I have an acoustic guitar but now I want an electric one. What's the best brand that's both reliable and fairly priced?

And what are the other essentials I need to use it?
My budegt is about $2500 for the guitar alone.

Answer
Ibanez makes good electric guitars at a fair price. As a newbie to electric guitar you might want one with a fixed bridge (not a tremolo bridge) like the Artcore series. An Epiphone Les Paul Studio is a great option too. Schecter also makes nice guitars that are reasonably priced. Can't go wrong with a Fender Standard Strat either if you want to spend $500ish (there are a lot of good used ones out there for around $300 though). The right guitar for you depends a lot on what style you want to play though and you neglected that critical piece of information. You should definitely get out to a lot of music stores and play as many as you can before you decide on one though. Decide if you want to deal with the tuning issues of a tremolo bridge (the ones on the cheap guitar notoriously cause tuning issues). Decide if you like a heavier guitar like a Les Paul, or something lighter like a strat style. Decide if you want a solid body or a semi-hollowbody or even a hollow body (depending on your musical taste). Humbuckers/single coils or both? Shorter scale length (24-3/4) like on Les Paul's and PRS guitars or longer (25-1/2) like on strats and teles.

Besides the guitar, you'll obviously need a good amplifier. Solid state is OK for now and you'll get more features for the money that way. You should look for something with 20 or more watts and at least a 10" speaker, but preferably 12". Line6 and Fender Mustang amps are good and have a lot of features for the price.

You'll also need a guitar strap and a good shielded instrument cable. You'll probably want a nice chromatic tuner too if you don't already have one. If the guitar doesn't come with a hardshell case you might want to pick up a case that fits the guitar well too.

What guitar would I use for Jazz Guitar?

Michael

I have an acoustic guitar right now and am planning on buying an electric guitar this summer. I am planning on playing on jazz band at my college next semester and I'm wondering what guitar would I use and which could I use? Could I use both?

Answer
Any Guitar will work, the Rock standards of the Gibson Les Paul, and the Fender Stratocaster were originally designed to be Jazz Guitars. I can and do play jazz on my Telecaster, Strat, and my Acoustic/Electric.
Semi-hollow and hollow-bodied guitars are a cliche in jazz, but they do give a great tone for that genre.
Shop around, and play as many different guitars as you can find in your price range, play them though an amp that's the same as, or as close as possible to the one you will be using, get the one that plays, feels, and sounds the best.
Do you only play Jazz?, If not you should look for a guitar that has the versatility you will want. Strats, Teles, and Les Pauls, are great guitars that are quite versatile for many genres. If you want to get a semi hollow, Thin-line Teles, many models from the Ibanez Art Core line, and of course Gibson's ES line, and it's cheaper cousin Epiphone Dot or Casino are good choices.
