Are there any free web sites that will teach me how to play guitar?

Answer
Hello there,

Don't know how much you have learned so far, so I will start at the beginning. Here is a link to a video lesson at Youtube. This guy has a series of 12 lessons available there at Youtube. You can find the other lessons in the related videos section. He covers the basics very well. You can learn a lot from him. He uses an electric in the videos, but most of the material translates well to the acoustic.

Next is an article about how to read tabs. The more common way of writing guitar music these days is in what is called tabs.

Here is a link to a chord chart. It is several pages long. You can look up how to finger various chords with this. Download this PDF file to your computer. It comes in handy when you need to look up a chord.

When you are ready to start learning some songs, you can search for the tabs. Just Google the name of the song and the word tabs. A common site you will see with guitar tabs is 911 Tabs. There are many, many others. Also, at Youtube search the song name and the words lesson or how to play. There are a great many good video lessons on songs there

Many beginners seek out easy songs. That is okay I guess. I think a better way is to try to learn your favorite songs. Because they are favorites that gives you the motivation to learn them, even if they are hard. You need to tackle some challenges to improve.

However, here is a link with some easy songs. Maybe there are some you will like to learn.

I suggest you try working in some songs into your practice routine fairly quickly. One, that makes practice more fun. It is more fun to play songs than finger exercises. Second, trying to play songs gives you a better feel of how all the stuff you are learning fits into playing. Don't go nuts trying to find the easiest song to start with. Pick any song you like. Add a few bars of that song to your practice session. Just play that riff from the song over and over. Then for the next practice session add a few more bars of the song. Play the previous riff and the new riff over and over. Repeat the process with each practice session. Soon you will have your first song down. You really do need to learn the basics of how to play (like that guy covers in his video lessons), but trying to play songs help put those lessons into perspective. You won't have to ask yourself why you have to learn all this boring stuff, because you will have already seen the answer (you need it to play songs well).

At some point in time, you are probably going to want a good instructor for private lessons. Check at local guitar shops. They can recommend a local teacher. They may offer lessons in store.

You will find lots of useful guitar lessons and information here - it works on an "honour system". If you can afford to pay for the lessons then please donate for what you use - imagine it was a pay site. If you can't afford to donate it is no problem at all - the site is free for you :). Updates and new material is pretty much donation dependant. Donations give me more time away from paid work to develop this site andThese songs are kinda simplified versions of the propers songs to give you some cool stuff to play while you are starting out. They will sound good strummed and help you get a grip of your chord shapes and something to play at your next BBQ :) All these have a pdf chord lyric sheet.
