamaha make excellent guitars in this sort of price range. I recently played a friend's FG750, and though it was a really nice instrument. These also retail for around £250. See: http://www.yamaha-europe.com/yamaha_europe/uk/10_musical_instruments/30_guitars_basses_amps/10_acoustic_guitars_western/10_acoustic_guitars_western/20_fg_guitars/98_FG750S/index.html

You're quite right that Taylors, Martins etc. are expensive, although they have brought out lower priced models in the last few years. I am not that convinced by these, personally, I must say. I tend to prefer good Seagulls, Yamahas, or Simon & Patricks to cheaper "big name" guitars. Of course, once you get into the really big bucks, Taylors, Martins and Gibsons are unbeatable...Speaking of which, Seagulls are very popular amongst folk players (although the necks can be quite chunky.) Excellent, affordable guitars though. See: http://www.art-music.co.uk/guitars/seagull-simonandpatrick.php

If you find a guitar and want to research it more before buying it, then take a look at Harmony Central's review section - it contains user reviews for virtually every manufacturer and model of acoustic guitar: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Acoustic+Guitar

One last thing, if you live anywhere near the Midlands, I find the people at Sheehan's guitar shop in Leicester to be really helpful. (note: I am not associated with this business in any way, I've just had good experiences buying guitars from there). They're right by Leicester railway station, but I think they do mail order these days too. See: http://www.sheehans.com/

Good luck with your purchase, I hope your boyfriend enjoys his new guitar, whatever it is.

Best Brand of Acoustic Guitar?

Xxyerr.cut

I want to buy an accoustic guitar for my boyfriend, as a surprise birthday present, so obviously, I can't ask him what kind he wants.

We were talking one day, and he said, he really wanted an acoustic guitar, but when I asked him what brand, out of curiosity, he said, 'Just an acoustic guitar...'

He's not a beginner, he's been playing electric guitar for many years now.
His genera is along the lines of, 'punk rock,' meaning, basically, Blink 182 style.

I want to get a really good guitar, between $250 and $550, but I'm not quite sure what BRAND.

I have asked some band members, and have gotten mostly Ibanez and Epiphone, among many others.

What's your opinion on the best brand of acoustic guitar ?

Answer
Martin makes a revered, quality acoustic guitar.

Epiphones are made by Gibson, they are affordable, but nice acoustic guitars.

You should be able to get an excellent acoustic guitar in the price range you mentioned.

Beginner Acoustic Guitar Songs?

Sam

I actually want to know the chords of "By Chance (You and I)" by JRA but I figured out that it requires a capo. But is there any way I can play it without a capo?

And if you can, please list down good and easy songs to play? I'm a beginner in a guitar so please list down the very easy ones. Thanksss!

Answer
Any song recorded with a capo can be played without a capo. It will simply sound in a lower key. There are tons of easy songs that use 3 chords. A simple beginner chord progression is G, Cadd9 and D. You can hear this common chord group on songs like "Every Rose Has it's Thorn"
Add E minor to that group and there are lots more choices such as "Good Riddance" by Green Day.
"Brown Eyed Girl" is an easy G,C,D song too, and a lot of fun to play.
Do a google search for "open guitar chords" and print yourself some chord charts. Then do another search for "3 chord songs". Finally, YouTube is a good resource for tutorials on easy acoustic songs and lessons.
Lastly, or maybe firstly, try a lesson with several local guitar teachers until you find one you like. You will learn tips and tricks that will accelerate your playing, and expand your song knowledge, WAY faster than doing it on your own.

Have fun

i bought an acoustic guitar and i have no idea how to use it...i don't know how to read guitar tabs or how to play it...the youtube videos i watch confuse me...do you know any good websites or good youtube videos. please help me it would mean alot.

Answer
omg! i think its so awesome that you are deciding to learn the guitar yourself! that is what i did about four years ago :). um i will give you my bets of advice. which is basically what i did to learn it. in all honesty-the videos did not really help me so i did it what some would call the "complicated" way but it helps a lot in the long run. i took and learned from multiple sources. and also i have never learned how to read musical notes-but i can read tablature and chords, and i still play it really well so for acoustic guitar learning those ways of reading music will help tremendously. for learning how to read notes i recommend taking a music class in school that teahces you it-thats what im doing next year. soo anyway-i learned from a few different sources-this book-
http://www.hinklerbooks.com/img/cat/1741576954_lge.jpg
(it was very helpful-but take everything it says with a grain of salt-not EVERYTHING is entirely true. and if you have any specific questions, you can email me.)
and to read tablature-which is VERY important in learning chords/chord progressions and how to read and begin to play music-is here(its a VERY helpful article):
http://guitar.about.com/od/tabchordslyrics/ss/read_guitar_tab.htm
also this one might help:
http://www.fretplay.com/how-to-read-tabs.shtml
and this image will help you too:
http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/Frary/LCC%20Images/guitar_with_labels.gif
ALSO-remember to leanr where each string is located and which string is the first, and which is the last. and what frets are. and of course what chords and tabs are. good luck!!! it sounds really complicated but it gets MUCH easier!! and once you begin to learn-don't forget that you must practice what you know on the guitar EVERY SINGLE DAY for about 3 months for your fingers to form caluses which are very imprtant because they make your playing experience much easier for your fingers(stops the guitar strings from hurting your fingertips) and also it makes you sound better when you are playing then. GOOD LUCK!!! Your gonna need some. :).
