I played the piano since I was 5 and the guitar since I was 11. My friends and I are planning to form a rock band. I have my own piano at home, and I could just borrow an electric keyboard. I also have my dad's acoustic guitar, but I want to move on to the electric. I only have one problem: which to get. Should I get an Epiphone Les Paul or a Squier Stratocaster? I want a guitar that sounds good but is under $600. Please help!

Answer
I would get a mexican strat (not a squier!). First off you dont want anything made in china, esp. if its 500 dollars worth of it. The mexican strat has a very unique and similar sound to an american strat. The epiphone les paul, which i owned, is very very annoying; the paint chips easy, fret buzz accumulates very fast and worst of all, the jack gets messed up if u twist it a bit. Also,Unless u want a the strap holders fall off so easy on the les paul. GET THE FENDER MEXICAN MADE STRAT. Unless you want a warm jazzy sound, in which case i would get a epiphone casino, the only decent epiphone.

How much would a decent acoustic guitar cost?

I'm just looking for something to help entertain me as I have far too much free time with my current job. I was thinking of taking up guitar and/or bass guitar. How much would an acoustic guitar cost?

A decent one. I wanna start with an acoustic guitar no matter which instrument I end up sticking with.

Answer
The lowest price "decent" guitar I know of is a Yamaha FG700S at just under $200. By decent guitar I mean it has a solid Sitka spruce top, sounds nice, is well constructed, and plays fairly easily (strings are close to the fretboard but not so low they buzz, neck feels nice, stays in tune well, etc). You can go up from there. I really like Yamaha guitars in the lower price bracket and haven't really played anything comparable at that price point. When you get up into the $500 range there are a lot of really good options including Yamaha, Takamine, Seagull, and some of the lower end Martin and Taylors even. A Taylor 110, for example, is an excellent starter guitar for around $600.

But I'd advise you to give a serious look at a Yamaha FG700S. Don't spend a ton of money until you know you'll stick with it. After a couple years, if you're playing a lot you might want to upgrade to a Taylor or Martin.
