Cheap, Quality Guitars?

Q. I have no access to a guitar, so I'm looking for a very cheap one that I can use to get a feel of how to play it. I'm not sure how good I am since I've never played, so I don't want to spend a lot of money. I just want a full sized acoustic guitar that won't break when I play it, because I'll have no idea how to fix it. I need to buy online because guitar shops around here are very expensive. Amazon would be nice. The highest I'm willing to spend is $50. I've seen them on Amazon for $15, but I'm worried about the quality. I'm not looking for something top of the line, just something that's not crap please. An expert opinion would be highly appreciated. Also, if you can find a guitar with add-ons like a guitar case, pick or cool design, that would be great ^^. Other than that, just a good acoustic under $50.

Answer
"Cheap" and "quality" just don't go together, as posted above. It would be dumb to spend a lot when you aren't sure you want to keep playing, but don't expect quality sound or decent action for $50. Just buy something in your price range and see what you can do.

Where can I buy a high quality acoustic guitar for cheap?

Pamela

My husband wants an acoustic guitar for Christmas, looking to spend around 200 dollars. I am a bargain hunter and would like to be able to get him something really fantastic for the money. Any suggestions other than a pawn shop?

High -quality acoustic guitars below $100.???

nazuki h.

uhmm my grandparents are at the US and they're asking me what i want them to buy. its either a set of books or a guitar. I want a guitar.. that's my final decision. I thought of Taylor guitars but wtf they cost about 2000 dollars. and we do not have that kind of money. I searched for Gibson,Ibanez, epiphone and they all cost exaggeratingly expensive... I need a high quality guitar below a hundred dollars... and i'm 15 btw..I need one ideal for country loving, pop rocking songstress like me..

Answer
Sorry, there is no such thing as a high quality or even decent quality guitar under $100. Anything that you might get in that price range will be cheap and shoddy in terms of material and workmanship, possibly just-barely OK for a beginner to start learning on, but once you develop any ability on the guitar at all, you will find its sound and playability completely unsatisfactory and want to upgrade to a better quality instrument as soon as possible. I wouldn't recommend any guitars under $100.

Ibanez and Epiphone are decent beginner level instruments for around $250. Sorry but that is about the minimum you will have to spend for a playable guitar that sounds decent.

To a great extent, you get what you pay for when you spend more for a guitar -- better quality tonewoods and hardware, better craftsmanship and construction, etc -- all of which produce superior sound and playability.

Acoustic guitar?

I really want an acoustic guitar, but I'm not sure what are good (quality) brands, and the different types. I don't want something super expensive, but it doesn't have to be cheap either. And any guitar related tips would really help! Thanks!

Answer
Okay...

The Brands that you DO NOT want:

Baja
First Act

The lowest priced (good quality) guitars:

Epiphone - (good, the necks are thin in width though)

Yamaha -(you can get a decent Yamaha, but like Epiphone the neck width is thin)

Washburn - (Washburn is a pretty decent one)

Takamine - Has some nice sounding cheaper ones

Now on the higher side of things these guitars have great sounds:

Martin --> Also has some cheaper ones

Taylor --> model 614 is my favorite

Gibson --> B25's are beautiful. Classics. Hummingbirds are popular with musicians such as James Morrison.

Good luck!

What is the highest quality guitar brand? I am not talking about the most popular or the best cheap guitars. I want to know which brand of guitar uses the best materials available and makes very high quality products consistently. I don't care about the price, but what brand produces the highest quality guitars?

Answer
Hello there,

While you may think that is a simple question, it is not simple to answer. The type of guitar makes a difference. Some companies make great acoustic guitars, but do not make electric guitars (or make rather common ones). Some companies specialize in high quality custom built classic or flamengo guitars but do not make any regular acoustic or electric guitars. Also are you talking about general production guitars or custom built guitars. Custom builts are going to be higher quality materials and hand crafted. General production guitars are mass produced so they cannot have comparable hand crafting.

All major brands have a custom shop which produce guitars similar to their standard production models but with the highest quality wood and parts and are hand crafted. Gibson, Fender, and Ibanez all have custom shops that make guitars far superior to their standard production models. Frankly there will be little if any difference in quality between major brands custom shop built guitars. All are the highest quality. Now there are small-ish custom builders who may make higher quality guiitars. But they may only build a handful in a year. So it is hard to compare them to the major brands custom shops.

When it comes to standard production guitars, Fender American, Gibson and high end Ibanez are as good as any.

One additional problem in making broad comparisions is that each company makes its own line of guitars. So the materials used are not exactly the same. That makes a comparision of the quality of the wood impossible. Gibson uses mahogany for bodies and necks. Fender uses alder or swamp ash for bodies and maple for necks. Ibanez uses basswood for bodies and maple for necks. So you cannot say Gibson's mahogany is higher quality than Fender's, because Fender does not use mahogany. You cannot say Fender uses higher quality swamp ash than Gibson because Gibson does not use swamp ash. Same with hardware. Both Gibson and Fender use CTS pots.

So unless you have a specific type of guitar you want compared across the brands, you cannot really compare the brands.

Is the Taylor 814ce guitar for beginners or intermediate players?

Kiptar

This is the only guitar I have and bought for $2700, how can I know if it is high quality or cheap quality?

Answer
Oh, that's definitely not a beginner or intermediate guitar, it's a very high quality guitar and many advanced players (myself included) wouldn't mind having one. You're very fortunate to be able to afford to learn on a guitar like that. I've been playing guitar for 40 years and play in church every Sunday and only wish I had that nice of a guitar.
You can tell the quality of a guitar by the materials it's made of. That guitar is made of quality tone woods and top of the line materials. The Taylor Expression System electronics are excellent and produce a very acoustic like signal through an amplifier or PA. Knowing brands is also key and Taylor is a very respected brand of guitars. You have a very nice and high quality guitar.

I'm an intermediate player and I have a cheap acoustic guitar and a fender strat and I may buy a new acoustic guitar in the future. I don't really need anything fancy, I just want to know which kind suits best for an intermediate player. I want something with sort of a bright tone and that is high quality. My thoughts are ibanez, fender, taylor, and gibson guitars but I want somebody's expert opinion

Answer
Of the ones you listed, only Taylor bears consideration. Fender acoustic guitars are awful; Ibanez are better but not nearly in a class with Taylor. Gibson charges an obscene amount of money for really mediocre acoustic guitars.

Right now the best bargains to be had in intermediate acoustic guitars are Eastman guitars. They're a little hard to find but their web site has a dealer locator.

If you can spend more, get a McPherson, Goodall, Santa Cruz, or Froggy Bottom.

How much longer do good guitar strings last?

sejad_a

Hi!

I usually get the cheapest strings I find at music store for my acoustic guitar. I've been told that they lose their fresh sound quickly, relative to higher quality strings.

My question is if I spend money on good quality strings, how long would you estimate them to keep that really sexy like-new sound?

Thanks!

Answer
Strings last about 2 months. Don't fall for those gimmicky coated strings that claim to last 3x longer or whatever. The steel stretches from the tension over time. No fancy coating can prevent that. Even if you don't play it at all, strings that are kept tuned will start to lose their brilliance after about 3 months.
