Answer
Its really hard to tell with Asian built beginners guitars, as it depends on what materials were coming down the assembly line and what kind of day the under payed worker was having on any particular day, which is why a beginner should buy from a good music store which in many cases sell used guitars also, this way if you do have a problem you can deal with the music store rather than some guy on a classified ad.

What's a good guitar for a beginner?

sushi_girl

Hi, i'm looking to buy a beginner guitar for $200 or less. Should i get an acoustic one or a classical one? Please tell me the difference and what type of guitar you used to have when you were a beginner. I live in Toronto, Ontario. Do u know any good places? I don't mind getting a used one. Please help. Thank you.

Answer
Any guitar is good to start on, I'd suggest an acoustic so you can play anywhere. A Classical guitar usually has nylon strings that are softer in sound & touch. You'd be better off on a regular acoustic so your fingers can get toughend up. Yeah, they'll hurt!

Answer
Gibson and Fender instruments are professional grade - and expensive. Unless you've got a rich uncle they're not where most kids start.

A really good acoustic guitar for a beginner is the Yamaha FG series.

If you're looking for an inexpensive beginner electric guitar - Yamaha also makes several of those as well- like this one.

Other "beginner" brands are Squier (by Fender) and Epiphone (by Gibson)

Buy only from a legitimate Guitar store. Never online.
Hope this helps

Hey, i really want to learn how to play the electric guitar but I have no idea of where to start.?

Basically all i know is that i want to learn how to play the instrument but i dont know how to go about buying a quality, trustworthy and affordable guitar and amp as well as all of the other stuff or how i should go about learning how to play it. Im pretty much at ground zero and any/all help from anyone with some experience would be greatly appreciated. Btw, im only 15 so i can't exactly break the bank with this but i am willing to consider lots of options and i just want a quality, trusty guitar that looks cool and has a great sound. If listing some of my favourite bands will help (cuz im most likely gonna work on covers for their songs) helps then please say so and i can post them here. I need all the help I can get from what/where to buy and how to start playing and what not. All help is welcome and appreciated. thanks! And im in the toronto area (scarborough) if that helps with narrowing down possible stores to check out and what not.
Alright i just wanted to also mention that these are the bands i typically listen to and i would like to play some of their music and have sound kinda like these:
RHCP, Metallica, Billy Talent (favourite), Jimi Hendrix, GNR, AC DC, Coheed and Cambria. there's a lot more but those are the main ones that have music i would like to play. thanks again guys and great response so far although kinda confusing with some people saying buy this amp and others saying no not that one get this instead. regardless, i appreciate it.

I got my first guitar for free when I was 6 years old (it was my dads m8s and he gave me it). It was a fender stratocaster and I just let it rust until I was 11. If you're into rock/metal, then pick up a fender or a gibson guitar. If otherwise, (pop or indie) get an acoustic. If you went for the electric, then get the LINE 6 amplifier called "the Spider III" because it comes with built-in effects for your type of songs. DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT THIS IS A BAD AMP. IT IS AN AMAZING AMP AND HAS ALL OF YOUR EFFECTS BUILT IN TO IT.

http://guitar.about.com/od/tabchordslyrics/ss/read_guitar_tab.htm - This website teaches you how to read tabs.
Then go onto http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ - It's a tab website (tabs teach you how to play guitar songs).

The beginner's song is Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple (solos and all). If you can master that, Iron Man by Black Sabbath. It sounds like you've got an amazing taste in music (not just saying that) so you will know, by the 2 songs you can play, how hard most songs sound. AC/DC are great for guitar because they're easy to learn and really famous, but listen to lots of Green Day and Muse, because their songs are amazing, but ALOT easier than they sound. Then you can judge for yourself, at how good you are and the rate your improving, what songs to learn next. Before you know it you'll be shredding licks like Satriani or Van Halen.
