List of acoustic guitar notes?

Bob Oscar

I am having trouble tuning my guitar with a Snark clip on chromatic guitar tuner can someone please give me a list of the notes on a acoustic guitar starting from the first string (the thinnest) then going up to the thickest string (the last one) ex A D E and things like that. I'm a beginner =)

Answer
Just to add to Rigby's note -

The thick string (low note) is the called the 1st string. (Important guitar vernacular!)

And pressing the string on the frets, you are typically going up a half step (i.e. F to F#) for every fret.

An Acoustic Guitar for a beginner? Tips?

Nyan R

Hey everyone.

I'm planning on getting an Acoustic Guitar here soon. After listening to the type of music and musicians over the years, I really want to get one.

My question for you all is, what is a good guitar for a beginner. After a quick google search, I found someone say a Seagull S6 is a good beginners guitar. But I have no real knowledge on the subject and would like some input from you all. So any suggestions are welcomed and my price range would be $400 and below, maybe even a bit above.

All suggestions welcomed and thanks in advance!

A good acoustic guitar for beginners?

It's a good thing you've already decided on your budget, so what you should do is look at all the guitars in your price range. Now here comes the difficult part: You're going to have to try them. I know you probably can't play yet, but it's still important you hear and test them. Do NOT get the first instrument you see that you can afford, or the nicest looking one, too many people make that mistake.

First, have someone play it for you, and see if you like the sound it produces. Also, strum the strings yourself, and see if you like it. Pluck individual notes and take notice of how long the note holds. It's generally a rule that better guitars have better sustain, meaning that the note will ring longer. Next, hold down the strings. Notice how hard you have to push to get them down. A better guitar shouldn't hurt you too much. If it feels like it'll bust your fingers if you hold on for longer than a few seconds, it's probably not the ideal choice.

Next, wrap your hand around the neck, with your thumb under, and your other four fingers on strings within reach. Does it feel too thick? Too thin? Only you can decide, because it's personal preference. Also, check the tuning pegs, turn them and the should offer some resistance, but not too much. Finally, check for overall construction, make sure it's all in good shape.

Do this, and decide on what is best. Try not to look at the brand names, because honestly, at entry level they're usually all made in China and of similar materials, and sometimes even in the same factory. So, get the one that sounds and feels best regardless of brand.

However, just to give you an idea of what is worth looking out for, the following brands are popular amongst beginners and are generally good value. Don't be afraid to try something else though, remember, it's whatever feels and sounds best.

- Takamine
- Yamaha
- Ibanez
- Seagull
There are others of course, just as there are brands to avoid, so I'd suggest testing them out. Oh, and in my opinion, cheap Fender guitars suck. So avoid them like the plague.

Good luck, hope this helped and have fun! =)

acoustic guitar for beginner?

UnBrOkEn

about 6 months ago i decided to start playing guitar...i didnt really know if it was gonna be a fling or a real new hobby..i bought the maestro gibson guitar(from best buy) since it was just a begginer guitar..but i honestly didnt like it...i dont know if youve ever tried it or if all guitars are like it..but the notes sound so off..even right after tuning..i replaced the strings with eernie ball strings but it just doesnt seem right..
when i see vids of ppl playin guitar it feels so smooth but when i play..i could really lose like a pound every half hour because it takes so much effort to play..
so although im still considered a begginer, any ideas of a good non expensive guitar..give me model types and prices plz..thanx
btw-does anyone know the kind of guitars and how much they cost in this video...i know its prob RLY expensive bt i love the quality..so smooth and very nice sound :)

Answer
Seems like regular Ibanez acoustics in that video. Probably not their cheapest models though, due to the floral neck inlay, but they are not super expensive. What you define as really expensive is of course a subjective matter. The top end acoustic instruments costs $10,000 or more and are hand built.

Also nothing particular about the sound in these guitars. Any decent steel string guitar with fresh strings and a good set-up (well adjusted) should be able to produce at least similar results.

If you go by brands such as Ibanez, Yamaha, Jasmine (by Takamine), Samick or Epiphone and make sure you get a steel string guitar with a solid (all wood) top, you'd be good to go. You should be able to find a good beginner guitar for around $200 and up in the US (they tend to be slightly more expensive in other countries).

Make sure the guitar is being properly set up/adjusted with light strings. Most lower priced instruments needs to be looked over to play well. If you take any guitar right off the shelf and just change strings, it is very likely going to be much harder to play than what is needed.

Only expensive guitars come with a good set up from the factory and even in these instances, the guitars tend to be a little on the "hard to play" side. The reason is that each guitar needs to be adjusted to the person playing it. And if the action (string height) has been set too low, it is much harder to bring it up again.

So, any decent guitar adjustment involves picking the right strings, setting the neck relief (almost perfect straight neck) and then then taking the action/string height down to where it fits the player :-)

i bought an acoustic guitar and i have no idea how to use it...i don't know how to read guitar tabs or how to play it...the youtube videos i watch confuse me...do you know any good websites or good youtube videos. please help me it would mean alot.

Answer
omg! i think its so awesome that you are deciding to learn the guitar yourself! that is what i did about four years ago :). um i will give you my bets of advice. which is basically what i did to learn it. in all honesty-the videos did not really help me so i did it what some would call the "complicated" way but it helps a lot in the long run. i took and learned from multiple sources. and also i have never learned how to read musical notes-but i can read tablature and chords, and i still play it really well so for acoustic guitar learning those ways of reading music will help tremendously. for learning how to read notes i recommend taking a music class in school that teahces you it-thats what im doing next year. soo anyway-i learned from a few different sources-this book-
http://www.hinklerbooks.com/img/cat/1741576954_lge.jpg
(it was very helpful-but take everything it says with a grain of salt-not EVERYTHING is entirely true. and if you have any specific questions, you can email me.)
and to read tablature-which is VERY important in learning chords/chord progressions and how to read and begin to play music-is here(its a VERY helpful article):
http://guitar.about.com/od/tabchordslyrics/ss/read_guitar_tab.htm
also this one might help:
http://www.fretplay.com/how-to-read-tabs.shtml
and this image will help you too:
http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/Frary/LCC%20Images/guitar_with_labels.gif
ALSO-remember to leanr where each string is located and which string is the first, and which is the last. and what frets are. and of course what chords and tabs are. good luck!!! it sounds really complicated but it gets MUCH easier!! and once you begin to learn-don't forget that you must practice what you know on the guitar EVERY SINGLE DAY for about 3 months for your fingers to form caluses which are very imprtant because they make your playing experience much easier for your fingers(stops the guitar strings from hurting your fingertips) and also it makes you sound better when you are playing then. GOOD LUCK!!! Your gonna need some. :).

I am a beginner in guitar and i have to buy one. Can you guys suggest some good acoustic guitars for beginners?

Answer
well there are a lot of options, don't get anything that doesn't have fret markers, i know a lot of no name guitars will be free of fret markers, my first was like this and it was a b**** to figure where my frets were. take note of size (this is scale, or distance from the nut to the bridge, body size is also important and should be taken into consideration if the beginner is young). I would recommend squier, alvarez, ibanez, and ovation if you can find a decent one for cheap. squier guitars are cheap and last pretty long, but they may not sound as good as the others. ibanez guitars are more expensive but the sound they put out is well worth the money (provided the person learning will stick with it). ovation guitars are just wonderful but i have heard from some guitar center employees (cant always trust them) that ovation guitars do not last very long, and I have plenty of friends whose ovation guitars died or lost their outlet jack inside the guitar, so make sure to tighten it now and then if you can. the real benefit to the ovation guitars is the composite back, this is far more comfortable than your usual wood guitar body and makes little difference in sound. alvarez guitars are a pretty good medium, they sound gorgeous, they are relatively cheap, and if you go acoustic-electric the electronics are very good. acoustic electric guitars are really only a good idea if a) the price difference is $50 and under, b) this beginner WILL stick with it and plans on performing at some point, or c) it just sounded too darn good through an amp.

I want to know everything a owner of a Acoustic Guitar should know?

Hiral

Like I want to know how to tune it with a pitch pipe tuner and how to clean it. Care for it. Replace strings and quick if it is working good. And I want to get like a few sheets of chords or notes of the Acoustic Guitar for beginners because I just brought a Acoustic Guitar and i do not know how to play, care, clean, tune, and stuff. Like i want music to follow with also. Thanks

Your best option is to visit your local music store, state your position as a beginner, and ask for what you need. Guitar lessons from an accredited teacher would be a plus for you.
