i really want to get an acoustic guitar and teach myself how to play but i dont really have a lot of money though....does anyone know where i can get a good acoustic guitar for a beginner like me? lol
and when i say i dont have a lot of money i mean like $100. is there any around that price range?

The best value for a beginner acoustic guitar is the Washburn D-10. Under $300, and most professional musicians would play one onstage if they had to.
It's not a Martin, but it's the guitar I recommend for beginners.

Edit: Not in that price range; save the extra money and get a better quality instrument. It's worth the extra wait and expense.

@Mikey, just Mikey - I actually want to start off acoustic. I (as of right now) am not as intrested in electric as i am in acoustic. Plus, I'm trying to save money, so buying an amp wouldn't be the best choice:P

All acoustic guitars are no almost the same! This is from a guitarist. Here's a Ibanez Acoustic. Ibanez has great quality instruments. This is a value pack with the guitar, strap, tuner, and gig bag (case/bag). For $100 this is as good and cheap as it gets new.

I am familiar with music, i've played the piano for 5 years and the clarinet for 4. However, I want to learn the acoustic guitar and I haveno experience in that.

I am looking for a cheapo brand to learn and practice on. Since it 's my first guitar I don't want to spend a lot of money, but at the same time I don't want it to sound like a toy. What brands offer the most value and durability for beginners?

Also, would it be better to take private lessons, or group lessons?
I learned to piano via private lessons, and the clarinet through group lessons in my school. I have to say that I favored the group lessons- since my classmates were there I felt more confident. However some music veterans tell me than private lessons are more focused towards progress. What is your opinion on this?

Whatever works for you is best. I teach group lessons in middle school and have up to thirty five guitars in a room. I can tell you that the group lessons are definitely geared toward making sure everyone is comfortable with the material before moving on, but I do keep a bunch of enrichment material available for students who want to move ahead.

As far as inexpensive guitars, there are starter packs that come out between the start of school and Christmas, that are usually a pretty good deal. Yamaha, Epiphone, Kona, Ibanez, Fender, and Washburn all put one out. You need to decide whether you want a steel string ($100 - 300) Nylon string ($100 - 200) acoustic electric ($150 - 300, sometimes a little more if it comes with an amp and a tuner) or electric ($150 - 300) You can get an idea of the price from Musician's Friend, Sam Ash, Elderly Instruments, or even Yahoo shopping, then take what you've learned, go down to your local store and actually put your hands on a few. If their prices are about the same as mail order (or if you can convince them to sell it to you for that price since you have the printout in your hand!) buy it right there. It's really hard to give an answer to this question when you have not eluded as to what music you want to play and what sort of budget you are working with.

Yamaha, Epiphone, Ibanez, and Fender all make good beginners electric guitars. Taylor's student line are a good choice for an acoustic, but if they are too expensive, the same names mentioned for electric guitars, make good student acoustic guitars as well. I would at one time steer beginners away from Fender acoustic guitars, as their quality was pretty iffy in the past, but the newer ones are acceptable. If you go with a Fender acoustic, buy a new one.

Used guitars are a good way to get a better guitar for your money. If you know of an experienced player that would be willing to go with you to test them, you can find many good deals in the want ads and craigslist. Don't do this alone though, as there are some people that will try to fob off junk to a beginner. Local music stores also often have good deals on used gear.

Do not buy your guitar at a big box store. Those deals that seem too good to be true, usually are. Names can be confusing here. "Starcaster by Fender" and "Maestro by Gibson" are really crappy Chinese guitar kits, that have licensed the respective names. They are poor at best and often unplayable out of the box. In most cases, either they cannot be fixed, or the cost of repair is greater than the value of the guitar. Same is true with many no name guitars sold in big box stores and online. If you must buy online, I recommend you use Musician's Friend. You won't get a counterfeit guitar from them. They also have a reasonable return policy, should you get a lemon.

Shop at a local music store. The prices will be competitive with Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc. and they will be more helpful to get you what you need, whereas the corporate backed stores are only interested in how much money they can get out of your pocket on the given visit. Local music stores depend on repeat business and customer loyalty, so you'll get better service all around. When you end up with questions and/or problems, you'll be glad they know you. when it's time to buy more gear, you'll be glad they know you, as they tend to give regular customers better deals.

Hi, i have inherited an acoustic guitar from my dad but it's a bit shit because the strings are pretty far above the frets and the frets are kinda rusty :p should i see if i can find someone to fix it (if so how much would it cost?) or should i just upgrade to a better guitar?

I have a Harmony acoustic and have been doing guitar since Christmas if that helps :p

There are a number of things that can cause high action (string height above the frets), and the cost of repair would depend on which it is. Most guitar repairmen will not charge you just to look at it and give you an idea of what's needed and the cost.

How much money you should put into it would depend on its value, which would depend on make, model, age, and condition.

Corroded or dirty frets can be cleaned with 0000 gauge steel wool. Mask off the fretboard with masking tape if it has any stain or finish that might be damaged, or if you are using the steel wool against the grain of the wood. Magnetic pickups should also be protected if present. If the fretboard is unfinished wood you can go over it with the steel wool, working with the grain. A couple drops of lemon oil can be rubbed in to help protect it from cracking and make it look nice when you're done. There are also commercial fretboard cleaners/oils.

P.S. I'm assuming that this isn't the same guitar as the Harmony you mentioned (that's the one you've had since Christmas, and you just got another, right?), but it's not quite clear. If it is an old Harmony, it may have a nonadjustable neck which would make it quite expensive to fix any neck bow.
