Start with a nylon string acoustic guitar. Buy a high quality, but inexpensive guitar. I recommend Seagull brands starting at $225, but you can get cheaper imports.

Metal strings are hard on the fingers for beginners. Electric guitar is played differently than acoustic. I don't recommend starting with electric.

Get a basic chord book. Find a teacher. You can start learning from anyone who is more experienced than yourself. Play together.

Learn to read tabature. This is where guitar music is written by showing the actual finger positions on the fretboard.

Get a songbook of your favorite tunes.

Never put down the guitar.

Making a guitar is very difficult, and you have to make sure that the sound resonates in the guitar well. It is for this reason that there are no kits for accoustic guitars.

There are some kits for electric guitars though.

What is the cheapest price that I can get an American made acoustic guitar for?

I'm looking for an American made acoustic guitar to replace the basic starter-kit model that I have right now, so anything would be an improvement. New or used doesn't matter to me, so long as it's playable. The same can be said for brand, as I have no preference. Any information (model, manufacture year, etc.) would be helpful. I've been looking all over the internet, but information is really scattered. Thank you in advance!

I don't have the answer you want but, when buying an acoustic the amount of money = quality with sound and the way its built. When buying an acoustic you definitely get what you pay for. I've had cheap acoustics to play around with the warp in a year even with controlled humidity. The good ones, haven't warped and still sound the same as when i bought it. My advice to you would be, save up till memorial day, and go to guitar center (really big sale day), and pick yourself out a guitar that you find suits you best.

Can I first learn electric guitar and then transfer skills to an acoustic guitar?

My situation is that I live with other people, so my practice on the acoustic guitar can get a bit annoying after a short period, because I'm not any good yet.

I was already planning on buying an electric guitar starter kit which includes a small amp and headphones, which would be perfect because I can play and not bother anyone.

My question is, would I be able to transfer any guitar playing skills from my electric guitar to acoustic guitar, or are they too different?

I appreciate your advice. Thank you!
I'm sure it requires more finger precision on the acoustic as not too get any muted sounds on the strings, etc, I just want to know how different it is. Thanks!

YES! I started on electric guitar and when I use an acoustic it's no problem. The only differences you'll notice is that on acoustic you have to press harder with your fingers, and acoustics generally have a higher action and bigger gaps in between strings. Switching might take a bit of getting used to, but all in all if you can shred on the electric, the acoustic will be easy.

Should I buy the guitar kit with DvD's included and strap and such. oR BUY A BETTER GUITAR AND ALL THE OTHER items seperately? This will be a birthday present for my 14 yr old son who has started last year on an electric but lost interest, says he would rather try an acoustic. I would say 500. would be the higher end of what I would spend. Your experienced input much appreciated.

When buying a guitar, like anything else, you get what you pay for. But lets be honest, most people who start off playing guitar give up within a few months, and the guitar player just ends up a few hundred dollars poorer. When buying a guitar, buy something cheap, but easy to play.

The best acoustic guitar for a beginner is an inexpensive Yamaha FG700s. This is a cheap guitar that is very easy to play, and it looks and sounds great. This is hands down the best choice for a newbie guitarist. Another option would be an Takamine G-340 guitar. You can find both for around $200. But do not buy that Esteban guitar it is very badly made even by cheap guitar standards.

So hold off on buying a $500 guitar until you are sure that playing the guitar is something he is going to stick with. You already lost money on the electric guitar don't make the same mistake twice.

With regards to buying a kit or the accessories individually. I wouldn't buy the kit the accessories included are throw aways and you are better off buy a little better guitar for almost the same price. You can buy the accessories later when needed, which you will end up doing later anyway becuase the ones that come in the kit are garbage. And then have your son use You Tube and Google to search for free lessons before spending money on DVD lessons. There are a ton of free lesson out there. That is what I did when I first started learning and then when I needed more instruction and wanted to move ahead in my playing did I start buying DVD's and paying for Online Lessons.

Just my 2 cents.....
