Where can I buy a cheap acoustic guitar?

Cher Z

I'm looking for a starter guitar, I tried Target but all they had was the First Act and all the reviews were terrible. Any idea of where to find a decent cheap one? Since it's a starter one, I don't want to spend a lot of money. Thanks!

Answer
Amazon (they sell everything, and are connected with some smaller music stores), and major music retailers like Sam Ash, Sweetwater (these first three are my preference, mostly based on customer service). Amazon is probably the best place to start since all the major specialty retailers sell their products there as well.

Other common retailers include Musicians Friend / Guitar Center / ZZzsounds, American Music Supply.

Local or web, specialty or non-specialty retailer - it doesn't matter anymore. Focus on the specs of the instrument and the brand - and note ones which are common (like Martin, Fender, Epiphone, Takamine, and others). The common ones are slightly more reputable, but these days they are all made in similar factories in South East Asia. No matter where you buy, it will come in a box from south east Asia, that your retailer has simply slapped a price tag or shipping label on.

Locally, your best bet might be Guitar center. You may have a local music shoppe, but the tastes of the owner, a lack of selection, and the prices may lead you to buy online or from a major retailer instead.

And do try to get a full-size instrument. Most of the reduced size instruments or student's / children's guitars have appalling quality, and you would be better off in spending the extra 20-30 dollars to get a real, full size instrument.

where do they sale cheap acoustic guitars?

unknown

im getting a guitar so im looking to see in what store they will sell a cheap acoustic one.?

Answer
Guitar Center or Sam Ash will have a good selection of inexpensive but decent-sounding and decent-playing guitars.

DO NOT buy a guitar from Best Buy, or Walmart, or K-Mart. Whatever you get from any of those big-box retailers will be guitar-shaped objects not much better than toys, that will not play well, stay in tune, or sound good. Don't waste your money!

Is it okay to buy a acoustic guitar from guitar center?

Malikah Si

I live in Kansas city and the closest one to me is in overland park and independence. I want a Taylor but a guitar brand new. Why is there guitars there so cheap? I don't have a local music store. Mine only do repairs but no selling instruments. Do you think guitar center carries high end guitars?

Answer
guitar center and the internet, have ruined the music biz.
Neither cares at all about quality, or service. Just the money.
I always try to support the local music store, that has a real guitar tech.

I want a store that gives me the same answer, every time I ask it.
GC will give you a different answer, every time. All they care about, is whatever "the boss" told them, that morning.

Wherever you buy it, PLAY the guitar first. The actual guitar.
Taylor also sells very good high end guitars.

If you are in Kansas City, there are a LOT of good local stores, that carry Taylors, in all price ranges.

I have a K-14, from the '90's. It's a Koa wood, grand concert size, just a little smaller than a "dreadnought" size. It was about $1,500 then, I don't know how much they are now, but Taylor does make some of the best guitars, in their price ranges.

Acoustic Guitar Questions?

Jed Jed

I am interested in buying a guitar for myself I have a bit questions, and concerns though.

First: As I check online, I see some good guitars but when I see the reviews it says I got this for my 7 year old, and I am looking for a adult guitar but I don't know if there is a difference, and what size I should get (Adult size)

Also does anyone know a known place where I can get the kind of acoustic guitar for under 100$$

Thanks, I highly appreciate it!!
IS THIS GUITAR GOOD FOR ME??
Silvertone SD Series Acoustic Guitar Pack With Digital Tuner

Answer
Check out your local Guitar Center. I've never purchased a guitar there, but I know they have a really large selection of acoustic guitars of all sizes for all price ranges. A guitar under $100 is probably not going to be very good quality though - Cheap guitars aren't good, and good guitars aren't cheap.
Ask someone who works there for an evaluation, they'll help to find the best guitar for you, within your price range/size needs/etc.

Answer
Email Musicians Friend and ask them to work with you because they might. Besides Musicians Friends is no tax for most states while Guitar Center taxes everyone so you already would be getting it cheaper just by buying it at Musicians Friend. Both have free shipping I believe. I was looking at a Synyster Gates Custom Red - at G/C it went for $1049 plus tax, I got it at Musicians freind for $891 no tax. I was looking at a Epiphone Dave Navarro Acoustic Standard. On Guitar Center it goes for $1042 plus tax. I got Musicians Friend to go to $555. They work with you and have great customer service.

Do acoustic guitars HAVE to be in a humid environment to have good tone and stay functional?

A Black Ma

Because at my guitar center and other local guitar shops their acoustic guitar rooms are extremely humid. The guitars sound great but i dont have a place at my house to put in a bunch of humidifiers to keep my acoustic guitars

Answer
Wood will absorb moisture or dry out depending on the humidity. As wood absorbs moisture, it swells. When it dries, it shrinks. There is more movement across the grain than directionally along the grain. A guitar is constructed in such a way that it can't tolerate too much movement of the wood. (Plywood tends to be a little more stable than solid wood because the grain of the plies is alternating) You'll notice that Guitar Center keeps mostly it's high end guitars in the humidified room. This is partly because the high end guitars are solid wood, and partly so you can hear them better when trying them out.

Guitars are constructed in the factory at something close to 45% humidity. By comparison, the air in my house gets down to about 15% humidity during heating season. If a solid wood top starts to dry out, it shrinks across the grain at a faster rate than the rest of the body. This is partly because it's soft-wood (spruce) and partly because the direction of the grain makes the sides more stable. If the top shrinks too much, something has to give and it will develop cracks.

As far as tone goes, dry wood actually resonates better than wet wood. So it's a balance between tone and stability. You don't have to humidify your house to protect your solid wood guitar. You simply control the humidity in the case. The wood reacts slowly to changes in humidity so you don't have to worry about taking it out and playing in a dry room.....things will be fine when you return it to the mini-climate in it's case. Oh, and it should go without saying (but I'll say it anyway) your guitar should always be stored in it's case.....not on display on a stand.

You don't have to spend a lot for guitar humidifiers...they're quite reasonably priced. If you really want to cheap-out, you can put a moist sponge in a baggie. Poke a few holes in the baggie and put it in the top section of your case.

I am looking for a new acoustic guitar, advise?

Dene D

I have been playing on my beginners guitar for about 3 years and I am getting much, much better. I have been scanning Guitar Center and other websites for a cheap, good quality acoustic guitar. I would like advise, tips, hints, recommendations, ect.
Thank you!

Answer
Washburn D46SCE (my main instrument) is an excellent guitar, and you can sometimes find one for a great deal on eBay, if you're watching for it.

The D46CESP looks even cooler, IMHO (2nd link). (One of these is on eBay right now starting at $400 w/ a hard case! - 3rd link). That's an awesome deal.

(I've purchased 2 used guitars to date (2 Greg Bennett Samick models - 1 from eBay, and 1 from Music-Go-Round) without holding or playing them first, and because I had done a certain amount of research beforehand, and they were higher-end models to start with, the guitars were everything I expected and more. I payed hundreds less for each model than what they originally sold for new.)

A cutaway feature is great, and indispensable, on an acoustic to give you access to the upper frets.

You don't want to look for a new guitar that's too cheap in price, because that's generally what you'll end up getting in quality.

The Washburn models mentioned are professional-grade instruments that will not hinder you technically like a cheaper-quality guitar will.
The high-end Grover tuning keys on these models keep intonation locked in!
The action is set low, and the sound is rich and full. Find your perfect gauge Elixirs and you'll be set for your foreseeable future - never needing another guitar to keep up with your talent level.

I have a small crack on my acoustic guitar saddle, will this affect the tone of the guitar?

It is a cheap 100 dollar guitar from Guitar Center new. The crack is really small and is next to the G string's position on the saddle. All the rest of the strings sound tuned but when it comes to tuning the G string it sounds off by a little not enough to notice but only when it comes to tuning. Is there any suggestions on this situation?

Answer
if the entire back side (where the strings end) pops up, you can duct tape it down and it will sound the same. a crack won't change the sound at all.
