What are some good acoustic-electric guitars for 200-500 dollars?

I need a good, not cheap acoustic-electric guitar in the 200-500 dollar range. I don't want to buy a really expensive guitar but I also don't want to buy a cheap 50 dollar guitar. I need a guitar that at least sounds good. Any suggestions?

I am planning on starting guitar lessons. Obviously an acoustic is the right way to go in the beginning, so I'm wondering if anyone can give me suggestions as to what guitar I should pick up. I heard the Seagull S6 is a good choice for a reasonable price.

Can someone suggest an acoustic guitar that is under 500 dollars with a good rich sound?

Ideally, the guitar could be found in the bay area (california, like san francisco) :)

the best bet is any ibanez product. I personally prefer Fender products,but they can prove to be expensive(300-400).Ibanez puts out good starter instruments with good features and are affordable to start .A entry level acoustic or electric could run 200-300 dollars.
Then when you get your skill up, ditch it and buy a Fender. They tend to have a resale value.

I was thinking of buying an acoustic at Guitar Center. They have price tags and also prices online

How would you start off bargaining?

Like pick up a 500 dollar guitar and say, "I'll pay 400 for it!" at the place where you pay?

Or how would you go about bargaining?

It is very difficult to bargain on new guitars since they're already deeply discounted. On the other hand, it never hurts to ask if there's any wiggle room on the price. But a $500 guitar probably lists for $800 so the store doesn't have a lot of room before it's down to its own cost for that guitar.

Used guitars are a different story. There, the store either bought the guitar for about half of what it's asking for it or it's on consignment. If it's on consignment you should feel free to make a counter offer that's lower, at which point the store will contact the owner to see if he'll accept your offer. If the store owns the guitar - most likely taken as a trade-in - then you should again feel free to offer substantially less.

My boyfriend plays the guitar. He's very passionate about it and happens to be very good. He recently had his car broken into and someone stole his guitar. Im looking to buy a nice guitar for under $500 dollars for his birthday. Acoustic/electric, good for tap guitar and slide. Id love some guitar people to help me out if you can.

Right off, you're an awesome "significant other", lol.

Anyway, tough question but do you remember what kind of guitar it was? Also, what kind of music does he play?
See you can buy an acoustic that can be played by itself or can be plugged into an amp.
But you can also buy an electric guitar which can sound like an acoustic but only if its plugged into an amp (you won't hear much without the amp!)
A person can do tapping & slide guitar on both acoustic & electric. Thus why a little more info might help.

Fender Guitars (or in your case b/c of your budget, Squire - the 'budget priced' version of Fender), can sound great on a clean setting. Another option is Ibanez (or its 'budget priced' version: Ltd ). Don't overlook looking in the 'used' instruments shops. It never ceases to amaze when Ibanez guitars, going for nearly $1K new at a shop, will turn up at my local used shop for about $400! And they're not bad guitars either.
