Can I change my acoustic guitar strings from nylon to steel?

My acoustic guitar was my first guitar and I got a very long time ago, but I haven't changed the strings yet at all. Anyway it has nylon strings and I would much prefer the sound & feel of steel strings so I was wondering if I can simply change my guitar strings from nylon to steel or would a lot of adjustment or a completely new guitar be necissary?

If you want to ruin the guitar, then be my guest and put some steel on that baby. Seriously, forget it. Steel strings are designed for acoustic steel string guitars which are built to withstand and work with this far greater tension.

The basses you have on now is nylon core with a thin metal winding. The total tension in this set is only a fraction of the tension in a set of steel strings.

You will need another guitar if you want to have steel, I'm afraid.

Hey, i've noticed a few of my favorite musicians that play acoustic guitar live are able to amplify their REGULAR acoustic guitars by plugging a little device into the amp. The little device slides under the strings over the tone hole on the body of the guitar

It's called a "pickup"

It's the same idea as an electric guitar, except for acoustic guitars. They are not very expensive, but depending on what kind you get you may want to pay someone to install it.

What can I use to make my acoustic guitar louder?

I have a gig coming up and I was wondering if any musicians have any tips for what I can do to make my guitar sound louder, other than have a separate mic and mic stand. It is an acoustic guitar so it cannot be connected to an amp, and I will be singing so it needs to be loud without being too overbearing. I have heard of something called a pick-up, but I havent looked too into yet. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, DD. Yes, you can install a pick-up in an acoustic guitar that in turn can be cabled over to an amp, or to a (good) PA. General purpose electric guitar amps, however, introduce control and sound problems, so an amp designed for acoustics is better; just bring money. Direct to its own channel on a PA gets it done. These approaches would be while working with a rock or country band. If not, without that high surrounding sound pressure, just using a second microphone would be fine. Whatever you want to do, get some rehearsal time in with the rig to determine settings. Not doing so until show time can lead to a mess on stage.
