What exactly do you need to learn for guitar?

Hiiiii, i'm planning on getting an acoustic guitar for Christmas, and i don't really want to pay for lessons, 15 bucks for half an hour? No thankss...
I wanted to teach myself, i already know about the notes and where they go and how long to hold them for etc.
What do i need to learn to know how to play?
And, any good websites or books/dvd's on how to learn?

Sorry you won't take lessons.
Next best thing is to find a book on how to play. Make sure it is for acoustic. I am assuming you do not mean classical.
Follow the book line by line. don't jump around in the book, and don't move on until each line is perfected.
Make sure you get together with other guitar players frequently. You will be a big help to each other.
If you think $15 is too much, remember that when you are good enough to give lessons.

The best way is to do guitar lessons as sometimes people don't have the motivation to do it at home. You could drop by to your local music store and pick up a beginner guitar method book, they usually come with a CD/DVD. Also the internet is at your finger tips so jump on Youtube and find some tutorials.
