Start with a nylon string acoustic guitar. Buy a high quality, but inexpensive guitar. I recommend Seagull brands starting at $225, but you can get cheaper imports.

Metal strings are hard on the fingers for beginners. Electric guitar is played differently than acoustic. I don't recommend starting with electric.

Get a basic chord book. Find a teacher. You can start learning from anyone who is more experienced than yourself. Play together.

Learn to read tabature. This is where guitar music is written by showing the actual finger positions on the fretboard.

Get a songbook of your favorite tunes.

Never put down the guitar.

Making a guitar is very difficult, and you have to make sure that the sound resonates in the guitar well. It is for this reason that there are no kits for accoustic guitars.

There are some kits for electric guitars though.

An acoustic guitar is one that doesn't require electronic amplification. In other words, it's not an electric guitar. Many people incorrectly think it means a steel-string guitar. Actually, acoustic guitars come in several types, including some with nylon strings ("classical guitars").

A Spanish guitar is one that is made in Spain. It's sometimes sloppily used, especially by older people, to mean various other kinds of guitars (sometimes classical guitars, sometimes flat-tops as opposed to archtops, sometimes any acoustic! Talking to people of 80 or 90 or reading old books, you'll encounter all of 'em). It's really impossible to tell what anybody means by it unless you have some other clue. It's not a term used by people who know guitars, unless they're talking about one made in Spain.
