im looking for a company that makes good electric guitars but that arent very expensive say in the 200-300 dollar range. i was looking at the Epiphone and Squire but was wondering if they were well made. i know Epiphone is the foreign Gibson and Squire is the foreign Fender.

Answer
In that range, quality will be very similar.

Epiphones under 1000 bucks (and especially the low end like you are talking) come apart. Chrome and plastic hardware. Not good. But they put decent (for the cheapest of the cheap) electronics in. Myself, I would never touch a cheap Epiphone.

For cheap electric guitars (maybe acoustic too... I've never owned one of theirs) Ibanez really excels in the low-end. I have a 300 dollar Ibanez Les Paul copy (their model: ART 100) that is pretty impressive for a 300 dollar guitar. Their RG series is famous for being low-priced, good quality (for the price) rock guitar.

According to most people, you don't really get a 'good quality guitar' for under 1000 dollars, which is true to a point. But I'm not playing at the Palladium tonight, and I'm guessing you aren't either. I wouldn't go less than a 200 dollar guitar (and it better be on sale) for a beginner.

And while the quality may not be GREAT, mass production has come a long way. A 300-500 dollar Chinese-built guitar sounds just fine in your garage.

How do I get a really good deal a guitar center?

I had a friend who got a yamaha acoustic listed at 700 for 300

Answer
They do deal much... unlike someone elses comment. They will pretty much price match any competitor. The best way to go about it is to look on musiciansfriend.com for what you want. Checkout the price and then go into Guitar Center and simply ask them to help you out on the price. If they seem like a douche, simply tell them it is cheaper online. They'll check the same websites and give you the price... if it's not the same already.

As for the list price... NOTHING is sold at list price in the music world... at least, not from what I've seen. Everything gets a list price, then they mark it down a certain percentage to make you think you're already getting some crazy deal... but the truth is, is that this price is the starting point for them. They'll usually go lower on guitars and amps.

If it's a cheap guitar, then there probably isn't much wiggle room, other than a free set of strings or cheap gig bag.

If it's a high end guitar, they may not do much other than a free hardshell case, and not a hundred bucks off or so. For example, an expensive PRS. They know these are going to eventually sell to someone willing to pay that price, so they are hard to haggle on.

Mid range guitars, or manufacturers like Ibanez, Fender and Gibson, Schecter and ESP who are mass producing gutiars may have a ton of wiggle room for you to haggle with them.

The best time to go is around Christmas, Thanksgiving, but I think next week is Presidents Day, right? SO they might be having a HUGE sale this weekend.

Buy multiple things at once. Get a guitar, Amp, cables and an effect pedal and you'll save a ton. OR, just pretend like you're going to buy everything at once. They'll tell you how much everything will cost in that package... like, "This guitar in this package will be $xxxx price." You then say, well I'll come back for the rest IF I can get the guitar at that price. He'll say NO! I can't do that, but he may knock a bit more off the price he originally gave you.
